Ta There a Sapreme Moment of Conselons- ness When the Soul Quits the Body? ‘1 was reading an atticle this morn- ing on how it feels to die,” smd Dr. W, H. Epworth to a reportor of the St. Louis Globo-Democrat. *No living man can tell how death feels or whethor the actual act ol dissolution is mpanied by scnsation or not. A man who, through disenso casualty, has lost consciousness—has bocome to all ap poarances dead—and is then resu tated, can really tell us nothing about it, for he did not d ‘the muachinery did not come to a complete standstill, the fife forca did not leave the body. It may be that the poet his dipped deeper than the physicinn into the awful mys. tery of death. 1t may be that ho has descried teiro s not visible to the eyes of the medical man, who interests him-. so fonly in the condition of the animal mechanism. 1 have stood by the deathbed of men who told mo they were going to hell and saw them pass poacefully to their long sleep. 1 have looked at their dead s 0 few minutes lator and saw thore- on a look of fear, of horror, that was not visiblo wnen tho heart gave its st faint throb and then stood still. [ havo had others tell me almost with their last breath that they were going to heaven, They passed away with wan, weary faces that weie pitiful 1o contemplate, but ba fore thoy beeame rigid a smilo sweot as an angei’s dream oversprond the pallie fentures, The deep lines of sutforing faded out, and the cd looked almost youthful, the wonry and worn becamo radiant. What causes this change, which every physician has noticed? When does death occur? Wao say whon the animal machinery stops, when the breath and pulse couse. ‘1L hat is what the doctor calls death, but it may not really be death after all, The spiril may not leave tho body, may not take ite departure from the easth with the last bieath, the last faing heart-beat. It may cling for some mo- ments to its shattered tenement hefore it takes tlight, before it faces vhose t rors or enters into those transcendent glories which the poet has painted The douth of the body, with which doctors only deal, may be but the prelude to o more important act, the departure of the spirit. Scienco has gone far, but it has not yet lifted the veil of mystery which the Almighty has hung over tho couch of death.™ K TR TOLEDO. Lowa, Aprild, 1301, Or. J. B. Thousands of Americans ave familiar with Artist Willard’s celebrated paint- ing, *Yankee Doodle,” with its three revolutionary volunteers, with fife and drum, calling out the defonders of Ame n liberty, When Artist Wile lard painted that patriotic picture, the Buftalo Times says, he took for hisorig inal revolutionary hero Hugh Mosher, the famous fifer of the western reserve Mr. Mosher puaid the lust debt of nature at his homo in Brighton, O., at the rips old nge of 73 yeurs. His funcral was ate tended by hundreds of old soldiers whom he had delighted with his fife, and by whom his death was regarded as little less than a personal loss. Mr. Mosher was a born fifer, as were his father and grandfather before him. He was anut.ve of Ohio and was born in Lake county in 1819, His grand- father served in the revolutionary war, his fathor in the war of 1812, and he completed the family war record by neurly two years’ service in the union wrmy during the civil war. Each of the threw generations furnished a fifer in the armies of their country, and the grandson refused to lay his favorite in- strument aside when peace was restored., ars ie had been miliav figure at public celebrations. reunions, potitical gatherings and county fairs throughout the western reserve, and had literally fifed his way into the afiections of tho people of this part of the country. It was at one of these gatherings that tho attontion of Painter Willard was drawn to Mr., Mosher, who was induced to serve as the model of the revolutionary fifer. For many years Mr. Mosher did little else than visit surrounding towns, in response to urgent requests, and no hering of old soldiers rnuhl be voted arenlly suceessful and cnjoyable one that did not count among thcse prosent the venerablo old fifer of Brighton. — Everybody sk ould know what agood moedi- .
