A Number of Eminent Orators Asked to Address the People. Increased Schon Accommo!ations De. manded in That S:ction of the Citv. The Richmond district of San Fran. cisco is progressive. The people dwelling there know what they want un? manage through force of well-directed agitation to obtain recognition. They bave three schools, an engine-house, a branch of the Free Public Library, station M of the Postoffice, electric light and gas, fairly good streets, ample streetcar incilxue_s, the best drainage system on the peninsula and the lowest death rate in town. Oue subject is uppermost in Richmond, and that relates to the proposed removal of the City ;Cemetery. As regards the closing of Laurel Hill, Calvary, Masonic and Odd Fellows' cemeteries there is a division of sentiment. 25, The Richmoud District Association is not willing to let the subjct rest, so far as the city cemetery is concerned. BEf« forts are being made by the circu- lation of a petition to arouse the Western Adaition. The leading spirits of this agi- ‘ation are President Hobbs and Secretary Maloney of the Richmond Improvement Club. They hope toawaken so much pub- lic interest in the matter that the Point Lobos Improvement Club, a remarkably strong and active organization of which Mr. Fletcher is president, will join hands with the other ctub. ‘At a meeting of the executive commite tee of tne Richmond District Improve- ment Association, held on Friday, it was decided to bold a mass-meeting to advo- cate the removal of the City Cemetery from the district, on Friday evening, May 21, at Simonds Hall, corner Fourth ave- nue and California street. It was reported that Mavor Phelan, ex- Mayor Sutro, William M. Bunker, Eugene Deuprey, Dr. H.J. Bougbton, M.D. (ex- Surgeon-General of the State of Oregon), Hon. 8. M. Shortridge and other eminent speakers had been invited to address the meeting. The following were chosen to act as vice- presidents of the evening: A. Sbarboro, J. C. Jordan, Charles W. Sutro, Prentice Smith, Dr. F. B. Petrie, M. V. Samuels, J. C. Brickell, 8. M. Darbee, E. M. Van Frank, T. J. Glynn, George T. Marsh and J. T. Mabey.. A general invitation was extended to all in favor of the movement to attend. ‘Walter T. Lyon, th- editor of the Rich- mond Banner, is sure that the district ought to have increased scnool accommo- dations. The existing schools are now crowded. Next mounth the Maria Kip Orphanage will he occupied, ana that occapancy will bring seventy additional children of schoo! age to the district. The notion in Richmond is that there should be constructed on the present Sutro scuool site a brick edifice of ei -ht rooms. While the light at Richmond is good, as far as it goes, more licht would be ac- ceptable, and the Supervisors may be en- lightened on this point. The rooms in the Ryer building on the corner of Clement streef and Fourth ave- nue are beiog put in shape for Branch No. 4 of the ree iibrary. Tne rooms wiil be ready for the books by June 1. i st One-twelfth of the population of Eng. land suffers from gout. A physician says that this malady is often due to excessive use of meat.
