CONERCIAL AND FISANCI Vieible Supply Report Was D sastrons to the Bull Iuterects, PFTER OPENING HIGHER WHEAT WEAKENED Prices Held Steady Until the Aunviously Awalted Teport Was Recelved And Then the Bears Wud Their Inning. Cnicaco, Dee. The visible supply re yort was disastrous to the bull interests today. After opening higher and advancing 8,c, wheat took a downward shoot and landea with May but ¢ higher and De- comber e bett than a, yrices. Corn was steady and cle out noteworthy change. Provisions firm and very quiet. ‘I'ie bullish sentiment which prevailed at the ciose of Saturday's trade wasm fosted at to¢ opening and wheat be the day higher. The commission houses were well supplied with buying .orders and top markets were quoted steady. London and Yrench country markets were reported steady and receipts at Minneapolis and Duluth were but 764 cars compared with 2.208 cars the preceding Monday and 1,882 cars Inst yoar. Under these favorable conditions prices were advanced and the bears retirved for a time. The general impression among traders was that today's visible supply re- port would show a decrease of at least 500,- 000 bu., ana this was adecided bull influence, further aiding the advance. Prices held steady until the anxiously awaited report was received and then the bears had their joning. The visible supply showed ad in- erense o1 108,000 bu. and immediately took o fall out of prices. The decline tor a few minutes was rapid, but was arrested fora time by reports of remarkably light Indian shipments, Closing cables were irregul Paris quoting a decline, and prices went down to the close. \May ovened at 69%¢, ad- vanced e, then fge, lost le, gained i, Jost ge, dropped Yy, fold off Tye and rallied 3¢ to the close at 69%,c. Offerings and demand were light in the corn pit and little business done. May opened unchanged at 40'yc, advanced e on better Liverpool quotations and tte bulge in wheat, lost 'y and rallied ¢ to the close where it had opened. Continued dullness was the only feature in oats. May opened unchanged at 38igc, ad- vanced Lec in sympathy with corn, and closed at the opening figure. Provisions were dull, the market opening ata shght advance on' lighter hog receipts than the estimates. Buying by the Anglo- American Packing company and Sam Wolf Sent prices up a trifie, but with a slack de- mand most of the gain was lost. As com- wured with Saturday night, January pork is Ige higher, Januury lard 10c higher and January ribs 2ige higher, TFstimated receipts fortomorrow: Wheat, 180 cars; corn, 340 cars; oats, 170 cars; hogs, £7,000 head. On the contrary, the stock market was weak | and sympathized with the heaviness of the London market for American securities. The publication of the president’s message in advance of its delivery to congress.gave the street o knowledge of its contents through the medium of the wire and the fact that i made no mention of a contemplated bond issue was regarded as a bear point and helped to depreciate values. Lon- don, Too, was in the market as a seller of St. Paul; Atchison, Union Pacific and Louisville and the west sent in a number of selling orders. The general market opened a fraction lower and in the early dealings a decline was recorded, ranging from X4 to 2 per cent, the latter in Western Union, which was sold to realize the profits of the advance.
