SUFFERING FROM BRAIN FAG | Omaha's Base Ball Sense S8leeps While Kansas Oity Wins the Game. JIMMY MANNING'S TOO EASY VICTORY Combination of Poor Playlng and Lucky Batting Opened by the Cowboys—~Toledo Atrcsted Again—TIndianapolls Beats Columbus. Kansas City, 0; Omaha, 1, Toledo, 7; Fort Wayne, Indisnapolis, 2; Columbus, 1, CCORDING TO A learnod physician every oduoatod man, whother he be a lawyer, clergy- man, business man, journalist or ball player, bolieves theoretically that he ought to have a certain amount of physicial exercise to maintain health g and to preserve his powers of thought and action. But this learned authority is off his base. T'he men constituting the Omaba ball team aro all educated and none of them, not even Uncle himself, believe in any such a propos- terous doctrine, The game of ball they stacked up yesterday incontrovertibly cor- roborates this. Now isn’t that so? Thero wasn’t a man in the tesm who could have beaten an ico wagon around the block. The aay was a lovely one, barring its calorical tendencies, and a huge crowd as- somblea at Sporteman’s park to see Jimmy Manning's husky Cowboys ripped up the back. But Your Uncle's childron flimflammed the whole party. Read This Closely. And still ho is a brainy man. But the brain, you know, is not a singlo organ, but a collection of many organs, much alike in general structure, and more or less intimately assooiated, yet distinct in location and in function. 1t, as a whole, is nothing but a group of colls, and whon thoso cells act their ‘siructure chaunges—n part of the substance of each 1s dccomposed and carried off by the fluid which bathes them, leaving a minute cavity, This loss must bo repaired to enable the cell to recover its enerzy and powers, sud for this purpose rest and a suvply of prover nutritive material are essontial. If the cells of the nervous centers, whose special functions are perception, invention und consciousness, are inactive, we have what is known as sleep, but ono group of cells may slcep while others work. There 1s @& group for mathematics, another for compounding medicines, one for proparing & non or an editorial, and still others for painting a pic- ture or composing a pleco of music, Any one of these may be resting, or in other words, asleep, while the others aro active. And that was what ailed the Omahas yes- terday afternoon. Their base ball nerve centers were in a trance, but they were very much awake every other way. In juggling they could have given tho great Hermann cards and spades, and u few crowbars, and shown him a now ‘trick every minute. In this admirable qualification the dapper Mr. Sheibeck and the rubiscent visaged Colonel Vickery wero particularly roficient, whilo Gilks aod Collopy and nole Dave himself, gave evidenco of an apitude of acquiring the art with an empha- sis that would have knocked the aversge father of a small boy into a fit. On & Peaceful Sabbath, Too. Right in tho faces of that vast and happy crowd thoso greasy Cowboys uncoiled their lariats and the way they yanked thoss Rust- lers around over the dandeliozed sward was enough to ive n woodon Indian the night swoats. Mr. Corcoran, too, was there in all his bright_youth and freshooss, and what the roprosentatives from Kawburg failed to do he did himself. s The boys who fumed and sweat and ronstad on tho bloachers were the only people who had any real fun, and from start to finish tnoy cid littio eise than hoot and kid and guy tho players, Uncle undeservedly coming in for & large zob of thoir attention. Thomas Gilbert Vickery was in the box for us. He pitcbed iudifferently and was basted and pasted until the whoels in his hoad went *round and 'round with a velocity that would have made a monkey seasick. Paync—intense pain—operated the firing end of tho Cowboys’ battery, and although ho floated 'em over bigger'n Watermelons the Rusders couldn’t have touched 'em with a barn door. Weariness from the Very First, Promptly on tap with the vesper bell, Francisco Steibeck slipped gayly ap to the late as if he expected to rake off a froe Jancn. " Ho archon onp 0t to, General Ly tiiv Gussie Alberts took another from off the bat of the boy from over the Rhine, and Kelly came within a couple of feet of hitting the bail three times in succession, and with the rest of the boys ambled out among the um- bellated clovor in the field. Here's whero the plot thickens. Avothecary Manning struck a_statuesqe wititude on the pan and looked at Vick out of thoso great fuwn-like eyes of bis, until Vick just picked up first base and handed it to bim, He couldu’t get r1d of him any other way. Sunday, likewise, partook of Gilbert's bon- eficence, ana itel Eddyjorg took his on_the dub of a fumble by the coming thira base- man. This filled the bags with Cowboys and Your Unclo with sorrow. Then big Jem Carney, who thinks he can lick Juck MeAulifte, “but he can't, bitan casy oue down to Sby and lit out for first with Corcoran at his heels, Siwultaneous with this, tho Apothecary split for home, Sty fired the ball square into North, South, Eastand Wostlake's lily white hands, and be dropped it just in time to allow Manuger Jim o prance scross, But Bobby snatched the sphere up quickly, however, and appeated to Corcorav, who bad turned *round by this time, for his decision, “Safe!” spitefully yolped Corco. *“You never saw the play!” remonstrated Westlake. Oh, yes, 1 did,” replied Mr. Corcoran, 1 hayo un oye in the buck of my head.” And Mr. Corcorau was right. He bas got three eyes in his head, but that's all there 13 in it. Well, then MeMshon struck out, Gussie sacrificed aud Lytlo pinted her for a base. Four runs was the result, four ruas off a singlo baso Lit. That was sad. Omuhw's First, Last and Ouly, Andrus went out from Collopy to Uncle and the Rustiers came in for their second piece of pie. They made u run, the only one of the game, and 1his is how they did it} Josephus Visner hit sare aud stole second and third, too. Theu Coliopy broke s shou d'r blade reaching for Puyne's pump- kins uud went back to the bench. But your Uncle swashed her safe, aud Josephus soum- pered home. ‘And then all hope expired, In their balf the Cowboys made another round up. Manning commenced it first. This ime he didu't strike an attitude, but one of Viek's bighest priced. It went to Mr. Visner's wor- ritory. Sunday did Jikewise and Eiteljorg ditto, Mauning coming in. Carney drove one to Shy and =hy jugeled, Sunday follow- ing Jimmy bome. It Monduy had .been on base he would bave scored, too, but Kitel- |org was a trifle slow, aud he balted at third, On McMahon's sacrifics, however, he joined Maoning and Sunday atthe oatweal can, aund on Gussio's two-sacker over the fence, big Jem came ia for sobooner, 100. ‘That was four more runs. Then after blanking the Rustiers iu the third, they took another. ““That's plenty, boys,” cried Manager Jim: “now take things casy. ‘These fellows can't score in & hundred years " Aud s0 tho batt!o ouded, ¥ to 1. Uuncle Dave, however, got in & bute for two cushions in the fifth, and although the R first man up, he got no furthor, for the Kan- sas Citys put up the samo perfect game until the last man was out.
