He will address the children at the home ot the frlendless at 3 o’clock p. m,, situated at No., 714 Avenue D. Parents and children not connected with the home are lnvited to attend, Since the refusal of the county to ac- cept the bridge lately bullt at Seventh street, the city has pat up fences to pre- vent the bridge belng used. The fences were torn down yesterday, and James Smith, one of the former proprietors of the Revere house, was complained of as belng the off:nder. He says they have got the wrong man, and proposes to prove go next Monday. George Woollver, the contractor who was lately injured by being thrown from & wagon and run over, Is to sue the clty for $1,000 dameges, In driving through an slley between Third and Fourth streets, and between Elghth and Ninth avenues, the approash was not properly filled, and the jolt caused him to fall off, the wheels passlog over him, breaking soveral ribs, The Nonparell denounces the practice of honorable newepapers In glving credit to articles ollppel from other papers, The old grandmother got enough life into her yesterday to really get a llttle vexed and declare it to be ‘‘a beastly hablt of giving credit to newspaper clip- pings.”” The old lady cannot be accused of indulging In this ‘‘beastly” habit, al- though her serap-book 1s mainly filled up with clippings, Four empty whisky flasks were found in the cells at the olty jail yesterdey, showlog that even iron bars do not pro- hibit, 1t seems that flasks aro frequently passed in throngh the windows by out- side frlende, and the priconers have a jolly time occaslonally In prolorglog their sprees after baving fallen into the clatches of the law. There should be a fence built about the jail building or some other praetlcal steps taken to en force prohibition, at least in the jail, Miles Mullan, who was arrested at Pa- cific Junctlon for steallng a horse belong- ing to 0. R, Mitchell, yestorday had his examination before Juetice Fralne, Willlam Foreest Patton appearei for the state, and J. 0. Rhedslack for the de- fense, Th> casa was closely and eharply fouzht, inch by ineh, but the court decld- od to Lcld tle secuzed to the gra~d jury In the sum of $7,000. Belng unable to give ball, Mullen want to jall. A change has been made in the firm of Leaman & Beebe. A few days ago Mr. Leaman bonght Mr. Beebe's iuterest and now J. R, Snyder, the Broadway grocer, goes Into the commission business with N. E. Leaman under the firm name of Snyder & Leaman at the old stand No. 14 Pearl street. The new firm are “‘rustlera” and are golng to extend thelr business and hereafter deal In everything in the commission business, Mr. Snyder 1s golng out of the grocery buslness so he oau glve his whole attention to his new businers. A wonderfual cure has been performed by Dr. Towns, of Fond da Lac, Wis. Mrs. Harrls, of Clinton, lows, called on the doctor for treatment of cancer of the tonguge, which had eaten one.quarter of it off, Townsat once administered his remedy, drawing It out In a few hours, and healing it In three weeks, Sheis not lacking for tongne now and ls wusing it In glowing terms In thedoctor's pralse. Dr. Towns is stopping at the FPaclfic house until Wednesday mornlng, the 18th Inst, He will then Jeave for Sieux Olty, where he will remain for saven days. Dr. Towns only treats such cases as are abandoned by other physiclans, It costs you nothing to step Into his office and talk with him. Office hours, 9 a. m, to Y p.m. The olty fathers who are wrestling with the problem of how to meet $60,000 of expenses with $20,000 of recelpts should go to the home of the friendless and get some lessons in financlering. From the reports of the home as pub- lished it appears that the receipts are from forty to fifty dollars a week, and yet out of this amount forty odd persons are being clothed, fed and lodged; there are repalrs to be kept up, payments to be made on property purchased some time ago, old debts to be whittled down, and the running expenses met of publishing a paper clalming 1,600 clrculation. To cap the climax the management avows its pollcy to be not to get In debt but to make the expenses conform with the re- celpts. Just how It can be done s a puzzle, and a solving of the mystery might be a clue to the remedy of the city's troubles, I1f the home can get along with less than a dollar a week for table board, lodglng, washing, etc., there must be blg money In boarding houses. — — Pruy NOIL BLUFFS July 2, 1 Notlce Is hereby glven that the New York Plumbing company will open for busliness next Monday July Gth.
