Good Roads Train and Its Southern Tour CONVICTS MAKING ROAD 1 HE yuthern Railway Good Roads train, equipped with thirteen cars of modern rcad machinery, a com- missary car, two officer cars left Alexandria Va Tuesday October 29, 1901, for a tour of the southern tates on the line of th: Southern system in the interest of common road improve ment This novel and attractive movement for vousing attention, promoting action and intercst for the construction of improved highwa n the United State was origl I 1 and inaugurated by the National Good Roads soclation The plan co operat the government division for good road the railway system over which the train Is operated, road machinery manu facturer ind state and local interests In carrying on the work Representatives of the national a=sociation visit central points from which th greatest influence may radiate, and arrange for a week's stop of the train The co-operaticn of the local interests is secured and dates fixed for the holding of a two or three days' con vention, in which the most practical ad dresses and discussions upon the subjeet of road improvement are had. The neces sary machinery from the train Is unloaded and under the direction of the engineers and road and machinery experts in charge, a section of object-lesson road is con structed. The train visited the states of North Alabama Virginia Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgla, making eight- cen stops at the following cities Wins ton-Salem, Asheville and Raleigh, N. C.; Greeneville and Chattanooga, Tenn.; Bir- mingham, Mobile and Montgomery, Ala.; Atlanta, Columbus and Augusta, ( Greenville, Columbia and Charleston, 8. €., Danville, Lynchburg, Richmond and Charlottesville, Va Sections of modern roads constructed at each of points Conventions held and ad dressed by states, members government and were these wer governors of of congress, state legislators road directors and experts, county super visors, and most active interest aroused upon the subject District and state as sociations were formed to carry on the work so well inaugurated in the several states Never before has the subject of the improvement of the common roads of the country commanded such widespread and practical attention as at the present time Jefferson Mo prinl Rond, The Jefferson Memorial Road assoclation Charlottesville, Va., of which General Fitz- bugh Lee is president, concelved the com mendable idea of constructing a splendid modern, macadamized memorial road con necting the University of Virginia with Monticello, the home and tomb of the uni versity's illustrious founder, Thomas Jef ferson The old road was narrow, badly cut up and washed, over steep and irreg ular grades, and it was thought that a beautiful road leading to the historic home of the author of the Declaration of Inde N NORTH CAROLINA GOOD GOOD ROADS pendence, would attract wany visitors and serve as a practical objeet lesson and in ducement for better highways In the nation and be a fitting and lasting memorial to the great and beneficent Jefferson. The National Good Roads assoclation and the affice of road inquiries of the United States government were requested to inauguratle and promote this special work. The Scuth- ern railway good roads train came to Char- lottesville, Va Monday morning, March 256, 1902, and its engineers and road ex- perts commenced the construction of the road. The memorial road meeting was held in the armory in the city of Charlottes- ville and opened its sessions on Wednes day morning, April 2 General Fitzhugh Lee presided and after a welcome address by the mayor of the city, he introduced Hon., W. H. Moore, president of the Na- tional Good Roads association, Hon.
