THE CONDITION OF TRADE, Jotbsrs Ganerally Repo-t Trada Flour'shing aad Better Than Expaoted. LOCAL RETAIL BUSINZSS NOT GOOD. The Scarcity of Cirs for Shipping Paralyzes the Local Geain Market Special Change in Country Protuce. The local retail trade in a general way 1s not good lhere are soms few exoceptions to the goneral rulo whera holiday goods have broughtin business but. the oxceptions are not numerous enough to blease busi ness men, It may be that tho mild weather contributes somewhat to the dullness. The jobbine trade is in just the opposite condition, Business is good, better oven than was anticipated. If overy branch of business in Omaha was in as flourishing a condition as the wholesale trade there could be no cause for fault finding. Considerable compiaiut is heard about poor collections both in the city and country. The grain trade of Owaha has boen par alyzed by the car famine, which is prevent ing tho movement of wrain. Dealers have been afraid to sell for dolivery, as the un- certainty of boing able to get cars in timo to fill contracts made the risk too great. How much longer this scarcity of cars is to sontinue 18 hard to say, but upiil the; shange for the better little can ke expected of the grain trade, In commenting on tho car situation, which 15 of the greatest importance in tno west, the New York Bulletin remarks that it is nat- ural for western roads to complain of eastern atout car movements, and vice versa, bocause the modes of borrowing cars in order to fa- cilitate the movement of through freight from the far west to the far eastaro such as nece sarily fuvolve great disadvuntages, some- times 1o one party and sometimes to the other. But the present caso differs entively from the chronic disputo which is due to standing causes, Obviously it is the 1mmediate effect of an uuusually lorge movement of grain, cattle and oz which has been so large that the railroads, though fully warned that the freight to b moved might bo unprecedented in quantity, hud not prepared for 1t. But behiud this is the state of facts which hins preveated tho ronds from making adequate preparation for any expansion of traftic that was likely to occur, It 1s not in the least a secret that the western ronds have for somo years past failed to enlarge their rolling stock and other facilities in proportion to their mileage or to their trafffe. In 1587 thero were trans- ported 61,561,000,000 tons of freight one mile, but in 1500 79,193,000,000 and this year the increase has been'phenomenal. 1n the three previous years it was nearly 3) per cent, and it has probably risen more than 10 per cent this year, or to87,000,000,000 ton miles, But the number of freight cars on all the roads in the country was 930,587 1n 1857, und only 1,061,970 in 18%), au incresse of 111,000, or 11 per cent, instead of an increase of "30' per cent in tonnage transported. ‘Phere was wise economy in avoiding tho purchase of new cars when they were not likely to be needed. But when new territorics wero rapidly se Uing, admitted as states, and traverséd by thousands of miles of railroad just comploted, it was as certain as any future ovent could be that the railronds between those states aud the seabonrd would have much more freight to carey. It was Just at this period that tho enlargement of rolling stock stopped. During tho year 185) it gained only 10,000 in number of cars m tho whole country, and muck of this was in the east and south, Svery other line of business is of course affected by this scarcity of cars. One of those suffering most_seriously is tho coal trado. Inanumber of western states there 4s danger of a conl famine, and in Chicago the situation threatens to become serious, Largo factories und the railroads are alreaay consuming nearly ull the coal in sizht, and small dealers are at their wits' ond to sup- ply their customers, It is certainly o curi- ous situation where unexampled prosperity rauses stagnation in trade and threatens serious discomfort and loss even to those ‘who are most fortunate. ‘The produce markets of Omaha have been dull for the past six days. Pricos bhave shown some lfttle fluctuations, but nothing of any great importance has developed in the trade. OMAHA LIV STOUK MARKET. OMAHA. Dec.
