Frederick LATEST WONDER OF THE PARIS EXPOSITION The world has already enjoyed its ice palaces and monumental constructions in iron, the Paris Eiffel and other ingenious and extraordinary inventions, the won- derful wheel designed for the Chicago World’s Fair, the immense swing at Nashville, and a Venice in pasteboard and canvas at Vienna. But a Chatean of Water, a superb streaming palace, with its partitions formed of incessant torrents of water—true aquatic walls—an immense construction surrounded on all sides by flowing water; in a word, a gi- gantic fairy fountain, in the interior of which will be brought together all the fantasia of modern distractions. Heme, it went to Sen Francisco | may be believed, is a conception that should awaken the curiosity of the dull- est Parisian and gratify the interest of every visitor to the approaching exposi- tion. The project, described as the “Chateau d'Eau,” is the invention of Jean Zawie- ski, architect of the theater of Cracovie. The principal idea of this architectu- ral conception was the necessity of ar- ranging the sheets of water in such a manner that they would create unbroken surfaces in ‘the form of bells, while com- pleting at the same time the general sil- houette of the palace. 7 The conical form of construction and the three horizontal divisions were al- most of imperative necessity, despite the enormous height of the edifice, which will be at least 3% feet. The parterre will constitute only the socle or plinth of the building, which will support an architecture of the Tuscan order, crowned by an attic of rich and grace- ful form of the Renaissance, above which will raise an architecture of the Ionic order. Such is the nucleus of a structure which shoots to a height like a lighthouse top, and is surmounted at its summit by an allegorical group of figures. An expenditure of several millions will be demanded for the ‘‘Chateau d'Eau,” ‘which will be 325 feet high and 262 in di- ameter at its base. The effect it is in- tended to produce at night, when the calciums and flashlights are in full play at its summit, is not to be imagined or described. Cox of this city, is announced.
