Their boat was capsized, Like Danlel, of Bibli ne, Some Chi- cngo Reporters Defy the Lions. At the conclusion of one of Barnum & Bailey’s matinoes in Chicago last month Mr. George Conklin invited a few roprosentatives of“the press into the maiu tent, where, he sm1d, a private performance was to be given. Hae insisted on placing thoreporters in a ring by themselves. While their attention was oeing distracted by a sham scufiile in tho other end of tho tent Mr. Conk- (in, with malice aforethought and biooa m his eye, lev three wild un- muzzled African tious loose upon them. The vross did not got rattled, however, but simply picked the kings of the jungle up by the back of their very loose necks, pried their mouths open to see their teath, and finaily walked out of the ring while the lions calmly lay down in the sawdust and looked at orie nnother with expressions which seomed to say: *We cannot harm the good.” Iho three lions, by the way, wers just 4 months old and their feet tonched Mothor Larth for the first time, and tae extraordin- ary nerve that was required to beard tho lion in his sawdust lair was born of the fuct tha the shaggy beasts had not yet cut their eye- teoth. This is oniy one of tho uttractions of the great show, for 1 every departmont there is moro novelty and new features than any other show coming hers contaius. If. the reader will stop and think that it requires a princely for- tune to equip a show like Barnum & Bailey’s and then go to any mercantilo agency, he will tind that no other showmen 1n America have the money to put out a show of half its sizo. Ihis being so, how can they havo an exhibition to compare with Barnum & Bailey's! Again, thero is only one man capable of putting on a spectaclo like olumbus” and ho is_Imre Kiraify, now under contract to the Barnum & Bailey show. Ifanyone will take the trouble to measure the main tent of any other show coming bero he will discover that it Is not Jarge enough to contain three circus rings, two stages and a hippodrome track. The al- leged quartor-mile track will dwindle to ono- sixteenth, just one puny little platform will be found in u citeus ring, the center polos no higher than a Salvation Army tent, the vand scarcely up to tho lattor's twelve tiers of seats, as against Barnum & Bailey’s thirty- s1x, and s0 on all tue way through. The reality blushes before the advertisoments aad tho facts seom to say, “*how stupid to comparo this cross-roader to Barnum & Bulav’s, which comes September 14, for we are good cnough in our way and can hold a faie com- parison with Lemon Bros , but no amount of tion can mako the public beliove that & bumpty-dumpty ‘town hail’ show can equal a Heary Leving production.” - DeWitt’s Sarsapariis o incroases the anetite aud tom.
