BLAINE RALLIES AGAIN An Alarming Sinking Spell Last Night Fol- lowed by an Improvement. MEMBERS OF AIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS ENCOUR- AGED TODAY TO HOPE THAT LIFE MAY RE PRO- LONGED SOME TINE—TRE PHYAICANS USING EVERY EFFORT To KEEP THRIA PATIENT ALIVE, During twenty-four hours Mr. the past Blaine bus had another very serious relapse, but | ata late hour this afternoon he was reported to be even better than he was be- fore this attack of heart failure. It was during the hours immediately following midnight that the ex-Secretary was noticed to | ¥i'h the duty of rer | It is openly charged that th Ribot are not in be failing rapidiy and only the administration of strong heart stimulants sufficed to bring him through. Tbe use of nitro-giycerine in such cases is in the nature of @ last resort after digitalis fails to have effect. ‘There is but little hope for the anxious famil in the statement that Mr. Blaine isbetter. He kept alive, it is stated, only by the utmost care and skill on the part of the medical attendants and they realize that any reiaxation on their part would result in @ fatal | termination to the long illness. The strong vitality of the sick man is shown jn the readiness with which he responds to stimulants, for afterward he seems to revive in « most re- markable manver and to become unusually | bright and observant. From then on be begins to fail As an intimate friend of the family expresses it: “It is only a ques- tion of how long the doctors can ward off an end that they know mast come before very long. The family only hope from hour to hour and they have no hope at all of any favorable termination to his present alarming con- dition. Today it was said that he was more like higold self than he has been for a long time past, but there is no telling bow long any such state of affairs can be kept up. Nitro- siycerine, which the doctors are administering now, is probably the most potent stimulant known to the profession in such cases and its use shows that every other resource has failed.”” Another Turn in the Case. Atan early hour this morning a bulletin was issued by Mr. Blaine’s physicians that indicated that their patient bad suffered another relapse and was again in a sinking condition. A joint consultation lasting perhaps an hour was held between Drs. Johnston and Hyatt yesterday afternoon. When the left the patient at 3 o'clock both concurred in the statement that Mr. Biaine's condition was decidedly improved. He had maintained the slight strength consequent upon the unex- pected raliy of the morning. He was in such a condition, it was stated, that no apprebension of an immediate dissolution was felt by the members of the family, though his condition was susceptible of a relapse at any time. Postmaster Joe Manley of Augusta, Me., who arrived in the city from New York im the after- noon, 1mmediately repaired to the Blaine man- sion, where he found the family more cheerful and hopeful than he had expected. Hesaid that the patient had maintained the improvement noted in the morning and that he did not con- sider him in a critical condition. A HOPEFUL EVENING. Dr. Johnston paid a visit to Mr. Blaine be- tween 5 and 6 o'clock in the evening. He said Mr. Blaine had rested comfortably all day and was much better. He had rallied considerably and there was no reason, so far as D'r. Johnston could see, to expect a fatal termination during the night. Mr. Manley paid another visit to the Blaine house during the evening and remained more than an hour. When he lett the bousb at 9 o'clock Mr. Maniey said he did not see Mr. Blaine, but had « talk with = Mrs, Blaine, who told him that Mr. Blaine had rallied considerably and the family were much encouraged. He was conscious while Mr. Manley was in the house and had been con- scious during the day. Several times the sick man had showed an inclination to converse, but he was persuaded not to talk. Mr. Maniey visit to Washington was for the express pur- pose of secing his old political and personal frien: DR. BYATT'S NIGHT VisrT. Just before 9 o'clock last night Dr. Hyatt drove up and entered the house. He stayed about an hour, and during his visit he made | an examination of the patient, who had awak- ened from his slumber. When he left Dr. Hyatt reiterated what Dr. Johnston had said about the condition of Mr. Blaine during the day and added that there were no signs of a fatal turn in the case during the night. With the habitual cau- tion of the expert practitioner, however, he was careful to make the reservation that no absolute prediction could be safely made in cases where the heart was involved. Still he had shown his confidence in his own judgment at this jancture by leaving the patient without the immediate presence of a physician, for Dr. Johnston, who was to remain in the house all night, was not expected before 11 or 11:30 o'clock. It was clearly apparent that Mr. Blaine had surprised his physicians by his recuperative powers, and while they attached no more meaning to the improvement realized today than an exhibition of physical ability to rally almost from the extreme rigor, it suficed to convince them that there was still some store of vitality upon which the patient might draw fora time. “One of the bright aspects of ‘the day, too, was the ability of the patient to take nourishment and to get along without extra- ordinary stimuiants. An Alarming Bulletin, The reports during the night were not of an unfavorable character until 1 o'clock, when the physicians authorized the following: Mr. Blaine’s physicians authorized the fole lowing: Mr. Blaine passed a comfortable day until 8 o'clock this evening, when he became not #0 well, and at this hour, 1 am., he is still losing strength. THE EARLY MORNING REPORTS, Dr. Johnston returned to the Blaine mansion shortly after 1 o'clock this morning and re- meined in the house all night. 4 2 c'slock everything wee quiet about the mansion and no one was apparently stirring. ‘The lights in the sick room were, if anything, dimmer than they were the hour before. Dr. Johnston left the house at 6:90 o'clock. He stated at that time that after 3 o'clock Mr. Blaine had rested and been in a comparatively comfortable potition. ‘The reports from the house at 8:30 o'clock this morning were of the same tenor.
