Adsms, halling from Omaha, was fined In the police court yesterday for being drunk, Pormit to wed was yesterday given to Ernest Foderch and El'zabeth Morgal, both of this clty. The glrls of St. Francls academy had a plenle yesterday, one of the glens being the place chosen. Honey creek seoms to be the place that now attracts the ““lone fisherman,” a8 both bites and fish are plentiful there, The Harmony mission folks held a pleasant social last evening at the resi- dence of C. E. Dawson on Franklin ntroet. Relter Is offering great bargains at hi merchant tallorlng establishment, No. 810 Broadway. Ses hls [goods and get his prices. Mr. Guilfeather, who recently gota $300 verdlct agalnst the city, now offers to take half that amount rather than liti- gate further, ‘While Oharles Zacharias and family were away from thelr home on Plerce strect, yesterday morning, thieves went through the house, securing about $20 in money and some clothing, No clae. D, C. Bloomer, who is made a party to one of the injunction sults brought by the prchibltionists, Is not the owner of the building cccupied as a saloon, but ls slmply the agent collecting the rent. Supervisors Kirkwood aud Frum have been chosen to represent this county at the meeting of the state board of equal- ization, and to see that Pottawattamie county has only lts share of the burden. The councll will this morning examine in a body the property cf Mrs, Norton, which it Is claimed has been damaged by tho new sewer ditch, and for whicha olalm has been presented agalnst the clty for $550. The county board of supervisors have granted permits to sell llquor for culinary, medicinal and mechanloal pur- poses to several persons, among them being Conrad Geise, Schnelder & Beck, John Linder, and L. Kirscht. The clty has an offer for $25,000 of In- tersection paving bonds, at psr and acorued Interest, less five per cent. com- missicn. The offer has been referred to the finance commlttee with power to act. The offer will probably be accepted. Harry Curtis, the secretary of the young men's ch.lstian association, had better hurry home, With the president fined for larceny, and the slgn at the en- trance cf the rooms demolished, it seems there was a determined effort to smash up the instltution, The chief of pollice was complained to yesterdsy that a man named Knepper, livicg on lower Washington avenue, had been cruelly beating his s'ster's child, a glrl about eight years of sge. The child bore no evidences of being abused, and the chlef made no arrests. Tickets for the firemen's tournament are to be placed on eale by J. L. De- Bevoise, the unlon ticket agent. No. 5056 Broadway, from the 8th to the 12th, good to reture till the 16th. JA platform for danclng 1s to bs bullt, and various booths set up, snd there will be plenty to amuse and entertaln. In the case agalnst Sackett & Preston, who were charged with ueiog some other man's brand on some flour racks, the de- fendauts did not have to introduce any evidence, the proseculing attorney, after all the evidence for the state had been heard, asking the judge {o instract the jury to brivg in a verdlct for the defense, walch was done, The Graves musioa) family, which has been playiog for the dlme museum, is to glve a concert for the bencfit of the African church, the date being the 16th, but the p'ace not yet declded vpon, The chureh is struggling with a debt, and as the membership is small end not wealthy the struggle s a hard one, and It ls hoped that the concert will help out. The commencement excreices of the institution for the deaf and dumb will be held next Wednesdey, The graduating class consists f Mi E, Blanchard Wil- Uaws, of Moravis; Miss Libble Kinkead, of Obarlton; Miss Addle Morrieon, of Floyd; G, L. Crosby, of Cedar Falls; Loranie Tiacy, of Richland; Ellsworth Long, of Kazsas; J. G, Jackson, of Cen- troville. Yesterday the dellvery team cf Bell & Hall took a run on Breadwsy, and In com'ng to a stop near the front of the store there was a collision with Mullis' boree and wagon, starting another run- away, acd the Mullis horse In hls wild carcer strucke tho deliviry wagon of B B, Gardoer, ard a third runaway resulted. Brcadway was alive for a few minutes with flyiog horsos and carcening wagons, but cut of all the commo'icn there was o very serlous damage done, and no one Injared. A party of ladles and gontlemen, con. slating of Mr. and Mrs. J, O. Bennett, Mr. and Mre. E. R, Fonda, Mr, and Mrs. Charles E. Taylor, and Mr., and Mrs. W. A. R. M. Highsmith, Jeft early on Thursday morning in a carry-all on & fishing excursion for Hanthorn's Jake. Aftor a jolly good time spent at the lake thoy returned home late Thursday even- Ing. A stranger, enroute from Kansas to ho eastern part of the state, stopped over last night at Mrs. Durgan’s board- ing house, and yesterday morning he olafmed that some ome had stolen his revolver from his room, but just as he waa about to take the train to leave the clty, the revolver was found, In the window of the room, where the fellow had left It, he having forgotten where he bad lald it Tho olty is not getting half the benefit of the paving on Maln «#nd Broadway, because of the lack ot all arrangements for keeping the streots clean, It s a matter which ought to be taken In hand at once. In Omaha the dirt is kept scraped and swept up, so that when s dash cf rain comes what little remalna is washed off, leaving the sireets all the cleaner, while here the dirt accumulates 80 that the raln makes eeveral inches of mud. There is blg room for reform. About fifty cltizens of Oakland have eigned » remonstrance and preecnted it to the county board, objecting to the board granting a permit for C. F. Jacob- son to sell liquors for medlelnal and vther purposes. These cit'zens say In their re- monstranca that Jacobson has been run- ning a saloon In violation of law, and they think if granted a permit he will not comply with the law regulating the sale of llquors under {t. As no petition has been preeented from Jacobson, asking fora permit, the board referred the re- menstrance baok until such tlme as each petitlon should be presented. There ls quite a joke on the clty coun- oll. Itlsdiscovered that that tne meet- held Thursdsy afternoon was not a legal meeting of the council, the records show- ing that the council had adjourned the day before without date, o that nothing bat a special meeting, called by the may- or for some speclfic