THEPEARL BUTTON INDUSTRY FLOURISHING Fremont and Lincoln Manufactarers Ing to Make a Very Creditable Showing of Their Goods at the Coming Expositio For the past three or four weeks Omaha has been tho scene of a hutly contested trade fight which is not yet settled. The success of the home patronago movoment inaugurated by Tre Bek roduced tho sales in Nobracka of all goods from distant states, Some east- ern manufacturers withdrew from this fleld ontirely, and othors accopted a reduction fn their business and smid nothing. The Min- nesota millers, who have drawn hundrods of thousands of dollars from Nebraska, were not ready to give up their hold without a fight and thoy selected Omaha as the batile- ground. Ono of their first moves was to send down a train load of flour to Omaha, with a great blast of trumpets, hoping 1n this way to at- tract the attention of consumers and win them back into the Minnesota fold. This did not have the desired result, however, as it only called the attention of the people to the enormous tribute that Omaha had beon pay- ing to Minneapolis, aud at a time, too, when | money was none to plenty in Omaba. The next move was to sent expert bakers arouna to the different grocery stores and give away warm biscuit wade from Minne- apolis flour. Although the grocers generally lent themselves to the scheme and did what they could to help Minueapolis, this pian, too, fell short of the mark. A prominent grocor said that he could not see that it had made a salo of a single saci of flour. The failuroe of these efforts participated the war. The Minuesota millers evidently came to the conclusion that the best way to kill off the Omaha and Nebraska miils would be to cut the price below the cost of production. They accoraingly dropped the price 20¢ per hundred and at the same tune put forth strong offorts to load up the rotail dealers. Omaha, and Nebraska wills that are selling in the ' city, promptly met the cut, but even this did not prevent the grocers from putting in heavy stocks of Minnesota flour. ‘The cut is still in force, and it is im- possible to say how much longer it will con- tinue, but itis safe tosay that Minnesota millers will not stop so long as they think there may be a chance of getting back their Omaba trade. They aim at nothing less than the closing up of the Omaha mill and the driving from this market of the other Ne- braska mills. As noted avove, the grocers are mavy of them on tbe side of Minneapolis, or at least indifferent to the good of Omaha, so that it remains entirely with the consumers to say hether Minneapolis shall be allowed to kill the manufacturing spirit in this city. So many of the grocerymen have loaded up with Minnesota flour that they will put it off onto every customer that does not demand some- thirg else. The action of 1he retail trade in this flour fight illustrates the folly of many mauufac- turers who aro spending & good deal of money to advertise their goods to the retail dealers. The averaze retail dealer appar- ently cares little where his goods come from 50 long as he can see a profit in \ham, aud money spent in trying to reach hm alone 1s money thrown away. The Nebraska manufacturers must reach the con- sumer. Eastern manufacturers learned this long ago. One of tho strango features of the flour war is, that while it is backed by the Minne- sota millers, it is engincered by Omaha job- bers. who are handling these Minnesota brands. In the vresent fight Omaha has not so much to lose as the state at largg, for there is only one mill in Omaha while there are several mills at different points in Nebraska which are dependent very largely upon their Omaha trade for support. These mills have peen seriously affected by the fight, ‘The grocerv jobbers have claimed that they werein favor of home industries, but they were forced to handle Minnesota flour because the people wanted it. Now that a good many people have learned that Nebras- ka flour is just as good, as well as cheaper, and are using it in preference to uny other, the grocery jobbers instead of handling what the people want are trying to drive Ne- braska flour out of the market by cutting the price of Minnesota below ihe cost of pro- duction. About the 1st of Iast November Tux Ber callod attention to the organization by Frank Kaspar of the Westarn Button Manufactur~ ing company. At that time only six men were employed in making pearl buttuns. M. E. Smith & Co., the dry goods jobbers, encouraged the starting of the factory by promising to handle its oatput. How well they have kept their word is shown by the fact that Mr. Kaspar is now employing soventeon button makers and has ordered machines, to arrive next week, which will necessitate the employment of eighteen adai- tional men. By the first of the month ho will have thirty-five men at work cutting buttons. In addition the factory furnishes work for a good many women and girls in sorting and sewing the buttons onto the card: This work is done outside of the fac- tory and enables those who bave a little SPAra time to use it profitably. Iho wages earned by the button makers averages about 812 per woek, but some of the workmen who are especially expert have earnod over £16 per woek. The Kilpatrick-Koch Dry Goods company is runuing a button factory that employs at the prosont time seven men. This gives & total of forty-two pearl button makers in Omaha. As it has been proven beyond question that peari buttons can be made in Omabha that are equal in every respect to the imported but- tons and at the same money, ther is overy prospect that the industry will continue {0 grow rapidly, Those who huve given the matter close attention prediot that with proper encouragement Omaha can so0n em- ploy a hundred button makers. The industry which was started by throe or four button makers on South Thirteenth streot promises to becomo one of the most important of Omaha's manufacturing indus- tries, and the credit for making it such will belong entirely to Omsha's two wholesale dry goods houses. Both factories will put machinory in the Coliseum building and manufacture buttons there durine the exposition in June. Fremont Will Exhibit, Secrotary Bradley of the Manufacturors association has roturned from a trip to Fre- mont, whero he went in the interest of the coming manufacturers’ exposition. He re ports that the mavufacturers there are all very enthusiastic over the movement 1o make au exhibiv of Nebraska mauufactured goods in Omaba. The Nobraska Binder Twine company will show the hemp plant growing and cured and the various stages of manufacture from the rough tow to the finished twine. They are considering the practicability of moving some of their machinery down in order to better illustrate the method of manufacture. The foundry and machine works wul probably exhibit Nebraska mado eugines. Godfrey & Meals have promised to mako an interesting exhibit of their hydraulic and well machwery. The Fremont Milling company will send down tho best looking baker in Fremont, who will make up thoir flour into biscuit, The Nebraska Creamery company will occupy un adjoining space and furnish butter to go witl the biscnit. Tho hungry visitors will do the rest. The Creamery Package Manufacturing company will have men at work making but- ter tubs, George 1. Wolz will show potato chips put upin packages of various sizes and styles. Ho will have fancy souvenir packages for distribution. E. T.
