When asked comcerning the attitude of the Burlington toward the project of recon- structing the Sixteenth street viaduct, Gen- eral Managor Holdrego said it was too early to say. He is of the opinion that the rail- roads did their full duty when they helped to pay for the present structure. He tniuks the roads cannot be forced by law to build a new viaduct, but heis willing to give the matter consideration. When plans are matured onough to learn tho size and cost of the proposed structure, and a statement made showing the amount to be assessed to oach railroad. Mr. Holdrege will give the mmtter careful cousideration. After he has reached a conclusion as to what the Burlington should do, it may have to pe taken up to the prosiadent and the board of directors. A disoase, treated ns such and perma- nontly cured. The Bostonian's Every Day With the Rarest of Comedy. Mr. H. C. Barnabee of the Bostonians and Mr. Jules Lumbard mot yesterday, tried tooutdo each other In narrating reminis- cences and new stories and then adjournoed to the Millard hotel billiard room to determ ino which was the greator artist with—the ciie, The delightful comoedinn was bubbling over with happy spirits, and the spectators wero ontortalned with a diverting by-play hiat was as unstudioa as it was amusing. A good shot was emphasized with a bit of #leeful clog dancing or the humming of a bar of music: a failure was followoed with a look of incredulous amazoment, and all the tima tho big bass singer was boing rallied about insisting on a four-ball game. It was merry, good natured banter, but ho of tho flowing locks won the game in spite of the (diver: tisoment, and then the two singers returned to pleasant reminiscences and convuising stories, Mr., Barnabeo told of coming to New York many years ago and hoaring Mr. Lumbard sing in Grace church choir, It was the first Kreat voice that the Bostonian had heard, and ho commented : ‘It was a gront mistake tnat Lumbard dia not take up a public career. With his mag- niticent voice and presence he could have made an endurivg nawe for himsolf,” “After all,” retorted the big Omahan, *isu't a success on tho stage, no matter how great, a failure! Look at your own case. You bave no home, no society; you are a r spectublo tramp, “'Ab, but there aro componsations. It 1s a bohemian lifo and has the spice of variety. As for friends, Thave thom all over thu coun- try. 1 can find as many in Omaba as in Bos- ton, and at St. Paul I saw almost as many {n the boxes. " Mention was made of Mrs. Smith, a mu- tual friend, who gave promise of a great career as a singer until marriago ended it. **Thero is an iilustration of tho unsatisfac- toriness of nprofessional careor, said Mr. Barnaboe in a sorious voice. “Mrs. Smith dropped out, there was a little ripple, and now she is forgotten. Aund that probably is the way it will be when the greatest come- dian on the American stage retires.” Tho last remark was rather indefinito until the spoaker threw back the lapels of his coat, thrust nis hands into his pockets and rollod his eyes upward with a mock sincerity thut was delicious in its finesso, The Bostoniars wauted Mr. Lumbard to sing “Sieoping Moggie,” and that sugzestod aonother story. Many years ago Mr. Barna- bee went out on a tour of thirty-nine nights, and at thirty-seven perfoimances the com- pany lost money. One of the party consoled the others by singing “‘Sleening Maggic every night. Their Hirst ongagement after ro- turning home was to sing at a funeral. They had appeared to such small audiences that Mr. Barnaboe unconsciously turned to tho soprano as thoy were gatbered aoout the coftin and asked : Do you think we will make expensesi” Tho drollery of the narrator was irresista- ble, and thus these two ola friends talked on for'an hourin & delightful spirit of com- radery, the player embellishing his poiuts with exquisite vomedy. Mr. Barnabeo is quite as diverting in pri- vatelife as on the staze, and hasa charm of manner that is very grateful. In speaking of his professional career he said laughingly that be had been siuging for 175 years. IF'rom tho subsequent couversation 1t appears that ho had sunzin a Boston church choir for twenty-four years and this is the fourteenth cason of tho Bostonians, He had had some oxperience on the stage, having firstappoared in “All1s not Gold that Glitters,” given as o benefit for R. . McLean, now leading man with Miss Maggio Mitchell. Afterwards ho supported Boston's idol, William Warren, in *‘Box and Cox. ‘The orgauization of the Boston Ideals, ho said, was the unpremeditated re- sult'of circumstances. *Pinafore” was tho rago fifteer; years ago, but had not received creditable production in Boston. A mews- vaper writer suggested that it ought to be given with an ideal cast and uamed the singers who afterwards were kunown as the Ideals. The sugeesiion was acted acted on and the company scored u great hit. They then took up tinitza” atd won another triumph. Miss Ober, who was managing a lecture bureau, saw an op- portunity 1o utilize this eroup of tocal mu- sicians, and secured them for short circuits throughNew England, the members returning 1o Boston every Saturaay for their church choir work and from that beginniug grew the permanent organization. Mrv. Burnabeo is in love with his work, enjoys excolient health, and will probably continue to enter- tain American audieuces for years to come.
