AN ol p— g g et e s THE DAILY BEE--SATURDAY, JUNE 6. 1885, LINGOLN. Geoeral Evenls of tic Day at the Capitol of the State. pening Exercises of Commence~ ment at the State University, A Young Man Drowned—Incidents Gathered Freom Political, Bocial and Business Circles, GENERAL NEWS, THE COMMENCEMENT OPENING. Reported by The Brk's Barean, LiNcots, Nob,, Juno 5 —The phildicean noclety entertainmont was held at the opera house, The exerclses were opened by the Rev, B H Cuctls with prayer, Tho first part was “‘Naraght on earth,” by Rosier, mung by Messrs, Holyoke, Eddy, Wheeler and Barnaby, each voice being clear and distinet and the number rendered in excellent style, An oration followed by George B, Frankfort on **A true theory,” art and music being the true theory of 1ifs, An essay was read by Miss Mary L. Jones, on Milton, showin by fair comparieon that Milton, Ihouxfi unfortunate in early life, in married’ life, and even blinded was really the on% learned poet of anclent or modern times, The osea quite a classical production. It waa followed by & vocal solo, ““The flower girl,” by Beorg nori, sung by Miss Carrie Stevenson. Tnis lady proved that the had a finely cultivated and atrong voice. The next exercise was a debate, “'Did Lnther's influence ad van civilization?” affirmative, Con way 3 Millan, negative, Paul F. Clark, Mr. McMillan endeavored in a persunsive manver to prove that it was Luther and his inmediate influence which overthrow papal cppression, gave the world free thought, and finully established through out the entire world protestantism, while Mr, Clark attempted to prove that if Mr, Lutber nnll{ did all this, he was responsible for nearly al: the fsme, divorces and immorality which' now so_ generally pervades even the protestant lands, and it was hard to deter- mine from the forcs and strength of the argn ment which was right. A piano solo, “*L'Africaine,” by Miss Minnie D. Oochrane, filled the soul with music and received much applause. The recitaticn, “Fall of the Pemberton Mill,” by Miss Minnle B. Latta, was one of the features of the evening, Her whole soul thought and feeling seemed to fire with in spiration at_each critical period. Her voice is clear, with a silver rin7, her feeling pathet- ic, her style tragic, and her ing strong. Tu an oration on “‘Rickelien” ¥red E. Shep- herd appealed strongly to the sympathios to overlook some of poor Richilen's many faults and revere his memory on account of his abilities as a statesman, though historians do not. Mr. Shepard is an earnest speaker, and will be heard from outside of the philo- dicean club The vocal kolo and closing piece Miss Lillus Peck, “ O ioving heart, trust on,” was splendidly rendered, Her rich melodious voice was stir and she convinced every one of her qualifications in vocal musio, The entertainment was a credit to the so ciety and to the univereity, The Lincoln tancery s run- ning a lwmge force on full time with all the work they can haudle. The manage- ment have recently received an order for $30,000 worth of hides to be delivered at Fort Leavenworth. This is the right kind of enterprise, Lincoln has its full completement of cheap dress-makers but fow or no _artistic cutters and fitters. A second edition of Worth whether male or fomale, would do a thriving, .business at once, A rumor is prevalont on the streets that the resignation of Mnj. Pierce, registerer of the land office hero. hus baen called for but it , lacks confirmation. Mr. Stravg, of Omaha, fa congratulating himself oAer vhe tost made with the city water works, The citizens sre, likewiss, much elated over the result. A heavy raia storm, with some hall, visited Raymond and vicinity Thursaay evening, Matters are very quiet at the county court just at present Even the matrimonial in- dustries do not seem to keep pace with the other booms of our city and county, only one marriage license having been issued so far this month, The county commissionera do not seem to be entirely satistied with the cfty assessors’ returns, claiming 1n many instances that the assessors have discriminated in the interests of the wealthier class, 'This undoubtedly is true, and still the assessors may not be alto gether to blume. The board of equalization meet for the purpose of righting these wrongs and it remains to ba seen whether the board will protect the average property holder as againat tho wealthy in the matter of taxation, Commencemsnt day at the state university is next Wednesday, June 10th, on which day the exercises of laying the corner stone of the chemical Iabratory will take place at noon, The regular weekly general gospel meeting of the youcg men's christian association, to take placa at their rcoms on Tenth streot, batween O and P, to-morrow afternoon at :50. Serviczs will bo conducted by Len Howley. Gov. Butler passod throueh the city yes- terday from Chicego, homoward bound . ). "L, Mackey, Blue Hill; J, Simmons, ; Frauk Sharp, Fremont; Col. Mr. Falkner is re turning homo from having transferred 268 Nez Perce Indians from the Indisn territory £ their own reservation in Idaho.
