Whon he received the parcel at Juniata, however, and in tho middlo of the night took it into his cellar where no human oye could sce him open it, he discoverod that ‘‘the scoundrels had changed boxes on him and the parcel contained nothing but blank paver. Mr. Ballinger was first astounaed, then indignant, and finally he bocame desperato and resolved to have the ‘green goods" mon punished. He consulted the Pinkerton agenoy and was reforrod to the secret serv ice of tho United States treasury. In tho correspondence which followed ve- twoen Mr, Ballinger and the Troasury de- partment tho former admitted that ho bought what he supposed to be $25,000 in bills which looked as good @s any money. “The correspondenca was referrod 1o Attor ney Baker with instructions to prosecute and Mr. Ballinger was arrested accordingly. Since his trip to New York Mr. Ballingor has lost his stock of goo at Juniata, the mortgago having been foreclosed, und he has been taunted and jeered At by tho natives to such a dogreo that he has been obliged to keep indoors a good deal 10 enjoy even the semblance of peace. Spoaking of the matter Mr. Ballin- gersaid: “I believe I could identify those fellows that sold me the money, and I think 1 could find the place all right. They were doing a rushing business, I think tnere were about twenty fellows at the ofico seleeting goods when I was there,” Ballinger is a young man apparontly notover 25,and his bump of erodulity is ovidontly de- veloped to enormous proportions. Jewett, formerly connected with the Howell Lumber company, will be obliged to go te Kansas City or St. Joseph and stand trial as a member of the firm of Howell, Jewett & Co. upon a charge ol hav- ing defraudea the railroad companies by means of false weights. One member of the firm was found guilty in tho United States court at Kansas City and Judge Dundy thinks that if the - dictment 18 held to be good Mr. Jewett will have to appcar beforo the court in Missouri to make answer to tho charge. There are still some other points in tho caso that havo to be presented beforo the judge will decide, however, to send Mr. Jewett to Missouri. ——— The O1d Timers are Not in It. Imperial Gets a Lino at Last—An Omun Made Engine, Tho town of Imperial out 1n Chase county, which has been prayving for a railroad for these many years, is to bave rail communica- tion with tho outside world unext month, The B. & M. has resumed work on the ex- tension which rested at Wauneta some tima ago, and will have it completed perhaps as early as the middle of August, but surely in season to move the abundant crops of that section. I'he distance from Wauneta to Im- perial is about twonty miles. The graao has been made for some time and about five miles of it have been ironed within the past two or three wooks. This extousion is lmd out to a junction with the Choyenno line at Holyoke, but the track may not be extended beyond Imperial this soason. The Union Pacitic's locomotive 1,100, the mammoth engine recently turned out of tho Omaha shops, is belng tested in actual ser- vice on the Sherman hill, Cheyenne. It is intended that it shall take the place of the two locomotives now mneeded in hauling trains ovor the divido, Her driving wheol wolght is sixty-seven tons, and her total weight, including the tender, is 110 tons.
