A suit was commenced in the district court yesterday that is likely to arouse some iner- st in the public and to cause some trouble to the unfortunate gontiemen who are made de- fendants, The United States publishing house of Chicago is the plaiutiff in the case and Alfred Egholm, Frank R. Levine and C. A. Becbe are made defendants. The trouble dates back 1o a year ago the coming Septem- ber, when a coutract was entered into by Egholm with the publishing house, by tho terms of which he was toact us exciusive agent over fourteen counties in fowa, in the interests of ‘the “Gaskell Literary club,? In order to get the territory re- forred to e had to give his note tor 2,300, and as tho tote was of no account he got his friends, Beebe and Levin, to go his security. They had both known Exhoim for some time, and as they had not the slightest idea they would ever have to pay the notes they drew up and signed a letter of credit, in which th stated thut they had known E eral years and had the fullest confidence in his ability and integrity. ‘They suthorized the company to give him any books, memberships and certificates in the Gaskell literary club he might want, and they would protect the com- puny in whatever credit they might give him. Taey also bound themselyes and thei ussigns to remit the full amountof Kgholm's bill provided he failed to do so. The letter, in short, was a virtual surrender to Egholn of their respective pocketbooks with all th contents, holm di and in the tholm for sev appeared several months ago, cautime notes vecame due to the amount of #1400, The notes were presented to Levin aud Beebe, but neither would set- tle, thinking that perhaps Egholm might turn up and make the matter right. About three months ago Egholm died, and conse- bis co-defendants have no hope of tting rid of their obligation. Of Doubtful Mutual Beneflt. “The recent attempt to work up the **Mutual One Year Beacfit Order” in Council Blufts has left many here in doubtas to the real nature of the plan. The Chicago Tribune re- cently published an article from a Boston correspondent declaring that “of the fifty or more benstit and endowment cormpanies now turning attention to the residents of western cities, the Mutual One Year Benefit order has cut & wide swarth through the gullible masses.” He then proceoded to show that those who nave invested must pay during the next six months §200 for every $100 tuey may be lucky enough 1o win, or else drop cut. The claim is made that July 1 the order had cash on hand to the amount of $214,000, and was awing on matured certificates §44,000, aua be- fore December 31 it must pay out $U50,10¢— ull of which must come from the present cer- tificate holders, for the numbver of new mem- ‘urs is practically nothing. The month be- fore the expose in the legislature there were 2,210 new members secured. The fol- lowing month, June, showed ouly 249, and tha growth has practically stopped. From this reasoning the Iribune’s correspondent reaches the conclusion that the $930,190 held the company must pay before the end of the year must care for the 14,000 members. Those who drop out or receive their money from month to month are not liable for the certificates that come aftor theirs, so 1t is reasoned that those who hold cortificates in December next will have to pay §2 for every §1 they can hope to with- draw from the treasury and and thatif it exists for six moatns of next year there will be, ut the present rate, only 2,500 members to meet obligations of $506,000.
