National Bank. CORNER SIXTEENTH AND FARNAM st Sells Property— ¥ Boston m Street Entrance Thelr Stores. Lunch Two important real estate sales on Far west of Sixteenth, nounced Saturday. Another skyscraper is planned fbusiness district of Omaha. Victor B. Caldwell, vice president of the United States National bank, announced Saturday morning that the bank had at Just succeeded In buying from the Ames wstate of Boston, through ity Omaha agent, John A, Scott, forty-four feet adjoining the bank building on the west ‘on. Farnam street. This gives the bank a frontage of 110 feet on Farnam street, with seventy- four feet on Sixtrenth street, which the bank proposes to erect a skyscraper which_will be ten storles high, the exact Leight not having been determined J. L. Brandels & Sons have bought the fdjolning twenty-two feet the west from the Omaha National Bank Buildin tompany, the property running to the alley 18 feet. The price pald was $10.000, more than $3,000 & front foot, which is the high- were an for the over the Boston Lunch, which €till holds a lease for one year, after which the Brandeis company proposes to Improve the property. This Jot was recently bought by the Omaha National Bank. Bullding company as part of the purchase of the New York Life In- surance company bullding at Seventeenth and Farnam streets. Part of Big Stores, There is g rumor, which Emii Brandels refuses to confirm, that J. L. Brandels & Sons will make this new bullding a part of the Brandeis stores, glving them an entrance from Farnam street. Mr. Bran- deis said they had not decided how high the bullding would be erected. Mr. Caldwell sald the bank proposed to erect a most substantial office bullding, which would be ten or more stories in height, providing a suitable modern bank- ing house in every way fully equipped to care for the Increasing business of the bank. The bank has been persistent In its efforts to secure this property from the | Ames estate and has continued its nego- tiations even after being postively turned down five times by the estate. The bank had planned to buy the entire property of the estate on the corner, which completely surrounds the present bank bullding and is ocoupled by the Peoples Furniture and Carpet company. The estate absolutely refused to sell the Sixteenth street fron- tage, 50 that the bank now owns 110 feet on Farnam street seventy-four feet | on Bixteenth street and Planned United Structure, | Betore Union Pucific definitely de- clded upon putiing up its (welve-story head- g8t price ever pald for real estate in Omaha. Thls property 1s now occupled by quarters bullding at Fifteenth and Dodge iumxu negotiations were pending for the Vi United States Natlonal bank and the Union Pacific to unite in buying the property from the Ames estate and erecting a fif- teen-story buflding which could be used as a bank buflding and also as headquar- ters for the Union Pacifie, glving the rail- road a city ticket officc on the principal corner of the city. For some time it has been evident to the officers of the United States National bank that they needed more room, s the pres- ent bullding, while a beauty from &n artis- tic point of view, has altogether too much waste space for its location. The direc- tors had decided that.if they failed in thel: final and sixth effort to secure the Ames property they would attempt to buy the Board of Trade bullding or the Myers- Dilion corner, neither of which are on the market at the preseft time. Arthur D. Brandels is a director In the United States National bank, and it is thought the bank and the Brandels wili unite their properties and make the sky- scraper that much larger. The property now held by the bank has no outlet on the alley, while the lot bought by Brandels extends to the alley and should the biz bullding be built on both it would give the bullding an outlet on the alley. THEY APPEAL TO YANKEE PRIDE Also Insist that Business Con tions Require Official Bulld Abroad for Representatives of the United States. Frederick Townsend Martin and E. Clar- ence Jones struck a responsive chord at the Commereial club Saturday noon in thelr efforts to secure sympathetic help in thelr crusade for better homes for Ameri- can ambassadors abroad. One hundred of the leading business men of Omaha gath- ered at lunch as guests of the American Embassy association to listen to the argu- ments set forth by Mr. Jones and Mr. Martin. “We do not meet opposition anywhere, but simply indifference,” sald Mr. Martin. “'But that indifference is being overcome as the people begin to realize the showing their ambassadors make abroad in comparison with those of forelgn nations. We should have small white houses in the forelgn capitals which will represent the strengih and dignity of our nation. The day has come In all parts of the wor® where the people rule, and when the people see the present places In which the representa- tives of thls country lve they get a bad opinion of the United States. We are ask- ing all nations for gold to invest in tals country, and they get a bad impression when they think thls country cannot af- ford homes for its representatives. It 13 now on the standard of gold that we must send representatives abroad rather than on the standard of brains.” Mr. Jones told of the movement which started six months ago and which now has a-membership of over 3,00, He sald the American - Embassy assoclation was try- Ing to form a small association in each congressional district In the country te in.press upon the congressmen the necessity of haying better homes. He said that it would only cost $3,000,000 to place & repre- sentative home for the embasadors in each European capital, which he considered a snall amount in comparison to the benefits to be derived. - “We should be able to select our repre- sentatives according to thelr ability, rather than In accordance with thelr wealth, as s now the case,” sald Mr. Jones. ‘It really looks like & good investment in pro- moting peace when we consider that 7 per cent of the revenues of the govern- ment are spent In payment for past wars or In trying to provide for future con- flicts, leaving but 28 per cent for peace requirements. “We need a house that will ‘not neces- sarily cost too much, but will make & £ood appearance and combine the business of- fice with his residence, the same us the White House at Washington. We do not believe It should be & necessity for an am- bassador to have & fortune or to spend & fortune to represent. this gountry abroad. It is a real democratic ides and no: a snobbish one, as some think. ‘“We pay our ambassadors §i7,500 & year with no side expenses, while Great Britain ' pays $40,000 a year, furnishes a house and an expense account. Forelgners are im- pressed by appearances and we can better enlist the capital of these other countries if we make a good appearance and also by making them think we are with them to stay and we can do this by bullding permanent residences. We are the only great nation that has neglected to culti- vate this friendship In the good old fash- foned way. “Not & note of opposition to our plans has been heard on_our trip of two months We feel that the national pride will de- mand a change and although we do not ask any financlal help, we do ask your sympathy and want you to impress it upon your representatives In congress.' Coal Man Makes Another Increase Having Raised Price of Anthracite and Semi-Anthracite, He Now Boosts Illinois Nut 50 Cents. The coal mun has come forth with an announcement—another announcement, to be specific—that the cost of Illingls soft coal has been boosted from #6.60 to §1 per ton. Why? Oh, 'cause. The price of anthracite coal was boosted in Omaha on December 1 from §10.60 to $11 per ton, and the price of the semi- anthracite was raised on the same date Conductor of a Street Car Fined He Pays Fifteen Dollars for Assault- ing Passenger Who Objects to Paying Two Fares.
