A car attached to an eastbound special which passed through last evening was loaded with a small band of antelope, says the Laramie Republican. The unusual feature connected with the consignment was that the greater portion of the animals were youngsters, probably 2 months old. They were captured in the northern part of the state, and were enroute to New Hampshire, where they will be turned loose in the most famous game park in the country, if not In the world, now the sole property of the pres- ident of the Long Island rallroad. Mr. Corbin, for whom the animals were purchased, 1s the owner of what is now ac- knowledged to be the greatest game park in the country. Among the preserves are a number of Wyoming elk, shipped by Colonel William Root of this city, about three years ago. These are said to have flourished splen- aidly, as, In fact, have all other animals taken from the Rocky mountains, save the antelope. Mr. Buckingham, who was In charge of the car, has been in Mr. Corbin's service for the past two years and gave an Interesting ac- count of what is a rival to the Yellowstone National park in a small way. He stated that Mr. Corbin started in seven years ago by fencing in 5,000 arces of forest land in New Hampshire. Since then he nas been gradually buying up more ground and adding to It, until at the present time he has nearly 30,000 acres Inclosed with barbed wire fences twelve feet high. Five years ago Mr. Corbin started in the animal business by turning into his park 12 deer, 150 elk, twenty moose, thirty antelope, fitteen wild boars, about twenty buffaloes and a few reindeer. The reindeer and the ante- lope were the only animals that falled to thrive, and the increase in some of the other specles has been marvelous. It s estimated that the deer and elk now number 1,000 head, the wild boars 350 and the buffaloes sixty head. Mr. Buckingham stated that his spe- clal charge are the buffaloes. During the winter the buffaloes are handled like cattle and fed in corrals. The other animals are proving self-sustaining the year round. This year the park will be stocked with Rocky mountain sheep. A rather curious ex- periment which will be tried this season will be an attempt to éross the elk with a herd of Europeah red deer. If successful, the result will be a magnificent animal. The only large animals which Mr. Corbin has indulged In the sport of shooting have been particularly ferocious stags and some in the city of Omaha, and by virtue of an | LOOKED UPON AS A SCHEME Oirculars Which Invite Liquor Dealers td Contribute Their Cash, ASKED TO JOIN IN A SECRET COMBINE They Oppose the Movement, Rogarding 1t a8 @ Politieal Movement to Secure Changes in Liguor Laws, with Which They Are Now Satisfied. Just at this time the wholesale and retail lquor dealers of the state are being flooded with clrculars from an Indlana concern which styles itself as the Brewers' and S loon Keepers' Mutual Aid and Benefit Asso- clatin of America, with headquarters In South Bend. An agent of the concern man- ages to secure the names of the liquor deal- ers, and then follows a lot of circulars, soon after which there comes a letter which reads as follows, and is signed by the secretary: “The grand lodge having taken under ad- visement the string-nt laws against the liquor traffic in your state, have concluded to or- ganize the entire lquor trade, and have fssued a speclal fee for Nebraska. Those desiring a policy, as shown in our printed circulars, shall take the local medical examination papers to a reputable physician, pay him not exceeding $1.50 for examina- tion, and leave with him 50 cents more for the grand medical fee, and forward $1 policy fee, with application’ properly filled out. ““The members who desire no insurance, but wish to aid in uniting the trafic of the state, will forward the application properly filled cut and §1 certificate fee, entitling them to national assembly membership, which dues are 25 cents per month, After the grand lodge has received 600 or more applications from Nebraska we will institute the great lodge of Nebraska, also subordinate lodges In every city in the state where ten or more can be obtained, supply- ing them with regalias, rituals, ballot boxes, secret work, free. In the smaller localities the membership shall join the nearest lodge or retail the national assembly membership, and will work under the jurisdiction of the great lodge of Nebraska, supported by our national organizaticn, now in eighteen states. MADE A SPECIAL RATE. “We have made these special rates for you to improve, obtalning your membership at a small cost, for after January 1 our grand organizers, now in Pennsylvania, and Texas, will go through y-ur state, and then the regular fee must be paid to maintain them. Ivery state have ‘God blessed’ our coming. Give us your immediato support, fill out the papers promptly, and if possible for you to not only unite as one body to inform your lawmakers of the unjustness of existing laws, and prevent the enactment of more, but also try to carry a policy for your loved ones should death overcome you. “Write the status of the liquor interest in y'a:u' city and favor me with your member- ship.” Enclosed w!th the letter there is a con- fidential circular purporting to come from the grand lodge of the order, in which is printed portions of the Slocumb, after which follows this comment upon the liabilities of the liquor dealer: THINK THE LAW BURI OME. ““One of the peculiar hardships of this see- tion is that a dealer who only tells one glass to a man is equally liable with the man wha makes him drunk if any damag: results from him getting in that condition. Our suprema courts have uniformly placed this construc- tion upon the law and have also held that the wife can recover from the saloon keeper the money that her husband spends for liquor. As a matter of fact, it is hard to tell to what extent the courts may go, and it is becoming so that, instead of law afford- ing any protection to our business, after tak- ing_our money and glving us the right to do business, it makes it impossible for us ta carry it on with either safety or profit. ' “The law Is also burdensome in this, that although a majority of the peopl: may sign a petition praying that a license be granted, it fs in the power of one man, by filing a remonstrance, to prevent the issuance of a license."" 1 The order is a secret one and in the cons fidential circular the secretary states that he denfes the right of the law to levy a tax upon one class of business for the purs pose of defraying the expenses of any state government or the expenses of any muniel- pality. In addition to this the secretary states that he demands that the system of taxation be based upon equitable grounds without discriminating in favor of one class. Men in this city who have looked into the matter declare that they are almost certain that this is a scheme gotten up in the in- terest of a legislative lobby and that the purpose is to gather in all of the saloon and liquor men, assess them and thus make them instrumental in maintaining these workers at Lincoln during the coming winter. WILL LET WELL ENOUGH ALONE. * They can sce no reason why a speclal rate should be made to them if this is a legiti- mate enterprise, nor can they see any reason why they should take a medical examina= tion. The plan Is alleged to have originated with John C. Allen, secretary of state of Ne= braska. He explained his ideas to a number of persons some months ago, and they thought o well of them that they went to Chicago and organized, leaving him out of the deal. The headquarters were located at South Bend, Ind., but the scheme has not been very successful, and now the organizers are seeking to interest new men and capital, ~A' man has been here from Chicago consulting with Allen, and he has agreed to attend a meeting in that city ome day this week to sge If something can done to stimulatg the enterprise. George Sternsdorfl was In the city yesterday, and he has been somewhat interested in the scheme in the past. He said that the general unders stynding was that this association was tq aafist the saloon keepers of other states to sedure the repeal of some of the laws which thdy allege are unjust to liquor dealers. One of the things that they hope to overcome in this state is the law which makes a saloon man secure the signatures of a mas jority of the freeholders in his ward before he can apply for a license, and it only re- quires the sustaining of one remonstrance to offset all of these signatures. The saloon keepers claim that this gives any one who may have personal grievance against them a splendld chance to vent his spite uponm them in a business way. The general sentiment among the leading saloon men of Omaha Is that the Slocuml liquor law is an excellent one, and for every, man who thinks the tax is too high, twd are in favor of making it even higher in order to shut out the places where the bump and loafers are allowed to congregate. Most of the saloon keepers are opposed te any organization of thelr business for poli} cal purposes, claiming that it would antagy onize a liberal class of people who are o] posed to prohibition as long as the saloo keep in their proper spheie.
