Views of Leaders Regarding a New State Organization. WILL CONTEST AND PROTEST. Meeting of the “Anti-Snap” Convention of Democrats at Syracuse, Srnacuse, N.Y., May 31.—Delogates to state conventions do not asa rule turn out 0 early ‘on convention day nor in so good condition a was this morning the case with those who are here to attend the anti-midwinter democratic convention. Many were Inte abed and many others were busy in their congressional district caucus. Wim. Ii. Grace was bu this morning caucusing hin delogati New York. The Buffalo men, after m were attending to matters of detail Monroe and his corps of workers visional committee were busy awa: the morning. But today all hands are apparently fresh, are pushing forward the final details, tributing hal A subjec youtht pore ng fellows they ranging from twenty-five to forty years of age, and full of eager push and vim. This day, which will cover, it is believed, the making and unmaking of some men and some interests out of the east without a cloud. The sun 1 along and comni to do business upon the fresh lin 1 theleaders. The heat grew and in- tensified and men met and assured each other Hundreds of ‘that were selling for # nickel ch paper fans, having upon one side the hideous result of an attempt to portray the fea= tures of Grover Cleveland. The portrait waa Villainously wrought, but the fans were useful and they sold. Cleveland badges, in batton ‘ibbons tied in fanciful knots and in bands, were ever ld be no doubt of the disposition ds, for hundreds of lapels and many esof women bore the bright Cleveland ribbons, with their gold «tamping. The con- vention might dimvow the advocacy of Mr. Cleveland as a presidential candidate, bat the delegations left little doubt of their individual desires. The element of representation which comes from the fi 11 villages to this convention was px ticemble to- day. The great majority of these delegates came in on the morning trains, for they had sleptat home rather than incur unnecessary hotel expenses, but today they are here, earnest and grave, and bearing the impress of Conscious re- sponsibility in their manner. Brown bearded, hard-handed young men they are as a rule, those delegates from the country districts. CONTEST OR PROTEST. While eager to listen and willing to be en- lightened, these earnest, plain men are none the less critical. They have only one moving pur- pose, and that is to secure success to Grover ve An ax to them is an ax and @ spade isa spade. They employ no diplomatic device of speech to clouk their desires. There is in their methods no code of “keep-it-darjg” tactics. The feeling among those not from cities, is probably in favor of « protest im Chi- cago and not a contest. But the question dur= ing the forenoon was being shaken down to a determination among the congreasional district delegations and the outcome could at 11 o'clock be stated beyond any question. The best in- formed opinions, however, at that hour found in the outlook little doubt upon the whole that ‘a solid contesting delegation would be sent out from today’s convention to the national body at Chicago. ‘The consensus of careful judgments bent to this course as the only methods of effectively pressing the sentiment of this convention the Chicago convention. The lower have no two opinions on the subject, and other sections of the state—Chemung, Erie and Os- wego counties—were strongly bent upon a con- test against the midwinter convention, as being premature and non-representative. A RIVAL PARTY ORGANIZATION. The delegates found some words of advice and warning staring at them from the editorial columns of the Syracuse Courier this morn= ing. ‘The Courier suggests new danger. It ‘ays that the May convention warecalled to serve notice on the national convenflon that the February convention was not represente- tive of the democratic sentiment of the state, and, that having been accomplished, the con- T has no further mission. Ie It has been darkly hinted scheme of the convention embraces in its scope the setting up of a rival party organization Throughout the state. ‘Thats rather “than” the promotion of the nomination of any candidate, is said to be the main object these ma: have in view. Forewarned is fore- armed. Delegates from the interior have not, we are sure, come to Syracuse ed to take such a step as this. Weadjure them to think twice before they are persuaded into *o desper- atean expedient, The perfecting of a rival party organization would lead to a train of evils compared to which even the sending of @ rival delegation would be harmless.” Ex-Recretary Chas. 8. Fairchild said concern ing the Courier editorial: “If we stayed bere @ few days more there is no doubt that there would be many vexatious i pounded. Never was a convention confronted with such serious problems, and yet I may at the same time say, never was a convention's line of action plainer, As I see it, our duty is to represent the people of this state by holding as nearly perfect an organization as possible. Now, in regard to our continuing the present organization or striving for a new state organi- zation, I want to say that it will all depend upon our reception at the national convention. If we are recognized we shall continue the present provisional committee and make it the that the managers it atate committee. We do not believe that after ition we would be batching « rival democratic organization. It would be ntative organization, We are not fighting factionally, and even if you at us on the plane of a contest we should be it in courage and unrepresentative did ‘we not complete the work of the convention completing a thorough state organization.” “I cannot see any~ inent in this. You might as . n't hold any convention. should we not perfect a new organization 'T the democrecy to tube So of the snap Gent, papecccnts Ex-Mayor Grace said as Mr. Fairchild.” i i it I F i i 5 i fi if F i I g i i ; 7 i i : EE i E g F F
