THE SA FRANCISCO CALL, TUESDAY, AUGUST 10, 1897 B I e R e L B e e i e e PASTORS TALK NGLE TAX Ralph Hoyt Raises Questions at the Congregational Monday Club. Members Waive Discussion to Probe Into the Sub- ject. Interest in Single Tax Generally Ex- pressed—Presbyterians Hold a Quiz Day. Ralph Hovt, State organizer of the sin- gle tax movement, made an address by invitation yesterday before the Congrega- tional Monday Club. His paper was lis- tened to with great interest by the pastors, Among other things the speaker said: Itis a hopeful indication that at least a few clergymen among the 120.000 or more per- | 2 the Uniled States whose voeation is | z and teaching of religious prin- | ous of investigating economic | one among & class of persons so | v igent and well educated can be hiin | the fact that there is something rad:ca chedly, cruelly wrong with our 5 1, else how 1s it that th our land are rapidly becoming richer, and the | poor are, with corresponding rapidity, grow=- ing relatively poorer? by are men and women fiercely contend- ing with each other for a chance to earn an | honest pittaace, while starving children are crving for bread? Surely it is not because of any lack of nat- | ural resources from which the means of sub- | sistence can be obtained by labor applied to | such resources. The eartn is nature’s great | storehouse, wherein are the raw materiais for | the production of uucounted thousands of good things for the satisfaction of human de- | sires. With free access to this vast storehouse | noue need starve, none need lack the tangible | things that go to make life aesirable. And in this connection let us listen to the words of that grestest of modern philosophers and philanthropists, Henry George, who says: ‘It is a well-provisioned ship, this on which we sail through space. If the bread and beef above decks seem Lo gTOW Scarce, we but open a hutch and there is & new suppiy of which before we never dreamed. And Vvery great command over the services of others comes to those who, as the hatches are opened, are per- mitted tosay: ‘This is minel’ ” But I must hasten to briefly outline the theory of the single tax—our moral reform with & fiscal name—a tax whicn is really nota 1ax, except as to the method by which it must be levied and collected. nere quote_the following definition from . James 5. Reynolas of this City, who was a iber of the California convention in 1878, | iramed the misfit constitution now in ce, but who has since repenied, reformed, become an ardent singie-taxer. Mr. Rey- says: he single tax is the taking of ground rent ne for public use. This seems simple and enough for even a child to understand. And it is. Children do understand it when t0ld, and so do grown persons whose minds nave not been filled with the prevalentsuper- ions on which revenue laws are 1t superstitions blind the unaer therefore it is necessary to extend the defin tior The single tax means the abolition of all taxes upon persons, on_industry, on its prod- | ucts, and the taking for public’ purposes by | the taxation of land values irrespective of im- provements, all that fund srising from the increase of population and its moral and in- dustriel sclivities which constitute the nat- ural, just end sufficient source of public revenues.” Thousands of States are tryin only way by may be well to men and women in the United g 10 _solve this riddle in the which its solution is possible. It tate in this connection that | the advocates of this movement represent ail | sses of honest, respectabie people. Among | earnest Supporters are numerous mer- chants, manutacturers, farme wage- workers, clerks, lawyers, Judges, railroad bankers, colleg , physi- hanics, journalists and last—though not least in 1mportance, but few in number— ministers. Scores of newspapers—a dozen or more in California—are priniing single tax devartments regularly, and few are so blind to the demands of the public as to exclude well- ritten articles favoring our movement when- ever such matter is offered them. It was quiz day at the Presbyterian Ministerial Association, and mis-ions as weli as other subjects of interest to minis- | ters were discussed. Rev. Dr. Condit read | resolutions of regret for the death of the | late Miss Culbertson, and on a motion | made by the Rev. Dr. Minton it was re- solved to frame the resolutions and hang them in the room at the mission, 920 Sac- ramento street, where the Presbyterian ministers have held their meetings for several years, The Christian ministers held an infor- mal discussion yesterday on the subject of house-10-house visitations in order to interest the general public in church | work. The ioilowing officers were elect-d for the next six montbs: Rev. W. B. Berry, president; Rev. H. V. Morgan vice-president; Rev. F. 3. Ford, secretary; Rev. Dr. Gardenez, treasurer.
