Bouth Sioux City will derive a benefit from the recent fluod in Sloux City, As it lies high and dry quite a numver have already signified theirintention of locating on the Nebraska side of the river. Quite an effort 13 being made to create o sentiment against the provosed Short Lino bridge in favor of a combinea wagon and foot pussenger bridge, The argument 1s being used that a bridge constructed and malntained by railroad compauies would be extortionato in tolls, ete. The opposition is meeting with very little oncouragement, as the people reulize that a bridge constructed by any company would be of incalculable valuo to South Sioux City. In fact, the only drawback to the city is the much needed bridge, and 1ts building makes the future growth of South Sioux City a certainty. ‘Two or three former residents ot this city were sufferers in the Sioux City flood. The peoplo are colleoting a purse for their bonefit., The river has about ceased cutting the bank on this side and no further encroach- ments are feared, unless the June rise should be unusually high. There seems Lo be a sort of blue clay under the top sandy soil that bas withstood the water and checked the washing. The old Coliseum building is rapidly un- going a series of transformations in preparacion for the first annual exposition of the Nebraska State Manufacturers and Con- sumers association, which begins June 11 and continues for eleven days, The chango is far from boing complote as yot. The old posts and rafters are conspicuous in all their unhewn roughness. The araperies that served to conceal their unshapely outlines on former occasions of festivity are unsightly rags of tattered bunting, and the ugly green signs with their legend, ‘No Smoking Al- lowed,” croak dismally on their haugings, solitary remindors of the days whea a jolly crowd of skaters rumbled around the polished floor and groups of merry mauskers danced under the scintillativg glare of the electric candles, But the combiced huboub of ascors of saws and hammers, the bustling array of sarpenters and decorntors and the energetic efforts of tha managers of the enterprise wive promiso of ereat things beforo another week shall pass. Interesting Exhibits, Among the most interesting out of town exhibits will be that of the Kearney Cotton Milling compan; Their float, which was shown at the silver anniversary at Liucoln, is o unique design, represeuting one of the great manufacturing interests of the state. It arrived yesterday in charga of B. I Smith of Kearney and was hoisted into the bundiog through a huge door that was cut to receive it. It'is anexact facsimile of the plaat, even to the bulkheads of the mill race, with the water drippin 1ncessantly over the top. .The interior wi bo lighted with electricity. The body of the float " is covercd with figures illustrating the growth of Kearney and Buffalo county from 1867 to 1802. Mr. Smith says that Kearnoy is enthusiastic over the exposition. The en terprise is regurded as an important event in the history of Nebraska industries, and the city council did not hesitate to appropriste the mogey to construct the float.
