Curry, the champion typewritiug oporator of the world. Miss Curry comes from the Henley Busi- ness college of Syracuse, N. Y., where she has charge of the practical department of that institution, She is u bright, intelligent young lady und has succeeded in winniug meny fricuds since ber arrival in this city. ‘Thie exorcises lust eveniug were under the control of . H: Mayhew of this oity, who brought Miss Curry hero for the purpose of convincing the public that the Smith Prem- ler typewriter is capable of attaining & higher rate of speed than any other machine that bas yet beea placed upon the market, Toe exhibition last night was couvincing evidence that sucl the caso. In the first exercise, which was a dictation, Miss Curry reached @ speea of niaety-eighl words per minute and every lotter aud word was cut as clear as though the rate of speed had uot beeun balf so great. Upon another trial Miss Curry reached 114 words in dictation, 1o this the justiication and the stroke of ihe letters were absolutely perfect. Then the old exercise which all typewriter opera- tors uso when they practice for speed was taken up. This' familiar ‘senteuce was ratiled off at lightuing speed, wnd accordin, to the watches beid by the judges Miss Curry made 163 words per minuta. Following this she wrote 170 words and at th we time carried on an animated conversation with Toun Wilson, the well koown court stenographer, The Rreat event o7 the evening was when Miss Curry cut logse und wrote 150 words per minute. R. 8. Iicll, who held the watch, declured that it wis the most rapid work that he had ever witn ssed. No doubt that Mr. Bell told the truth, as it was a fact that that broke all previous autheoticated records except her own. The announcement brought out & hearty cheer. Miss Curry clauued 1o be able Lo BEE: SATURDAY, minute than any otlier operatcr on any other machine, A question arosd {iftt the machine was put up for this special purpose, but this was easily disproved, as the dictation oxercise upon & ‘Spith Premier that taken frém tl rooms of business ocollege. The machine upon which the nigheht rate of speed was made was ono whichi hgs boen used by Miss' Curry during the past nine months. Thé manner in which tho Smith Premier per- formned its work last hight convinced tie witnesses that it 18 the machine which must soon take the place of all others if accuravy and speed aro to ba takon into consideration At intervals duriiig the eveningthe Omaha Baojo-Mandolin club furnished some delight. ful music ana at 11 djose an elegant and dninty lunch was sived in honor of Miss Curry’s visit to this of Drink! pagne. Of forty years record, Try it - Typewriting Spoed Exhibitions a Fake, In newepaper parlance I desire to say thut the exhibition of wonderful speed now and then displayed by ‘‘exhibition operators” on writing machines are fakes pure and simple. Beyond exploiting some typeriter*** they demonstrate absolutely nothing beyond showing what bad work a type- writer can be made to do****they set a bud example to thoughtless 'operators ***%with the result that many mnchines are banged and rattled to pieces****and many an operator****hecomes o careless and valueless typist. 1 have before me a sample of this rapid writing vecently accomplished**** and the manufacturer of the machine on which this bad writing was executed is flooding the country with accounts of the test. ‘What does he prove by 1t? Certainly not that his machine will do such work us is roquired nowadays. No sane employer would tolerate for a moment such work as is displayed as the result of this exhibition, Some manufacturers, I am pleased to see, appreciato the fact that such tests prove very little, They employ them or the purpose of proving to themselves that their machines will respond with accuracy and precision to marvelously rapid anipulation, but they do not spread broadeast accounts of What has been accomplished and attempt to mis- lend the public into believing that such rapid work can be done in the course of ordinary business. I havs before me a sample of work recently written by Charles H. McGur- rin of Kulamazoo, Mich., in which 190 words were written in 60 seconds (eight words more than the Syracuse speci- men), and the alignment is perfect, and only once did one letter overlup an- other, and yet the manufacturers of the machine on which this work was done avo not advertising it; for though they know it cannot be 2qualled on any other machine, they know also that it is far beyond what can be accomplished in actual business and that to encourage operators to erdeuvor to attain such speed would simply result in a mess of bad work which would be a credit to no one. Truly, speed contests in either short- hand or typewriting, amongst practical men and women of the grand aggrega- tion of shorthanders and typists, are in disropute; and this is as it should be. Beyond affecting silly and foolish boys and girle, they carry little, if any, weizht. : : The day of speed contests has gone by. F. H.
