In a very short time there will bo a lively scramble among the representatives the various school book companies for busi- ness in lowa Five years ago, when the law was new under which county or dis- trict uniformity may be adopted, thirty- three of the counties of lIowa took up the county uniformity idea. Under this law the contracts were made for a perfod of five years. This period 1s now nomrly ended and the result Is that in all these thirty-three counties new contracts will be made and the county boaras will agaln have under consideration the adoption of new series of books. It opens the fleld for lively work among the publishers. The startling fact is reported in thls connec- [tion that the school book business of the state of lowa does mot amount to over $500,000 a year and s not as large as the cigarette trade has been. Wife Not a Bankrupt. An unusual method of circumventing bankruptey proceedings is to be tried in Plymouth county. N. B. Miller of Remsen has brought suit against Mrs. Nic Mauer, wife of a farmer in Plymouth county, for the recovery of $127 for merchandise pur- chased of plaintiff. Nic Mauer, the hus- band of the defendant, went through the banktruptey court last spring and was properly discharged as a bankrupt. Among his creditors was the plaintiff. Now the latter brings suit against Mrs. Mauer for the sum named on the ground that the gocds purchased were household necessities and wero used by her aud that as she has not been declared a bankrupt he is en- titled to judgment against her. She re- cently fell heir to a portion of the estate of her father and a judgment for the amount against her would be good. Petition for a Se One of the most representative petitions asking for division of a diocese ever pre- pared and signed will be forwarded from Des Moines Sunday evening to Dubuque, there to be presented to Archbishop Keana and the bishops and the councll of the church at the meetings Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. This petition asks for the division of the Davenport dlocese of the Catholle church and the creation of @ see with Des Moines as the see city and home of a new bishop. The movement grew out of the effort on the part of the Sloux City members of the church to secure a division of the northern diocese which has been persisted in in the last ten years, Prominent members of the church here have been assured that when the division comes It will fnclude both of the dlaceses in Towa, as they are of nearly equal church population, and when Sloux City gets a bishop Des Moines will also get one. The report sent out from Sioux City that an order had already been re- celved for a division of the northern dio- 1s untrue, as Archbishop Keane de- clares positively he has had no communi- catfon from Rome on the subject and the matter s right where it was when Arch- bishop Hennessey died. However, it will be considered at the meeting of the suf- | fragan bishops and the archbishop's coun- efl in Dubuque next week, when the n archbishop will recefve reports on the condition of the church In the entiro fleld The petition which is being prepared in Des Molnes asking for the division already contains the names of most of the promi- nent business and professional men of Des Moines, the city and county ofclals, all tho members of the Towa supreme court, tho Towa Etate officers, Including the goy- ernor, and of prominent Catholics. Thero are over 12,000 members of the church in Des Molnes alone, the largest number in uny city of lowa.
