ONE CENT PER MILE. | ¢ | Review of the Zone System of Rallroad Ratos Established in Hungary. Chicago Tribune: The recent death of Gabriel von Baross, Hungarian mine ister of commerce and transportation, | gives oceasion for a review of his great work in the establishment of the zone system of passenger teavel by rail in Hungary. The Review of Reviews for June contains a communication on the | subject from Dr. Korosi of Buda-Pesth, which does full justice to the memory of the decensed 1n connection with that work. Three years ago the rates of rail | travel in Hungary were about the same as in the more thickly settled portions of the United States, average | fare was a trifle less cents per mile. With the ning August, 1859, the government roads in Hungary, having u total length of nearly 4,000 miles, adopted what is known as the zone system, and it goon after also adopted by some of the rivately owned and opernted railroad s “rom Buda-Pesth us a center the coun- try iedivided into thirteen zones, each having an average bréadth of a little more than ten miles, the limit of the | outer one being 225 kilometers or 140 miles distant, and all outside of that be- longing to a fourteenth zone. With the utilization of cheap steamboat connections the traveler can now accom- plish the long journey f-om the Rouman- | inn border all the wiy to the Adriatic sen, thence by water to Ltaly and by rail to Rome, for aboutone-fifth of the old- time charges. For the small distance travelers, who wish to go simply from one station to the next inside of zone limits, there is a “‘vicinity taviff,” which includes a uniform ticket of 4 cents for one station and 6 cents for two stations, Besides this workingmen in groups are carried at half the prices.
