LONDON, Dec. 6.—(New York World Ca- blegram—Special Telegram.)—The report that John Morley 1s about to embrace the Roman Catholic religion is the revival of an old and groundless story. Mr. Morley lives near Brompton oratory and it has been his occasional custom to attend high mass there and sometimes vespers on Sun- days. He is often questioned about his sup- posed leaning toward Romanism and hat admitted that its creed attracts him the most of any, but he is and will remain cn agnostic. His wite, the widow of a Scot- tish lawyer named Ayling, is & couvert to Romanism, and her daughter by a former husband was received into the Sisters of Mercy some years ago. It was during their residence in Dublin, when Mr. Morley was chiet secretary for Ireland, that bis wite and stepdaughter became Catholics. The London Spectator, commenting some time ago on Andrew Cgru: Kift to Mr. | Morley, said: “Mr. Carnegle has given the library of the late Lord Acton to John Morley, in absolute property, to dispose of it in the way he thinks most advantageous to lterature or learning. It appears that the philanthropist millionatre, finding Lord Acton oppressed by the magnitude of his collection, which exceeded 100,000 volumes, purchased It some years ago, but left it with him for life, a courtesy very rare, though not quite unprecedented in the his- tory of literature. “We hope Mr. Morley may see his way to retain the lbrary for his lite, for he is probably the only Englishman living who can use it as well as Lord Acton, and that it may find its place of final rest in Cam- bridge or Oxford, preferably the former, since the collection was formed by a Cam- bridge professor. “It {s by & singular irony that a library collection by one of the first of liberal Roman Catholics falls to & writer of Mr. Morley’s opinions, but he may readily reply that learning and literature are always catholle.” pproach) Lot 6, block 14, ¢ Lot § block 1, addition ........
