About 80,000 hogs was the entimate for today, but according to the roports anywhoere from 81, 000 to 35,000 head were received. Speculators ited to realize. and espeelally thiat portion the “country;" and nearly every order was filled from $18.45 to $18.4215. NEw Yonk, Jan. 9.-The stock market was unusuully active today but withal was strong, although considerable irregularity in the fluctuations oceurred. The irregularity was In a great measare due, first to the bull munipulations of the industrials as opposed to the outlook for gold shipments and pros- pects as regard to the same and the repeal of the Sherman law at this session of this congress. The sterling exchange nmrket was not higher, but while the demand was not ex- cessive, commercial bills are reported becom- ing scarcer and the prospeet of further ship- ments was looked upon as good. There is no ship likely to take any of the precious metal before Saturday and estimates of the proba- ble out-go have not yet been made. The teature was naturally Reading and its trans- actions again amounted to very largo figurcs, but this was largely due to the selling chiefly of’the speculative element Reading was heavily soid in the atternoon after the statement of the Jersey Central withdrawal beeame public, and its price wis driven down from 514 to 49%. A partial re covery to 50 occurred, but at that figure it was 161t 19, per cent lower thin on Saturday. Bullish talk on the former was reiterated with considerable effect, the stock rising to 1181, settling back under the influsnee of the deeline in Reading. Distillers, however, were still pressed for sale by the professiondl operators and failed to score udvances which its kindred stocks en- Joyed. Notwithstanding tho wealness in Kead- ng, Lackuwanna vallied from the late dep sion and closcd 1 per cent higher; the Gran- gers, including Atchison, were unusually prom- nen't in the dealings all showed strength, but other groups developed no feature of in rest. ‘The declaration of a 2 per cent cash vidend on Louisville & Nashville had no ap- purent influence on the 1ist or that stock 'he Postsays: The conditions wore ¢ whole of a naturalizing nature and ga points of lezitimate advantage in a concerted effort to affeet the general list.
