Paul, the ox-troasurer of, Adams county, who was last month con- victed of embezzlement and soutenced to three years' imprisonment in the state peni- tontiary. W'he case hins been pending bofore the executive for over a month. A large number of the most prominent citizens of Hastings and Adams county signed potitions for the pardon of Mr. Paul. The trial judge and eloven of the jurymen who convicted him, as well as the county cominis who pressed tho suit, unitad in the petition for u pardon. Soveral daws had been set for a hoaring of the arguments of the attorneys on both sidos of the case, but it was not until today that the hoaring was fually given. Messrs, McCreary and Smith of Hastings and Harvoy of Litcoln apoeared to argus on behalf of the petition, while Messvs. Bowen and Hoeppner appeured for the state. Both sides wero listencd to with attention by the governor. Amos Conrad’s Condition. Amos Conrad, the colored man stabbed in 8 quarrel with Honry Harrison, is sl alive and likely to remain 8o for some time. His condition was somewhat bettor this morning in spite of tho statement of the dootor that ho had but one chance in a hundred in re- covering. He was removed to his hume on North Seventeenth strect this afternoon, where is boing well taken care of. There ore but fow uew_developments in regard to the case today. It islearned that both men had been ata ‘‘party’’ during the afternoon at which beer was furnishea in large quun- tities, During the afternoon Conrad and anotver colored man induiged 1o a free fight in which Courad got. the worst of it. Dur- ing the meloe Hurrison, who with the rest of the party wasan interested speotator, shouted to Courad's opponent, “Give him bh—!" Conrad heard the remark and threatened at the time o get even with Harrison. Harrison left soon after and was found at the corner of Sixteenth and O streets by Conrad, who at ouce assaulted nim, Harrison bad s pocket kuife in his band at toe time and when Courad stiuck him he grappled and in the struggle used his knife. He expresses no regret at Conrad’s condition and insists that ho stabbed to kill. District Court in Session, ‘The September term of the district coury in and for Lancaster county opened this mornming with Judges Hall and Tibbetts on the vench. Frick's Assailant Given a Sentence of Twonty-Two Yeurs. Pirrssura, Pa, Sept. 19.—Alexander Borgman, the anarchist who tried to kill H. C. Frick, was placed on trial in the oriwinal court this mornng, Bergman conducted his own case and ploaded not guilty, Friok took tho stand and testified to the fact of the attemptea assassination as already told in these dispatches. This evidenco was corroberated by Vice Chawr- man Leishman, the only wituess of the as- sault, and Dr. Litebtield described the nature of Frick’s wound. Bergman was perfectly cool during the progress of the trial, which was very brief, and the jury quickly found him guilty.
