Miss Cameron introduced her essay by saying, “It has been said that no city in the world so much resembles the Jerusalem of long ago as the San Francisco of to-day. Mrs. Ramsey spoke extemporaneously, explaining and illustrating a part_of her statements by an ingenious combination of gilded sticks and colored ribbons. The ribbons represented respectively the mem- bers of the Jewish, the Greek Catholic, the Protestant, the Moslem and the Roman Catholic churches, representing 435,000,000 persons in the world. Atthelast wasalong black ribbon which represented those out- side the fold of the Good Shepherd. T: eir number was estimated at 1,053,000,000. Pinned to this ribbon was a tiny blue rip- bon, twa-fifths of an inch in length. Said the lady: “This represents the 2,000,000 converted souls. Behold the work yet todo!” Tle general superintendence of affairs was under the management of Mrs. F. R. Farrand, wife of the pastor of the How- ard-street Presbyterian Church. R. Comeron, president of the Board of Education of Chicago, arrived here yes- terday, and is at the Palace. He has been for some weeks traveling in Mexico and Southern California. While in the southern part of this State last week he purchased the residence of Editor Josep Medill at Pasadena, and will hereafter spend a part of each year in his California home. President Cameron was here last in 1880, and says he sees 2 wonderful improvement in this City and State since then. He says he is perfectly charmed with Califormia, and says be hopes, since he now hasa home here, to be here a great deal hereafter. President Cameron, being at the head of educational matters in Chicago, has an enormous responsibility on his hands. “We expend as much for the public schools there as is done in any other city of the world,” he said. *‘and that means from $8,000,000 to $10,000,000 every year. We have 4300 teachers and 180,000 pripils, The schools run for ten month - in the year. “Yes, if Iean get time I shall tey and examine a little into the schools of San Francisco. One thine has impressed me in the State, and that isthat the schools are very good. There is a very high standard here. “Iwant to say, too, thatI.found the schools in Mexico vastly better than I ex- pected. The reasons are lareely because they have adopted our system, and because they are teaching English as much as pos- sible. I found out, too, that we were mak- ing a mistake in our schoois in not teach- ing Spanish, in place of German and other languages. I found that the business men of Mexico would be onlv too glad to en- gage our young mea if they only under- stood Spanish. There is a field there for us for friendly relations and for business.” President Cameron wili be here till the flower show opens at Santa Barbara. Then he will go there, and a little later to Chi- cago ’ ——————— Reverence for the Bible. There is a sin prevalent in our house- holds of which we take little note, which, in fact, we encourage either by an indil ference to it, or by an active participation in its folly and wickedness: the use of the Word of God for the purpose of making riddles, conundrums, puzzling questi ns, anagrams, etc., etc., out of it. I we really believe in the divine origin of the Bible can it be right to give it to children that they may construe its words into odd connections, and make sport and langhter and mental legerdemain from its pages?
