Sternberger, a prominent merchant of Piqua, O., and Detective Ed- ward Flynn of St. Louis arri today and identified young Harry Dewitt, the youth who was found with a number of arrested for petty larceny, as having been employed at Hursts' hotel, St. Louis, last when $1,000 worth of diamonds were stolen from Mrs. Sternberger. Dewitt was at that time a bell boy in the hotel and going under the name of Cantwell. Mrs Sternberger had given the key to her room to the elevator boy, John McGrath, being in a hurry to take. carriage for a d nd instructing the boy to leave it with the clerk. When she returned she found the diamonds and a pocketbook aining #0 had disap- peared. She at first supposed that her husband, who had frequently chided hor for rarclessness, had taken them to tease but when convinced, that he hadn'c. od the matter in the hands of the police Cantwell or DeWlitt and McGrath ested, but as nothing could be proven againt them, they were released. When confronted today DeWitt broke down and confessed to the theft, but claims MeGrath, who is now in Burlington, had secured the greater part of the stuff. An officer sent to the Bagle pawnshop, Omaha, a vortion of the diamonds had been pawned.
