Subject, ‘‘Christ’s Ownership of Souls.” Evenlng subject, “Gather Up the Fragments.” James Lindecy was before Justloe Fralney yesterday on a chaage of threat- ening Slater, who has charge of the drly- ing park, He was placed under $50 bonde. At the meeting of the clty council last ulght a levy of one mill was made for the Improvement of the city park, All other important business went over until next Monday night. The Fero cases stlll prove a drawing card at Justice Shurz court, and the room was packed yesterday. It is report- od that at the concluslon of these cases the Fero brothers will quit thelr posi- tlons here. The clty council was to have met as a committee of the whole yesterday after- noon, to consult with cltlzens about the proposed change of grade of Harrison and other streets- The councilmen did not materialize, however, and the matter got no attentlon, The reducing of the fire department went into effect at 12 o’clock last night, Ohlef Walters sitting up to lasue the orders. A. B. Howe rotires from the foremanship of No. 1, and J. W, Rapelje as foreman of No. 4, It was expected that Judge Loofbou- row would be here yesterday to hear the motion for a new trlal in the Cuff John. #on case, but he sent word that the a journment of the term of court as made by the clerk last Monday would have to atand, this adjournment being till the Decomber term, the olerk not recelving the later advlce, sent by telegraph, in time to act upon it. Ohrlstian Anderson is anything but a christlan, He was arrested for cruelty to his wife, who It seems washes to help support the family. Her husband col- lected about $3 due her for work and went on a spree, which he closed up by golng home and beating the woman physlcally, even worse than he had beat- en her financlally. He wrenched her arm 8o badly that a physiclan had to be called In, and she will be unable to use 1t for some time to ccme, The bratal husband was sent to jall for ten days, There are whisperings that some of the work and some of the materlal being used In the constructlon of the city jail {s not according to the speclfications, One feature o} these reports s in regard to the number of water-closets, but this {s explained by the statement that the plans were necessarily changed In this re. gard, There are other reports as to the materlal for the roof and the cornlces not belng as called for in the plans and speci- ficatlons, and these will be looked Into also by the suthoritles. The board is de termined there shall be no cause for com- plaint or censure, At the fire Thursday night a disgrace- ful row took place between members of the fire department, the words used be- Ing aa hot as the flames they were fight- log, and even blows belng given, The boys did good work in putting ont |the fire, and stopped what threatened to be an extensive blaze, so the quarrel dld not scem to lessen the efficloncy of the de- partment on this special ocoaslon P haps the boys work better when they are mad, but It eccrs that thay ought to be 80 organlzad esto do away with the necemlty of their fightiug among them- eelvos at such times, The excuse glven for the uvplearantness was that one of the department had a little 100 much fighting whisky on board, Just how much this betters the matter is s ques- tlon respectfully reforred to (Le temper- ance alllanco, Substantlal a! estate losns, J, W, 101 Pearl street, od resl and E. The Penitentiary Seems Yawning For Him, Fuarther Orookedness Discovered, The career of R. 1. Skiles, who was In the boot and shoe business on Maln street, now promises to end inglorlously, Skiles is stlll In jall in Omahs, and It Is sald that his hopes of having the charge of forgery dropped have fallen through. It sooms that before engaging In busine here he was an agent for the Iowa Nebraska Insurance company, and that he forged his father-in-law's name to a bond. It was expeoted by him that his father-in- law would appear to testifiy, and the case would be dropped, but It appears that his father-In-law holds himself ready to testify agalnst him at any time, and it Is reported that In view of thls fact, Sk has concluded to plead gullty and beg for mercy. The penitentlary seems to be walting for him, Yesterday T. N, Bray was over from Omaha to replevin the stock of goods which had been seized by Flickinger Bros. on’a chattle mortgage. It appears that by a written contract Skiles was to run the shoe store here for Bray, the latter ownlng the stock, When Skiles gotinto trouble here he borrowed some money and gave a_chattle mortgage for $200 in favor of Flickinger Bros. Itis clalmed that Skiles showed Mr. Flickin- ger a blll of sale by which it appeared that Bray had sold to Skiles the entire