TALKED BACK T0 THE PASTOR "Ohristian Science” Followers Take Excep- tions to a Sermon by Dr. Savidge. LIVELY SCENES AT THE PEOPLE'S CHURCH The ¥ sh stor Explalns Why the Science uld e Rel d un n Trick of the Devil a e of the Church A'he congregation took a hand in the servi- ces At the People’s church Sunday evening, and fora timo it looked as though the serv- 1ces of the police would be needed, but Pas tor Savidge was equal to the cmergency. “(‘hristian Science' was the sermon topic, and of the large audienco present several were disciples of Mrs, kiddy. Among these was Mrs. Elliot, wife of a promirent locs Christian scientist, and sho took 18sue with Rey. Savidge and talked back during the services in a way that created a decided sen- eation. The preacter was handling the subject without gloves. Mrs. Eiliott who occupied a front seat, accuscd the minister of not quoting Mrs, Iiady’s doctrine on sin correctly, and went on at lenglh 1o explain the Views of the scientists, he audience 100k a haud, ana_cheers and hisses were mingled, Some of the pastor's frienas wanted to cject the scientists, but Mr. Savidge protested that he could carry his own end of the fight, and ho did, answer. fug points raised by tho scienticts, and going into a thorough discussion of the sub- His sermon was as foilows Te ;‘l roph 1ly shall bring in dam denying the L chtthem, and upon the b sWift destraction. My subject tonieht 1s “Christian Science.” 1 bave heard moro orless of Christian science for n number of years, but never thought it necessary to make a study of it until lately, and 1 am freo to say that I am completely astounded at what I find, A Trick of the Devil, Some who have beon truly converted in this church have been won over by this trick of the devil. Dr. Patton of Chicago savs “Who has no’ had his attention called to this subject becauso of tho 4nronds it has made on the faith and stability of his members? Some of the most refined, some of tho most sincero people, have been lod away by tho seductive and guasi-Christian spirit of its teaching: “Phero can bo o question in the mind of any one who s given the subject even casual attention, that it is doing ereat damage.” My own thought is that the real harm that 1 being done 1o souls all around us is not at ratood by our christian people. God wakaup His own followers, that men shall not perish for lack of knowledg The report has boen circulated quite widely y that tho pastor of this church was to_become a Christian scientist. 1 : Notas long ns I have my reason or y respect for the word of God. Somo of velievers and tenchers of Christian co have ofton attended the services of this church, and they have been very kind to me persoually, and have helped me with their means in tho support of this_work, for which Isincerely thank them. But whilo we welcome all to come and hear tho gospel weo will not permit any to teach principles in direct apposition to tho plain worlk of God. Rensons For Rej 1 reject christian scienco because of what it is. There1sa good deal of mist thrown the wholo subject, but Caristian science is nothing more nor less than rofined skepticism or athelsm. Itis ancient pantheism dressed up in modern clothes, Pantheism said, “All 1s God.” It identified the locality of being with God. Not that each being is God, but that the whole essenco or substance proper is God. Curistian sciencesays, *God is ail." Christian science is not suméthing new, but itis tho religion of the Hindoos of 5,000 years ago revived. Itis ouly the nonsense of what they had in Bombay and Calcutta centuries ago. The teachiugs of Christian scienco are in direot conflict with the word of God. As to the persorality of God, Mrs. Eddy says, “ehovah is noi a person—God 16 prineiple.” Siliot of this city says, “God is not a : He is principlo whose personality is yond conjecture.’ What docs our authority say? spirit.—-John, iv., 24. In Matthew, v 15 called “Fatlier.” Tho word presents God 88 a spirit without body or parts, but as a person. Ho walked in the garaen. Ho talked with Moses amid the fires of Sinai. When Josus prayed to Him in the garden ho ad- dressed Him as & person, calling Him “father.” ‘Che bible everywhere speaks of God in language that implies aistinct personality, and this belief in a porsonal Goa is the very corner stone of revealed religio The Essence of At ‘The denial of & personal God is the very essouce of atheism and the idea that evory- thing that is is God is pure pantheism, which is only another name for atheism, sinco panthelsm denies the existence of any God except the combined laws and forces of the universe. Ihe atonoment of Christ will, of courso, bo denied by theso people. 