North McCormick, 2312 PROPOSE A GENERAL STRIRE Oolorado Miners Advance Time for Holding Distriot Oonvention, SAMUEL PARKS TO VISIT KANSAS CITY Will Head o Union 8 Delegation ended by National ¥ fdent amd Fight for Repre- sentation in ¢ from the mvention, FLORENCE, Colo,, Bept. 17.—The district convention of the United Mine Workers of America of Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and New Mexico, which has been called to meet here moxt October, was today nd- vanced one month and will meet in Pueblo next Wednesday, September 2. The change is made on account of the desire of a large nunmiber of members to have a general strike called for the establishment of an eight-hour dav and some other reforms in the operation of coal mines. It is the general opinion that a strike will be or dered to take effect October 1. There are about 1,00 coal miners in the district, majority of whom are sald to belong to the United Mine Workers of America. Operitors Refuse Demands. DENVER, Sept. 17—~A special to the News from Ouray, Colo, says that the mine managers of the district have r fused to comply with the demand of the union for an elght-hour day for mill men and declare that a strike would be or- dered next Saturday. Parks Will Appeal. NEW YORK, Sept. 17.—Samuel J. Parks left tonight for Kaneas City, where the convention of the International Bridge and Structural Workers is to be held. He has been 111 all day and disobeyed his dootor's orders in going. He announced today that he is not a candidate for the presidency of the organization. A delegation of twelve men from Parks' union also left for Kansas City today. As this union has been expelled by President Buchanan, it is thought to be questionable whether this delegation will be seated. The independ- ent union has sent a delogation of three. Mitchell and Mooney Disagree. KANSAS CITY, Sept. 17.—James Mooney, a coal miner of Novinger, Mo., a member of the national board of the United Mine Workers of America, suggested in a speech at the conference with operators this morning that the coal miners and the mine owners in this district combine to raise the price of ‘coal #o that'the' oper- ators might make & good profit ahd th miners might get big wages, régardiess of what it might cost the coal consuming public. This suggestion was immediately repudi- ated by John Mitchell, president of the United Mine Workers of America, and by Mr. Lewls, vice president of that organi- zation. Mr. Mitchell sald: We, as an organization, belleve that the operators are entitled to & fair profit upon their investment and that the wage earn- ers are entitled to a fair wage for their labor. But to obtain either we would not enter a combination to extort money from the publfc. Ex-Congressman Tarsney, the operators, safd: I deem it but fair and just to Mitchell and his organization to say that I do not think a man here belleved that was the policy of his organization.
