The track was In fair shape, though soft In a fow places. Jo Gales and Ted Drunswick were the favorites in the 2:30 pace and the latter, on account of his remarkable time at Tekamah, it was thought, would land the first money easily. He started well, but could not keep it up. Sunnyslope sur: prised the talent in the second and third eats. Tuft's King Alry, a promising 8-year-old, after a rather bad showing in the first heat of the 2:40 class, pulled him- self together and took the next three stralght. Drift Allerton disappointed a good many by getting distanced in the lust heat after winning the first. The rain fell just as the last heat of this race was finished and accounts for the slow time. The running race was declared off, and as the track is a lake, there will be no races tomorrow. Results 2:3) pace: Jo Gales, br. g. (F. J. Tufta)..... Bunny Slope, b. m. (Ackley & Shire).. It really was not a very kind | thing for those friends to do, but Dusty | didn't seem to mind it much, for he made | good with a clean single | While Peorfa only made one more hit than Omaha they were so bunched as to ocount. Omaha appeared to be wholly at the meray of Barry. The six hits got were of the seratchy order, whilc the Spiriteers lined out good old-fashloned julcy ones, four of which were doubles. And thereon hangs a tale. Preston, that man who some people will recall stood out in left field for Mr. Rourke awhile this spring, made a single, a double and, by the grace of the umpire, another double. (This last one happened to travel outside of the foul line, everybody thought, but it “went’ just the same) Stewart, Ace, pulled out a two-bagger and Red Wright dld the same, so that these three gentlemen from Omaha were very much in evidence with the willow, making five of the seven hits credited to Peoria. Carter tore off a pair of skinny little old hits and Kelly, the new shortstop who just drove In from San Francisce, made one In | the ninth inning, when, with a little ball | playing, Omaha might have done some- | thing. Shugart and Hickey made the other | two. Kelly, by the way, works as if it was in him. He only had two chances, but he cared for them In a very gentlemanly way, and It was not a very easy chance at that, Genins was Genins in the fleld, but w: out hunting when it came to batting. The score: Wi ol Totaws 0000000000 0000000000 The golf teams from Des Moines divided with the Field and Country clubs yester- day afternoon, the Des Moines Country club defeating the former 6 up and the University and Waveland Golf club play- ing the latter 84 down. The day was all that the golfers could desire and both courses were in superb condition. 1t had been generally expected that the Des Molnes Country club would defeat the Fleld club, although it proved to be by only the narrowest kind of a margin There was a good gallery at the first tee to watch the players start off oh their round of the elghteen holes at the Field club and not a few of them were women The course was greatly different from the course the Country club players are used to, their greens being faster and all of the hazards bullt in, while the Fileld club hazards are all natural. This all proved a handicap to the visitors and the Field club team led out over the first nine holes, but began to lose coming home. With seven men in at the end the Fleld club led and it seemed as if the Field club would win, but the remaining players caught up and paased the Field club by the narrow margin of five up. Totals Play at the Country Club, At the Country club the University and vaveland Golf club was simply outclassed, Ithough it made a plucky uphill fight. At no time did it hold the lead, but it played all of the time over the twenty- seven holes played. The course was in ex- cellent condition, although the greens were a little heavy because of the damp weather of the last week. During the morning the visitors had played the course and were more or less familiar with it. The Country club’s team was not as strong as had been hoped, owing to the absence of | Dick Kimball, Leavitt, Strickland and Fair- | fleld, but all of the ten men in the team played consistently, only two of them fin- ishing down. Dr. Watson's play against J. R. Lemist was exceedingly fine. With the score standing at 3 down at the nine- teenth hole, Dr. Watson played the next nine holes in 40, 1 under hogle, and won out by 8 up. B. G, Guinand, the 16-year-old player of the Waveland club, attracted a good deal of attention and acquitted him- self quite creditably. He was 6 down at the tenth hole and brought the score down to 2 down In the next eighteen holes by the steadlest kind of play. The score: OMAHA. Holes Up in Nine. 1st. 2d. 84. Up.