purpose, can be held until the first Morday in July. The councll was to meetas a committee of the whole Thuraday afternoon, and that on- ly, but after they got togetherthey some- way got the idea that it was a couneil meeting, and so went ahead, and among other} buslness they ordered about a thourand dollars worth of sidewalks, and work on some of the walks commenced yesterday, when the defect in the pro- ceedings being dlscovered the work was atopped. A BOLD BEGGAR. He Gets Rimself Under a Charge of Attempted Robbery. The man Lyons, arrested for attempted robbery on Main street, had his hearing yesterday, and was held to await the action of the grand jury. Not having any means of giving bail, he was sent to jall. He is a hard looking fellow, and it is sald he only got out of jail in Omaha the day before he was arrested here. It seems that in golng down Main street late at night he met a stranger, named Wolf, a resident of Omaha, and halled Wolf with—*‘Say, partner, I'm dead broke, n't had any supper; glveme a quarte! Wolf pulled some money out of his pocket, and find- ing he had nothing smaller than a half dollar, was about to put the money back when the fellow ordered him to give it all up, accompanying this request with a threat of violence. Wolf naturally ob. jected so giving up his money, and Lyons with an oath reached back of him as if to draw a revolver, and at this juncture Deputy Marshal Mullen, who chanced to come up, nipped him, and took him to the statlon. ——— Nouce, Couxcin Bru owa, May 28, 1885, --Notice 1s hereby gncn that the regullr annusal meeting of the stockholders of the Council Bluffs City Water Works com- pany will be held at the office of the com- pany, No. 26 Pearl street, in the city of Councll Bluffs, Iowa, on Wednesday, the 10th day of June, 1885, at 2 o'clock, p. m , for the electlon cf directors to serve the ensuing yesr, and the transaction of such other business as may lawfully come before it. The Emall.pox Claims and How They are Disposed Of, The counly board has been wrostling with the bllls incurred durlng the small- pox eeason, These clalms were reforred to the county attorney, and after exam- ining the clalmants and witnerses under onth, he has prepared a report on most of the bllls. These bills amount to about £2,200, but the amounts which he reo. ommends the board to pay foot up about half that sum. There was scme dispute, as will be remem- bered, between the county and the olfy board of health, as to who shonid take charge of the cases. The board of health at last took the matter in hand, and not belng satisfied with the county physloian, the board made a contract with Dr. Sey- bert to attend the cases at $100 for each oase. The dootor’s bill amounted to $725, but the board has refared to pay this bill, but proposes to pay $375, provided that the doctor will accept that amount in full. The reasons assigned by theboard for not paylng the full amount are that the county physiclan was the person who should have unded to thes 8, a8 he had contras os at $10 a lo, and that at the rate at which the other doctor had been em- ployed by the clty, a hundred caseswould | about bankrupt the countiy. The other claims were rettled as re- ported by the county attorney, the board paying thosa recommended by him, and rejecting tho others. Among those re- jected werebills of special police, amount - Ing to 868, it being clalmed that they were appointed by the mayor, and under the control of the council, instead of the board of health officers, The bill of the olty marshal for 102 was rejected, the county board adopting the suggestion of the county attorney that the marshal wes befng paid a regular sslary by the clty, and hence was not entitled to extra compensation, he being expected a8 a part of his dutles to serve as health officer. Dan Collamer had a bill in for services as nurae at the oy house, bat this was rejected on the ground that he had already sued the proprietor cf the house for the pay, and got a judgment. The bill of the proprleior of the houee for $163, for bedding, eto., de- stroyed on account of the diteate, was also rejected, on the ground that there waa 1o proof that the property was de— stroyed by legal order and in the way re- quired by the atatute. W. H. Kirken- dall had a claim In for $125 for services as nuree at the pest house, and $50 for hanling two bodles to thelr Jast resting place. The board allowed his claim as nurse, but rejected the other. The other bills were of smaller amounts and were slfted out in about the same manner, the board rejecting many of them and rednc- ing others, SHIFTING THE BURDEN. The City Council Wauts the County Board to do the Raising The city council met as a board of equalization yesterday and adopted the following reolution, which they will pre- sent to the county board with the books this morning, the aldermen to march to the scene of presentation In a body, headed by the mayor: “‘Resolved, That the board finds upon examination that the assessment as re- turned by the assessors of tha first and second districts, composing the city of Councll Binffs, Is on a general average well equalized, but we also find that the total valuation is too low, therefore be it ““Resolved, That the board of supervis- ors be, and they are hereby requested to e @ raise of ten per cent on the total amount of assessment.” It seems like an easy way for the coun- oll to get out from under the responsi- bility of raising the atsessment, but it is claimed that the councll hes no right to do apything but ‘“‘equalize,” and that such a general change rests with the coun- ty board. Whether the county board will take the same vlew of it, and accept the responelbility, or not, s a question which will probably be answered this morning. A FRISKY FELLOW. A Hotel Olerk Sprees Away His Em ployer's Money, Tom Howard, who has been clerking in the hotel at Neola, for Mr, Hamilton, was arzested here on complaint of Ham- ilton, who claimed that Howard had col- lected about forty doilars of his money, and had taken a watch and ekipped out, Tt appeared that Johnnle Barleycorn was more responsible than Howard, for the fellow had been drinking so that he bardly realized that he had been spend- ing his employer's money. When ar- rested he had the watch and about eight dollars left, and theee were turned over te Mr. Hamilton, who out of sympathy for the young mwau concluded not to prosecute, e —— PERSONAIL, Mra, 8.
