FINGERS MADE BEFORE FORKS This Was the Impression Given at the Fourth of July Banquet. The Whole Blame Shifted on the Shoulders of One Fred Raabe. Chairman Fletcher Presented With a Handsome Testimonial for Faithful Services. It was all Fred Raapbe’s fault, orat least the majority of the Fourth of July committee blamed it on him. The committee, as everybody knows, has given this Ciiy, without taxing the business men, a Fourth of July celebra- tion the like of which has seldom been seen and the superior never, Now, after completing its labors, the commitiee thought it necessary to cele- brate in atittinz manner, and to this end appointed a committee, in which Fred Raave was the cuiet factor, to preparea fitting celebration. The commitiee, after due deliberation, decided that the only way in which such an event as the final adj urnment of the Fourth of July committee could properly be celebrated was the holding of a ban- uet. As none of the members were a'- icted with un all-consuming desire to do the work therenpon attendant, the gist of it was left 10 Raabe, and he accorainely went to work with a vim and vigor which promised such a banquet as never Las been seen and seldom heard of. As the time drew near the committee- rooms, in which the feast was to be he.d, took on an aspect that suggested the headquarters of the fabled Santa Claus, so overburdened were they with good things to eat and drink. The Iast moment came, as last mo- ments will, and found the committee and a jew guests seated at the proverbial “groaning board.” They were not seated two minut: however, when a groan arose, not from the *'board,”’ but from the assemobled party. Even the oysters on the plates raised their heads in protest, for on all that bountifully spread table neither knife, fork, spoon, salt nmor pepper could be found. And all present were of the opinion that it was Fied Raabe’s fault. He 1t was who had prepared the sumptuous feast, He it was who guaranteed tha: every- thing would be O. K., and be it was who at tue last moment | the banqueters to feast in a style which might bave been “good form” at the time Adam und Eve waked in the garden of Eden, but at the present day is tabooed this side of the Barbary Coast. The guests were dicposed to take the matter as & huge joke, however, and with improvised chopsticks, made of fragments of wooden plates, many of them feasted in the most approved Chinatown sty le. Otihers, more particular, used pockct- knives, matcbes and toothpicks. Bu: the banquet wasa great success, nevertheless, like all the doings of the committee. Al Borlini made a typical toastmaster, and to start things going in good style calied on Joseph O'Donnell, who. on be- half of the executivecommittee, presented Chairman George R. Fietcher with a handsomely illuminate. testimonial, the full text of whicu is as tollow Fourth of July Committee, 1897, one hune dred and tweniy-firsi anniversary of American Independence, San Francisco, Cal. Herrin; “The Ladi-s,” Dr, Ragan; ‘lhe Police,” James S Davim; *The Press of San Francisco,”’ Colunel F. Patrio'ic Robinson; "‘How [ Worked as Ex-Officio Members of All Committees,’ Fred Raabe. “How I secured the vresence of nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine. people at the regatta,” Grattan D.” Phil- 1i I:-Th- Fourth of Julv committee; first in war, first in peace and firstin the hands of e o paninels “Our public instintions and_ihe good we bave done them,” Samuel Waller, No:.withstanding the omission of those all-important articles of table ‘urniture, everytody voted not only the banquet but the Fourth of July committee a grand success. The Ircquois Orchestra, under the di- rection of Rob Allen, di-coursed sweet * music throughout the occasion, and Mr, Allen favored bhis audience with a solo, which was hearti v appreciated. Prior to the banquet the committee heid a short business session, in which resolutions thanking Gencral Shalter for the handsome showing of histroops dur- ing the parade and reu-ing to take pay- ment for the military bands, Dr. Rottanzi for donating a cup and Joun T. Sullivan shoes for pr.z2s at the rezatta ‘were unani. mously passed. e —————— A Gatling gun fires 5000 shots a minute,