1f (iod benot'a person, then he never came in the person of the Christto dio for a lost race, Mrs, Eady commits herself on this subject sad savs: “The signification of God being €ood, the term Christ Jesus may be rendered s a good man.” “T'his woman comes to Jesus and says: “‘iiail, Master,” but gives Him tho kiss of botrayal. According to Mrs, Eddy’s teachings Josus Christ is simply o perfect man, yet no more perfect than is any and every man in bis essential being, Jesus was @ Christ but not the Christ, And as a Christ He was only that which every man is in his true nature, 15 a refined and s divinity Christian science says *‘atonement is not blood flowing from the voins of Jesus, not so much the death ou the cross, but the cross. boaring deathless life which was left by Josus a5 an examplo to mankiud uud rausoms from all sin all who follow it.” But God says, “It 1s the blood that maketh an atonoment for the soul.” Wo read in I John i, , “Every spirit that confessoth not that Jesus Christyis come in the flesh is notof God.” There is always & class of coplo who dony the flosh and blood side of 8. But they are not of God. he second coming of Christ’ which Paul speaks of ifty timos in his opistlo and which 18 promised 5o plainly in Acts i, 2, 15 totally repudiated by tho teachers of this modern heresy. who pri osios, © ing “Sclence,” sudbtle denial of They R, Pray Nor will you be surprised when I remind you that the doctrine of prayer is not accept- ed by Mrs, Eddy and her followers. If there bo 1o personal God, how can I pray | Mrs. Eddy says, “It wo pray to God asa person, this will prevent us from letting go tho buman doubts and fears that attend all personality,” “Prayer to & personal Goa affects the sick like a drug that has no ncy of its own." While holy scripture says, “lu ovorsthiog, by prayer and supplication, with thauksgiy: fng, let your requests be made known unto God." ‘Christian science also boldly denies the existence of sin or even its possivility. Mrs. Iddy says, “Spiritual man s never wrong,” “Sin 15 o beliof ouly king, there 15 no sin; man holiness.” Hear what ( s, Romans, “By one man siu entercd into the world, and death by sin; and so doath passed upon all tnen, for that all have sinned." H. M. Tenny says, *Tho doctrine of sin which Christiun scleice toaches is one of the most harmful errors of the system, That there 1 no sin 18 tho logieal outcome of the denial of mau's persovality. Man, as the exprossion of God, can ouly refiect what 18 in God. God sins not, so wman, the constantly reflected = idea of God, cannot sin. The mortal wind, which without auy responsibility of the reul mind, has fallen into 1uverted thinking is alone the author of the idea of sin, Sin then may bo defiued Lo be the shadow of & shadow of u shadow. That is, when your tooth aches belfeve it does not, and say it does not. and it wil. not ache. In other wors as some one has said, ‘Just lie about your physical ailments and stick to the lie until you are well.” Knowing what 1 do now of this nonsense, 1do not wonder at tho aimost horrible treatment of Mrs, Eliza- beth Hagerman, Think Death a Delnsion. Death is considered by these peopie a delu- sion. Dr. Cowdry, a Christian sciontist of Hartford, Conn,, died in 1880, He was lec- turing to'the people and_ declared: ~“Chris- tian scienco can defy death.” Almost at that instant he fell under a stroke of paraly: sis. He challenged death—death acee the challengo and gained the vietor, personality of Satan is denied, Ho tias no opposite,” says Mrs. Lord cortainly made u big mistake when thougbt that the devil tempted Adam and Lvo and tried His hana on Job. Tho devil himself could not buve formulated a croed better suited 1o his desives than these | peonie have done, Some of my conclusions are that 1 cannot work with men and women of this beliof. The wholo svstom of Christian science teach- ing and practice is subtle and eaiculated to deceive and Gestroy many.
