292 THE SA FRANCISCO CALL, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1895. SCHOOL AND THE SALOO The Room Over the Grogshop on Steiner Street Only Tem- porary. DECLARED TO BE ORDERLY. The Children Will Be Removed by the | First of December to the | Hearst School. The article which appeared in THE CALL | yesterday, describing the incongruity of a | schoolroom and a saloon flourishing in the same old rattletrap of a building, where | the little tots in the midst of their A, B, | C’s must stop until the rilald song of a drunken teamster has ceased, was not by neans overdrawn. The saloon is no | » than others of its class—beer and | re served day after v there to the al rough-clad, loud-voiced class of men that frequent such places. But the schoolroom it of place. The mere ad enough, even though it were in tle ones to hear or see anything that occurs there, just on the other side of the thin board floor. | A large number of families were v yesterday and every mother said: I have made no complaint, but I would rather my little girl could spend the day in a better place.” Mrs. Wood, principal of the Hearst Grammar School, of which the class in the building on the corner of Steiner and Her- “I would 3 r place could be found for S but there seems to be no vacant or suitable room in he vicinity. o in the Hearst School ) scholars and can hardly accommo- date that number. ‘According to the School Board, it is s enough to a is complete, then When the con- ry < proximity i be very g ones, anew to find outside room for the re: ady fi filled. and found this ned, on Steiner inally a ball, | a school, both | ow the upper story If a as my builditg was alr g, already and Herman. There has never ibeen any trouble from the men in this way. “T have heard of only one parent who e made any complaimt, and had that person come to me I would have willingly | Mr. Gardiner, who put in as an excellent technique shown. The one trifling criticism that could be made is that the ung lady showed a slight tendency to staccato her notes too much. “Love's Young Dream” was charmingly <ung, but Miss Little’s voice impostation, which is so admirably studied to lieder, is not quite so well adapted to the more showy, meretricious style of Italian song. This was particularly apparent in Paisi- ello’s el cor piu non mi Sento.” 8. Mar- chesi's “La Folletti” was prettily and daintily sung by the young vocalist. — . o — SUBURBAN PROGRESS. Redwood City, Menlo Park and Palo Alto Residences to Be Lighted With Electricity. The convenience of electric lights will soon be supplied to the beautiful resi- dences that adorn Redwood City, Menlo Park and Palo Alto. The business dis- trict of Redwood isalready well lighted with electricity, but the new plant will supply the dwelling-houses with illumination. A few ago Charles Josselyn ob- tained estimates on a gas-lighting propo- sition from Joseph Crockett of the San Francisco Gas Company. Hearing of this the electric plant at Berkeley, called on Mr. Josselyn and said: “I have been arranging to put in an electric plant to light the residences of Redwood City, but if you are going to introduce gas I do not care to proceed fur- ther.” Mr. Iyn said all he wanted was f assurance was given that the c plant would be established without delay he would abandon the scheme to es- 1ablish gas works. Mr. Gardiner announced that he had the money and experience to carry out his plan for introducing electric light to the houses in that region, and for proof asto his ability and sincerity referred to an electric company of S8an Francisco. In- quiry on the point elicited the intelligence that Gardiner knew what he was about, and would have the plant in position to supply Redwood City within thirty days. It is the purpose also to extend the system to Menlo Park and Palo Alto. This was accepted as entirely satisfactory to all par- ties concerned. Now the peovle of Redwood want fast and frequent trains to and from San Fran- cisco, and their wants will probably be satisfied, as the towns along the line of the road, from this City to San Jose, are con- stantly growing in population and pres- AE WILLAOT BE A HEBE SHE WILL Miss Marian Nolan, the “Cali- fornia Venus,” and Her Picture. The Southern Pacific Would Not Make Any Concession and the Fight Is On. A war in passenger rates was started vesterday between the Southern Pacific Company and the Oregon Railway and | Navigation Company in the business be- | tween San Francisco and Portland. And 1 now $5 will pay a traveler's way to Port- | land. | Itmay be that the rate will go still lower, for the fight has been only fairly started. In fact, a representative of the | Oregon corporation stated yesterday that | such action was under contemplation, and | as his company relies mostly on freight for its income from the steamers possibly a ticket can be bought as low as $2 50 be- fore the next steamer sails Wednesday. The Southern Pacific introduced a *“Port- | 1and special” October 21, to run only on | the days of the steamer’s sailing. This | was on the face of it a clean case of com- | petition for passenger travel to the North- | west, and it has proved quite a success. | The Oregon Railway and Navigation Com- | pany remained passive for three weeks to | ascertain the effect of this latest competi- | tion with its special rates of $10 second class and $20 first class, including Pull- | man berths. | Receiver McNeill discovered that the steamer business had fallen off consider- ably, and in order to protect the interests of his company he decided to come to this lity'and submit a_plan of arbitration to the Southern Pacific. Accompanied by | General Passenger Agent W. H. Hurlburt | and General Freight Agent B. Campbell, he came to this City Thursday. Conferences were held that day and Fri- day with Vice-President J. C. Stubbs of | the Southern Pacitic, but instead of result- | ing in some kind of agreement it is under- | stoud that the deliberations were any- | thing but pleasant, and only served to | widen the breach. Late Friday afternoon the last meeting broke up. Mr. Stubbs explained snortly after that another con- ference would be held next morning. *‘We are still considering the question,” said he, “and will meet again. Then I shall be in a position to say what we may have done.” But that meeting was never held. In- stead of conferring again with Mr. Stubbs, the gentlemen from Portland held a meet. | ing of their own with the result that war was declared yesterday morning.
