The express messenger, armed with a heavy poker, came to the res- cue and pounded the brute until he retreated to the other end of the car, and a barricade of trunks was quickly thrown up to keep him there, thus possibly saving the life of Me- Carl.’ Had not the dog been muzzled, the injuries sustained by the intrepid baggage- man would doubtless have been very scrious, even if he'had not been killed outright, —————— A Cyclone Victim, A call for the patrol was rung in from the Rock Island passengoer depot at 2 o'clock yes- terday afternoon, On arriving there a woman of about fifty-five years was found, who gave her nawe as Eliza Watson, She was in a pitiable condition mentally, having had an experience in a cyclone that had unseated her reason. 1t scems that she was at Chilli- cothe, O, during the terriblo cyclone that visited that place a fow months ago, and was blown ly two miles, being found aftor the storm had subsided lodged against a treo that had withstood the onslaught of the ele.
