That was an indi- vidual named Lewis, who used insulting and profanc langnage when asked by the ofticers to step back and make room for the passuge of the parade. The W. C. A. ladies have arranged for furnishing m and lodgings in the Mer- riam block during the tournament. Three meals will be served daily at 35 cents each. Ice cream, strawberries, cake, etc. Cots will be provided for lodgers. The preceeds are for the benefit of the hospital. It is very earnestly suggested that it would be a judicious thing to turn on the current in the electric tower lights during the re- mainder of the tournament, notwithstanding the ract that it is moonlight and the contract ‘with the city does not cail for it. THE RUNS WITH THE “MASHEENS" An Attempted Abduction—A Two- Headed Cario—The Water Works Re-election—Personals and Brieflets, - The second day of the annual tournament of the lowa State Firemen's assoviation opened with a cloudless sky and the manage- ment rejoiced thereat, as the success of the undertaking depended alone upon favorable weather, It was estimated that there wereabout five thousand visitors in the city, Tuesday even- ing, and the first incoming trains, yester- day, brought car load atter car load to swell the number. Special trains arrived from all parts of the state, over all the roads, and, by noon there were at the least calulation, fifteen thousand strangers in the Bluffs, who had come to attend the tournament. The strects, parks and every available point was alive with humanity, while, at an early hour, the sightseers began to take pos- session of windo doorways, housetops and every other accessible place which com- manded o view of any portion of the line of march, The line began to form shortly after 0 o'clock, and, for an hour and a half, ail was confusion along South Eighth street and the abutting avenues, on which the various di- visions were forming, Assistant marshals and aides dashed up and down, gradually forming the dozens of companies into march- ing order. It w about 10:80 when the line finully formed, and the march commenced. The purade was nearly a mile and a long, aud was three-quartors of an hour pass- ing a given point. Conservative estimutes place the number of men in line at nearly three thousand, while others run as high as 000. The police kept the streets open and no difficulty was experi- enced in passin It is estimated that fuily 50,000 people viewed the parade. The spec- tacle was a grand one, in fact tie finest that has ever been seen in Council Bluffs, The companies participiting were finely uniformed, the arili corps, especially, attract- ing a great deul of attention by their rich uniforms and pi sion of movement, The bands in line furnished an abundance of choice music, and will give an excellent contest for the £100 prize. The members of the delegations from Marshalltown and Logan visited through the new Bk building yesterday afternoon, AT THE PARK, The afternoon programme was carried out at tae driving park. The crowd began to assemble there shortly after | o'clock, and by half past two there were between 6,000 und 8,0 00people on the grounds. Both the large amphitheaters were filled, and a stretch twenty feet wide, on the side of tho track, was packed with'a dense mass of humanity, and all that was visible was a sea of faces, ‘A line of carriages, four and five deep, lined the quarter stretch for a distance of over a quarter of & wile. Although one of the largest crowds thut hus assembled on these grounds for several years, it was one of the quietest and best behaved. There were no isturbances that called for the attention of the police, and the murshals had no dificulty in keeping the tracks clear, The first event of the park was the trial of steamers, A $100 prize was offered for best time, and a sumilar purse and state trumpet for distance. There were two entries, the Abrens steamer Rescue of the Counail Bluffs departinent, and steamer 1 of Avoca. The former got water in 8:531f and threw 24ild feet, Avoca got water in 7:453 and throw 242 feet. The Rescue was wwarded both prizes. The latter steamer burst the hose just before shutting off stream, but for- tunutely not until after the trial was prac- tically over. It was conceded that the Ites- cue would win on time, but it was supposed that Avoca would get the bust stream. It was a pleasiug vietory for Council Bluffs, The second event on the programme wes the free-for-all Nebraska hose race, First prize, $125; second, §75. There were but two starters, the J, M. llluruwun of Omaha, and the G. Kraufers, of Kearney. Tne Thurs- tons took the first spin down the track. They made a fine run in about 0:40, but the coupler failed to run through, and the pipe- man made the coupling alone. It wus a dis- couraging finish, Time, 64 seconds. The Kramers bad a snup before thew, but they did not take advautage of it, but gave a lively exhibition, making the run and ,coup- ling in 46 seconds. This cave them the race and the $125 purse, The Thurstons, the crack tewm of Nebraska, owed their solely Lo the poor work of thew coup ‘I'he third feature was the o of the 0:4) cluss. It was on account of the strong head wine The second was the Jacobson team, of Lyons. They made the run and coupling in 461¢. Tt was a very good exhibition and the Bluftes felt dubjous until the time was an- nounced. The third team to fyce the line was the Denisons, of Mason City. They made a hard run, but the coupling was slow, and they were given time as 46}, The fourth was the Whitney team, of At- lantic. They started out well and were loudly upplauded as they came down tho track, but the pace was set too fast, and they could not keep it up. They made a good coupling, aud were given time m 47 seconds, The Eiseman team was the fifth to make the trial. They got through in 40 Their time was something of a disappointment, s it was expected that they would make it bet- tor than 47, although it was conceded they were no match for the Rescues. The Chapins, of Union, the state champion tenm was the sixth to try to bite a 8lice out of the purse offered: They were not satis- fied with a single chow, but they wanted the whole pie. They made it in 44}, amid the wildest applause. The Manning team made the seventh spin. They made a very poor run, but the fastest and neatest coupling of the day., Their time was 4615 The A)\nr(h of Eldora, then tried it on. Their work highly pleased “the spectators, and vociferous applause was awarded them. It was the ouiy hook and ladder race of the day. The ladder climbing was the feature that captured the spectators, and the nimble work of the clhimber was worthy of applause. ‘The last thing on the programme was tie trial of hund engines. frivat prize, on time, % second, §100; third, $50. Prizes on distance same, With the addition of a state broom, for first pluce. ~ There were but two eutrics —the Resolute, Eugine company, of Lyons, and Storm Luke Engine company, No. 1. The first trial was for distance, and the result was as follows: Resolute, 198 feet; Storm Lake, 225 feet. Storm Lake was awarded first money.
