A CRAZY ACTRESS. While Insane She Played Ophelia With Heartrending Bathos. “Hamlet” is again with Americans again this year; but will play-goers ever see 80 tragic and pathetic a scene as thgt described by the author of “Shakespeare’s Heroines on the Stage” in the \-rl:xtion qf that book just put before the public? It is in these words he tells the story: X An Ophelia actnally mad, chanting her pathetic song and uttering her sad words with all the realism of genuine mn- sanity NIt was a weird sight, and one that chilled the blood of the spectators as they gozed in silence upon the uncanny scene. “They all recognized the actress and realized the situation. Poor Susan Mount- fort, the former bright actress of Lincoln’s Inn Fiel in her insani had escaped from her custod:an, and, with the recollec- tions of her former career teeming through her distracted brain, had made straight for the playhou! Phere, with all the cun- ning of an insane person, the woman had hidden for a time behind the wings, while per forme: ociates carried on the play of ‘Hamlet.” But justat the moment the Optielia of the evening was to enter for the mad scene, an Mountfort, seizing her the arm to push her back from the en- ance, sprang forward in her place, and with wild eyes and wavermg motion rushed upon the stage uttering the words: They bore him barefaced to the bier Hey 1o nonny, nonoy hey nonny. “TFor a moment the spectators were amazed. As they began to realize the situation & murmur ran through the bouse, and then came the strained silence of wonderment and perplexity. «Magniticent was the acting. In her sane days Susan Mountford had been a good Ophelia and now she threw into the t such intensity of action and such ter- ble mental effort as to _render the char- acter overwhelmingly vivid. The secretary’s financial statement showed acredit of $11,722 37. The superintendent’sreport shows that they have on hand in the orehouse 193 tons of ore, the aver- age assay value of which, per sample taken from the cars when raised to the surtace. was $29 49 per ton. On the 250 level, which is worked through the central tunnel, they estimate they have stored in the dnifts 120 tons of ore. the average assay value of which, per samples taken from the cars in the mine, was $39 58 per ton. This makes a total tonnage on hand in the mine and in the orehouse of 316 tons, averaging $33 35 per ton. Arrange- ments will s0on be made to beneficiate this ore. As it is impregnated with some lead ani some other | base materials, it is proposed o have it crushed and concentrated and to ship concentrators to some suituble reduction works 1or extraction of the go.d and stiver contatned in them. Some three or four years ago, when they were extracting ore irom the 1465 level, there was saved 459 tonsof oreof low grade, and it wis hoisted from the mine and stored on the waste dump separate from the waste rock. Ths ore as- | saved from $8 10 $12 per ton and was sold the past | vear for 50 cents per ton. | Advices re | that on the 15th the night shift struck a large and sudden flow of water in the face of the tunnel which put out the Iights and drove them out of the tunnel. Oninvestigation it was found they | had broken into a reservoir, which Is of.en found in deep channels but not frequently thisone. Where it came from they can see sev | eral varieties of trees and limbs and shows a £ood-appearing washed gravel and smail bowlders. They think they are getting into a very importaat change in the channel. | SAVAGE.—On the 850 level in west crosscut 1, at | & point 20 sect back from the face they have | started anorth drift to prospect the quariz body | pussed through in the wes: crosseut, and advanced same 25 feet in quariz of o low nssay value. The west crosscut started in the north upraise is ad- vanced 40 feet, passing through some streaks of fair grade ore; face Is in ore. The Dorth uyraise was advanced seven feet, making its total height 65 feet. The east crosscut started in the north drift 85 feet north of the norih upraise was ad- vanced 38 feet, when it reached the east clay of ledge aud was discontinuel.
