Means Millions to California’s Manufacturers a nd Pro- ducers. Hitherto Dead-Lstter Law Regard- Ing Pub! ¢ Institution Supplles to Be Enforcead. LUS ANGELES, Can, Sent. 16 — Through the efforts of the Merchants’ and Manufacturers’ Association of Los Angeles a signal and very important vie- tory has been won for home products. In tie end the campaign that has been so fortuitously iraugurated by tiis organiza- tion may mean hundreds of thousands of aollars annually to the manufacturersand praducers of California, perhaps m Ilions. At the last se:sion of the Legislature a section which required all public instituticns of the State when adver.ising for bids for supplies to give preference to home prod- in their advertisements that they would give such preference, Up to within a few days this law has been an abs e drad letter. A few days ago the Board of Supervisors of Riverside County caused an advertisement to be bids for supplies for one of the public institutions of that county. It called tor an Eastern brand of baking powder and for Eastern soap, coffee and crackers. This came to the attention of Secretary F. K. Zeehandalaar of the local Mer- chant d Manuiacturers’ Association, who at onc> entered into correspondence with the Board of Supervisors and the District Attorney of R.verside County. He informed them referred manufacture or propuction. On the thowin - made by Secretary Zee- nandalaar the Riverside District Attoracy instructed tne Board of Supervisors that they had violated both the letterand the | spirit of the law, and suggested that all | bids that had been received be rejected. Such action was taken by the board yes- and to-day the zood news was conveyed to the Merchants’ and Manufac- | turers’ Association of this city. It was only a month ago that thc asso- ciation organized a home-product depart- ment, with a special committee 10 mskz a vigorous campaign, much upon the lines of tne Manufacturers’ znd Producers’ A-- San Francisco. That committee has been steadily at work ever since. with the object of cre- | ating public sentiment as a groundwork for accomplishing itsaims. The instance cited was the fir<t opportunity tba: pre- sented itself for testing the new section of the Political Code relat.ve .to0 home prod- icts for home institutions, and through the energy and intelligence of Secretary sehandalaar it was promptly seized and victory won that e<tablishes a most able precedent, and which will prob- ve followed all along the line through- out the State. Commenting on the matte: Secretary L corre- spondent: “The result of a stronzand united effort on the part of the associations of San Francisco and of this city will be that all the public institutions of Caitfornia will beinduced to foreign and Eastern articles w:ll be ex- cluded from them. may mean millions of dollars to California producers, as the | law applies not only to food products, but to furnishings of all kinds, to building materials to evervthing that is or can bes manufactured or produced in California.” —— AT 1 ON FIRE ANGELES. | 1. U. Smith’s Lesiaence Consumed and a Fireman Injured. NGELES, CaL, Sept. of L 0. Smitn, corver ot 16 —The Adams LO8 o'clock to-night. The fire started either in the kitchen or on the outside, and in- cendiarism i+ suspected. The family had retired and the blaze was | not d:scovered until it had gained consid- erable neadway. One fireman fell from the roof of a poreh, a distance of fifteen feet, striking his back across an iron railing and was seriously injured.
