The American ambassadors, Benja- min Franklin and Silas Deane, were re- ceived by King Louis XIV., of France, and his queen 111 yours ago last March 22, The following day the Russian count Tschernscheft found on the top step of the entrance to the royal palace in Versailles n letter from M. de Suj tines and signed by Mme. de Lam Tschernschefl took the-ylett with him, read it, and s Q, to his sovereign, Kath#rine {I. of Rus- sia. The last number of the Revue Nouvelle contains the following letter, Mme. de Lamballe wrote thus: “This morning | was at the queen’s levee, which, on account of the pres- ence of the American ambassadors, was trightfully long. Ihave such a head- ache that I would not write did T know how anxious you are to know how we liked the gentlémen from America. Well, so so, la_la. You have tho Couniess Jule and me to thank for even this much. It cost us no litlle trouble to get the queen into the mood to hear them. Unfortunately Mme. Bertin had been with her, and you lknow unfavorable to the interests of the modistes the war with England Mme. Bertin had poked so much fun at the American ambassadors that when they entered she could hardly preserve ner dignity and a straight face. And I do not wonder much at it. They iv fact, wretchedly dresse nothing distinguished about them. We described to the queen in vain the sim- plicity of the costumes of these people and their prejudice against all forms. ‘Say what you will,” answered the queen, ‘they do look somewhat like canaille.” We laughed at this and she regained her good humor, which she had lost on account of these barbarians, But I beg of you spare our decorum and send us your clown when they come again, so that we may not break down enticely, The Countess Jule and I promise you to do our best to cure the queen of her prejudice.” After copying Mme. de Lamballe’s letter Tschernschefl returned it anony mously to M. de Sartines, who was so provoked by its loss and by the myster- jousness of its reappearance that he offered the police a reward of 10,000 francs for the discovery of the find His curiosity was never satisfied, Tschernschefi’s sovereign wus so pleased with his cleverness in handling the letter that she sent him her picture and o $2,000 snuffbox. In her next letter to him she intimated that Marie A ette seemed 1o be doing a gr laughing, and that ‘“she laughed best who laughed last.” Dr, Benjamin Diliard, druggist, at Aurora, Mo., says: Fsell & great quantity of S, for scrofula, eczema, rheumatism and other blood troubles, and’ have never heard of a case of failure to cure. Editor Singerly's Beautifal Yac YThe RNestless is attracting so much attention at presentthat a little gossip ubout her will not be out of place,” said one of Mr, Singerly’s friends to a Philadelphia Press man. **You know its a marvel of comfort und luxury. ‘T'he staterooms have folding berths and & bath-tub areangement, which makes seabath possible in your own stateroom. All the woodwork, even the sky and deckliouses, isof mahogany, except the quarters of the officers and men, which ave finished in ash, The ceilings of cabins, saloon, dining room, ete., of lincrusts wulton, and the upholstery work in purple velvet. My private signal is a r flag, with a large IR of white on this ground, Cleveland made several trips on the Restless during his presid with Editor Singerly and a few fiie But this is the first time on known record (no joke intended, I assure you) when a democrati ee-trader of such pronounced beliefs hag taken a repub- ican tariff president a yachting.” Advice to Mothera, Mrs. Winslow's Soothing should always be nsed for ehildren tec ing. Daniel Sprig 1s a middle aged colored man who used to be Gen. Garfield’s body servant when he was in congress and wont to Mentor with the president- olect, and returned with him to the white house in 1881 to be his body ser- vant there. He likes to sit on the bench on the gouth side of tho white house theso sunny Sundays, says & Washington lot- tor t0 the New York Dress, and tel] about the death of his old master. He likes to tell about it because he has never seen it in print. One fact in con- nection with the death of Garfleld, in- deed, has nover been printed. When it was decided to move the vietim of Giteau to the sea shore Dan went to Elbernon with the party. He wasas very useful member of tho family and had to be taken along. It was not expected by the physiciang that the death of the president would come so suddenly., For an hour or two during his last day they sat on the piazza of the cottage looking out ovor the Atlantic and lnh\'ingnlmut the news of the day, Daniel Sprig had been left alone at the bedside of the sick man. Mrs. Garfield was up stairs, Daniel grew tived of his lonely vigil and stepped out upon the piazza himself to take an airing for a few minutes and relieve himself of the monotony of the bed chamber. It soemed to him as it id to the physicians, that the prosi- dent was in no immediate danger. Daniel staid out of the room probably half un hour, but near enough so that he could be called upon in case of the slightest disturbance inside. ‘When he went back to the room ho did not at first notice that the face of the sick man was changed in _any way; then he thought it looked white. Upon a closer examination he was sure of it. He put his hand over the heart of his master. It had stopped beating. In the wildest alarm he rushed not out upoh the piazza to the physicians, but up- stnits to Mrs. Garfield. She hurried down in yet more terrible alarm. She dispatohed Dan at onte to the veranda to bring the doctors in. They had been sitting there thoughtlessly and wero the more frightened on that account. They rushed in. The president was indeed dead. Not only had his heart stopped beating, but his face was that of a corpse in a coffin. What added to their terror was the fact that the presi- dent had died while they were absent and without their knowledge, They had no means by which they could be sure or determine how long he had been dead when they discovered him. The matter was hushed up. Nothing was ever permitted to escape that immedi- ate circle about it and the world neyver kuew that the death of the martyrved president was ever marred by any such incident. Daniel Sprig tells this story now and theu with every circumstance put in. He is still a useful employe at the white house. Ho blacks boots, and, until General Harrison brought on a colored servant with him from Indianapolis, at- tended to the personal wants of the president, Everybody.who knows him says that he is veracious and believes his story about the death of Garfield. ——— It is a Curious Fact That the body is now more susceptible to benefit from medicine than at and other season. J. H. Kekhardt and S. B. Donehain of this city, says a Hartford dispateh to the New York Sun, sailed for Europe last week [rom New York on a most re- markable matrimonial pilgrimage. The parents of Mr. Donchain were Ameri- cans, but he was raised in the public schools here. Karly in life he started in the jewelry and ornament trade, and after obtnining a competency he was most anxious to secure a helpmate. He was two exacting, and of all the beau- ties the state offered none met his We One day he learned from an Knglisi paper that there was in Constantingie a female seminary, from which selec: tions of a wife may be made upon the recommendation of the officers in charge of the institution. If acceptable, the applicant deposits a suitable sum, in proportion to the bride’s beauty and attainments, as compensation to her parents for thaloss of the daughter’s society and services, upon which the happy bride is handed over to her pur- chaser, with whom she usually agrees by means of true Oriental persuasion. This system of wife purchase seemed to please My. Donchain, and to his friend, Mr. J, H. I ardt, he confided his intention to try his luck there. The latter thought the plan a good one, and it determined to start at once. The pair made all arrangements to be ab- sent some time, and sailed in the early part of the week. kn route to Turkey they will take in the Paris exposition and visit Vienna, Florence, Rome and Naples, veaching their destination in July. The bride will be purchased as quickly as possible, and after a suitable leave taking of the old folks, if they can be found this side of Circassia, the happy pair will enjoy their honeymoon upon the Black and Mediterrancan s, after which the return to America will be begun, They will be back by September, and the friends of the groom promise the pair arousing re- ception, which will be added to by the intense curiosity here w0 sec the Turkish beauty. He had seen a statement” that General La- throp had some doubts whether the oul appuratus, which was to be placed in the three state prisons to ex ceute murderers, would destroy life stantaneously, If General T.athrop would guarantee that his (the writer's) tamily should be paid 3,000 in case of his death, he would submit himsell to a trinl with the electrical machine.