stock, and and recelved the pay therefore. Bray Insists this was a forgery, as he never gave any such bill of sale, and Sklles now denies that he ever showed Flickinger any such docu- ment, but In view of Skiles’ record, it seems probable that in order to secure a loan he forged Bray’s name to the doc- ument, and after getting the loan on the stock, destroyed the paper. Under the contract between Skiles and Bray, the former was to make a woekly accounting to Bray of sales and expenses. Since Skiles has shown up so poorly, the stock has been invoiced, and it seems that there has been quite a shortage not accounted for. It is apparent therefore, that Sklles has been playlng sharp in more ways than one. One of the worst features of Skiles' conduct is his pretentions to plety, by which he has duped good church ~men, not only out of thelr money, but thelr confidence, It seems that while he was talking 8o plously, and making such pre- tentions, he was winning among certatn classes great notoriety for his lascivious. ness. Some of the goods now short sald to have been used In payment of ille- gltimate bills contracted fn his dlssl, tion, and there s no knowing how many palrs of shoes from that stuck are now belng worn out by feet which ‘‘go down to death,” It Is reported that some tlme ago he attempted to eatlsfy the ten dollar of one of these women by glving her a seven dollar palr of shoes, but that the woman appearing at the store and making so nolsy a demand for the balsnce /n cash, thathe had to call on the police for protection. Then came the girl with her demand for reperation for dlnfied sedaction, and it cost $75 to settle that. Snmn:{| such troubles all polnt to Skiles as being a rank hypocrite, who under the gulse of plety, has been duping many victims, It 15 sald that Gen, Howard, of Omaha, whose blg, chriatian heart, was moved to sympathy by the plous appeals of the young man, the son of an honored, old army frlend, will lose quite heavily for belleving In Skiles’ pretensions and promises, he is sald to have vouched for teed Mr, Bray and id to have got W. §. Homer to go on two notes of 850 each at one time, when M. E, Smith & Company at- tached the atock on an old claim, 8kiles beg'fng 80 plteously and being introduced to the oltizens here as a protege of prom- inent and respected men. Skllés’ recklessness {s shown by num- 3 , for Instance, bought a $26 baby wagon of L. O, Brockett, and sacured 1t on credlt. The debt was secured by Gen. Howard, and Sklles took 1t over to Omaha, where it was Immedlately selzed upon by some of his creditors there, Skiles and his wife have separated, she refusing to llve with him longer. One of his children, a bright llttle girl, aged about four yer bora to him by his firat wife, who Is now dead, has been on thls sldo of the river, he having left her with a famlly on First avenue, It has been pltlable to hear the litile one asking about her father, and when he would come back. The little one’s grandfather has now sent for her, and proposes glving her a home, TO0 MUCH IN A HURRY, An Omabha Woman Overanxious to Become a Mother-in-Law, Yesterday & woman, accompanied by a young man and two girls, appeared at the county clerk’s office and asked for a marrlage lcense for her daughter and the young man. The application was filled out, glving the name of the young man as Abraham Davls and his age as 26, and the girl's neme as Caroline Connors, and thelr resldence as Omaba, Inquiry to the girl's age revealed the fact that she was only 13, and the clerk very promptly and rightly refused to grant the necessary permit, An hour or &0 later, an old man named Adams, who lives here, appeared at the clerk’s office sud applied for a license agaln, glving the name of theyoung man as Rose, and that of the girl as Murphy, ssylng that the girl's mother wanted him to get the license, He did not seem to know very mach about either of the partles, and appeared as & messenger sent by the sme woman who had attempted to get s license just before, It looked as if ske was planning to got a licente anyway without any regard to the names, the old man who made the second application eay- log that he did not know exsctly the age of the girl but that her mother had told him she was between thirteen and fit- teen. It Is needless to eay the license was not had, and the mother who snxlous to marey off her bables will have to try agaln. There is evidently some interesting histcry back of the affalr, as the deslre of a resl mother to get so young a daughter marriea is strange. ——— A Quiet Wedding, On Wednesday of las: week a wedding occurred at Osceols, in this state, which Interests many Councll Blaffs people, the bridegroom being Mz, C.
