As many trees are planted in Marion, more than s many in the Umpqua region and througk western Oregon nearly in the same propor tion; so that by the year 1898, with crops, these western valleys may turn off a total ‘of 20,000,000 pounds of prunes, while Clark county, Wash., will turn off more than any valley county of Oregon at that time. A ‘very reasonable calculation of production based ‘on acreage of lant planted to prunes will show that by 1898 the Pacific northwest will tuzn off a total of 40,000,000 ani by the \d of a century an average yield should b 50,000,000 pounds, fully as much as California has ever produced in a single year. To give a comprehensive idea of the extent of this indusiry, let us survey the field in all its ex tent. Enter the state from the south, and prunc orchards are in sight from the summit of the Siskiyous and spread through Rogue River valley; they line the waters of (he Umpqua and the hiiis, ranges and valley reaches of the broader Williamette in all its length and breaith. Ascend the Colum and they are on its shores along the lower river, find place on the mount sides through Hood River valley and the region around The Dalles. Follow the rivers to the sources in Idaho, and even Montana. Wher ever you go by rail or water, prune orchard are here and there, as you {raverse western Washington, or, crossing the Cascades, tra verse the inland empire on all the raiiroads that develop that grani region. Montana, Idaho and Utah are sald to furnish good fruit and prunes are soon to be as staple a product as wheat, and we hope far more re liable. If all the land planted will bear full crops, no doubt the result will be overpro duction. Californla alone pounds per annu; but it has never happe borne full crops. It is a matter of pride in the navy that there is no ration given by any foreign nation that is equal to the ration of the United States navy, either in weight or nutri- tive qualities. And as the performer on the plano can with one movement strike a cord containing a num- ber of notes, so can the operator on this new machine compose entire words in an instant by the simultaneous application of the fingers of both hands, This is obviously an_enormous advantage over the machines in present use, which require that each in- lividual key be struck with a distinct ma The keyboard, which from its arrangement ind appearance looks more like a chessboard, urranged like a somewhat complicated printer's case. On the left hand are not lees than fifteen alphabets of lower case let- ters, each alphabet giving a different number ¢ different combinations for the formation St words. On the right hand are three alphas bets of capltals arranged like the ordinary upper without combinations of any Kind, The miscel'ancous diphthongs, and various signs used by the printer, are run in lines between the alphabets One square of the alphabets has independent keys, which in their turn co vith others. For English or any other language the buttons of the keys need only be rear- anged to mect the requirements. Father ‘alendoli says the reason for his somewhat arge keyboard is that the operator may be ible, to strike those keys which are the most nvenient in giving the required combina- ion, With a little practice the operator will al- nost unconsciously become accustomed to ce n combinations, Just as now the hand of the ompositor instinctively is guided to the ac- ustomed boxes without glancing at the case, The question naturally occurs: How is the word, the letters of which are struck simul- tancously, correctly composed? The secret of this is that so long as the fingers rest press- ing on the keys none of the mechanism is put into metion. It is when the fingers are lifted from the keys that the ocmposition is lone. This, for instance, in the word ‘“sea,” u strike it with one movement of the left hand. The the fingers are lifted as the word is spelled. Tuis is, of course, done with lightning rapidity by the persin accustomed to its use. The type used in the new machine is con- iderably lower than the ordinary printing ype. The foot of each type is perforated by slot by which it is slid on a movable T rail of steel, thus being held absolutely secure from falling out when cnce in ! The type is supplied from vertical tubes arranged after the fashion of organ pipes. At the foot of each tube is @ bolt which, when open, picks up a type, which drops into a narrow channel when the bolt is pushed back. The tubes containing the types are arranged in four series adhering to each other. All these tubes communicate through an ingenious electrical device with the keyboard governed by the ator. As the composition goes on the type slips down over a bent rail and is arranged in long standing galleys, which are removed as soon as filled up. Justification, always a sourco f trouble with the old machines, has been made a feature by Father Calendoil. He has succeeded, by a simple but effective device, n accomplishing this by working of pedals inder the machine. The operator knows just xactly how long a line he wishes, and ‘can Justify it to a nicety in the twinkling of an ave by pressing the pedal with his foot. Calendoli’s new invention looks very much ike a somewhat exaggerated upright piano. He says it can be made for considerably less noney than any of the machines now in use; o that its mechanism fs o simple any erson of ordinary intelligence will compre= hend it and use it in a couple of days. As the type ie now arranged on it, it may be taken direct from the galleys and locked up for the press, thus dispensing with stereo- typing. The copy is always In sight, render- ing correction practicable on the spot.
