Paul, the ex-treasurer of, Adams county, who was last month con- victed of embezzlement and three years' imprisonment in the state peni- tentlary. The case bas been pending before the executive for over a month. A iarge number of the most prominent citizens of Hastings and Adams county sigaed petitions for the pardon of Mr. Paul. The trial judge and eleven of the jurymen who convieted him, as well as the county comumissioners who pressed the suit, unitsd in the petition for a pardon. Smith, & respectable colored lady lving on Nortn Sixtesnth street, bad a very Durrow escapo from death last might. She conducts a boarding house, and Henry Har- rison, the young man who stabbed Amos Conrad last_evening, 1s one of her star boarders. Wheu the news of his quarrel and arrest was received at the Smith domi- cile the estimable lady at once went into an alarmed her Some- i@ suggested that a dose of morphine was about the proper thing. A litue boy was at once dispatched after a guantity of the drug. When be returned Mrs. Smith unhesitatingly swallowed all that he brought her. Amos Conrad, the colored man stabbed in 8 quarrei with Heory Harrison, is still alive and bikely to remain so for some time. His condition was somewhat better this morning in spite of the statement of the doctor that ho had but one chance in & hundred in re- coveriug, He was removed to his hume on North Seventeenth street this afternoon, where is boing well taken care of. Conraa heard the remark and threatencd at the time lo get even with Harrison. Harrison left soon after and was found al the corner of Sixteenth and O streets by Conrad, Who at once assauited pim. Harrison bad s pocket kuife in bis band at toe time and when Courad stiuck him be grappled and 1n the struggle used his kuife, He expresses no regret at Conrad's condition and insists that he stabbea to kill. Frick's Assailant Given a Sentence of Twenty-Two Yea Pirrssvra, Pa, Sept. 19.—Alexander Bergman, the anarchist who tried to kill H. C. Frick, was placed on trial in the criwinal court this morning. Bergmsn conducted bis own case and pleaded mou guilty. Frick took the stand and testified to tho fact of the altemptea assassination as already told in these aispatches. This evidence was corroberated by Vice Chair- wan Leishwan, the only wituess of the as- sault, and Dr. Litcbtield described the nature of Frick's wound. Bergwan was perfectly cool during the progress of the trial, which was very brief, and the jury quickly found bim guilty.
