On Sunday afternoon about 4 o’clock, a8 John O'Grady was trying to pull the pln between two frelght cars in the (" yard at Paclfic Junction, he tripped his foot and fell, the brake-beam striking him, causlng him a serlous Ipjury. O'Grady is a married man, Col. Sapp’s thorough blooded grey hound, “Jennle,” has produced a litter, which in quality and quautity is a marvel. There are thirteen of the little ones, and they are all dolng well, making a happy family, which is exclting the admiration of many callers on her ladyship. A bootblack, who has been hanging around town all winter, was yesterday brought before Judge Aylsworth, the little fellow being very destitate and dirty, and inquiry leading to the di covery that he has a alster living at Ex- ira, arrangements were made to send him there. The Council Blufts driving park assocl- atlon when 1t gave its falr in tho fall of '88, was backed up by a number of citi- zons, who pledged themselves in amounts from $25 up, to help psy for any deficlt that might arlse, There was such a de- fioit, and the assoolation began calling for these pledges to be redeemed, but a fow held back, Yesterday the assoclation began sults agalnst a number of proml. nent cltizens on these claims, The same ‘‘doctor,” who was reported a8 having eloped with a Glenwood woutan, and who has been writen up several times under the name of McMenomy, is now sald to be working Keg creek and Sliver creek townships, and to have osught & goodly amount of game, His plan szems to ba to get a patient to gi him a note, and then to sell the note, and after giviog one {restment to tell them to come to Omaha and get the other treatments, if they want them, The msyor Is expected to return from his eastern trlp this evenlog. The pro- hibitionists will not, therefore, have much longer to walt to see what hels goling to do about the ealoors. It is not expected that be will shoulder aby great responaibility In the matter, as he holds that it is not any more bhis business to enforce the state law than of any private cit'zen, he belng called on to run the city and not the state, This was the po- aitlon he took before he went away, and he has doubtless eeen nothlng during his absence to change his mind, There was a little “‘brash” on Broad. way yesterday forenoon between two well-known aporting men, One of them, known at ceney Bob," i d tohave been keepiog the brother of the other pretty well filled up with drink, and steering bim against divers games, virta ally robbing him of bis money. *‘Bob’ had been with this man over to Omahs, brother meeting Bob, whose other name 18 Lyon, took him to task for thue roping In this man, and started in to thump him as he deserved, hut Bob would not walt to be thumped, and dodglng the first blow he went flying down tho street, There will be no arrests, et — Plumbing and_water work Is_our special business, Lewis & Gilbert, Main street plambers —— PERSONAL, Frank Nic:ulin, of Algons, Ta., is at the Padific, O, E. The dlsgracefal row in which ‘‘the triplets” became Involved at the St. Joe house last Saturday night, or Sunday morning, was yestorday the theme of street talk, and the comments were not very flattering to Mesars, Frainey, Pat. ton, and Galvin. Patton was not so anx. ious yesterday to prosecute the hotel man a8 on the night of the row, and declared that he would have the care dlemlesed, bat it was evident that this course womld only confirm the reports that the trlpiets were the ones to blame, and ‘Lat they in thelr sober moments had repented. Fralney declared thst ii Patton declined to prosecute, then he, Frainey, would assoms the role of prose- culing sitorney snd push the case to 8 conviction, The idea of a jus- tico of che peace being with a party who were trying to induce a saloon man to violate the state law, and to violate the ordinance requirlng them to close thelr bars at 11 o’clock, and then after a row had broken out In constquence of the man’s refusal to sell drinke, to issue a warrant for his arrest, and to have him brought before himself for trial, and then to have him kept in all night, when it was known that he could be had any tune to answer to any such charge, and then to threaten to prossoute the case himself if the others of the party re- fased; all this shows a sad state of the judlclary. The voters who, by their sufirages, put such a man in office, must be ashamed of him, even if he feels no shame for himself, If a great wrong was done to Frainey and his frlends, it would be the proper thing for him to seok jus- tice before some other and disinterested tribunal, but to attempt to deal out jus- tlce himself under such clrcumatances s a larce, only equaled by his attempt to hold the chalrmanship of a ward caucus when nine out_of ten of those present were yelliog *‘Put him out.” It is to be hoped that this affalr will be siited thor- | oughly untll all the facts are breught out, aud the blame of the disgracefal affalr 1s placed at _the door cf the guilty party, whoever it may be. ——— Substantial abstracts of title and real estato loans. One of Tar Ber readers oalls attention to the followlng state of affairs as glven In Bradstreot's, and the state- ments will bo read with equal interest by other property ownera hore. Just at the time when OChlcago s abandoning wood for street paving and adopting tone, the groat Enropean cities that have been lcng experimenting with different pavements, are abandoning stone and taking towood, The difficulty in Chioago seems to be that no pavement has ever been properly lald there, and the probabllity is the stons pavement now In favor will turn out as much of a failare as the old wood did. ‘In Lon- don, Parls and some other large cltles abroad, stone, maoadam and asphalt have each in turn been condemned and the preference given to wood. Paris, less than two years ago, was largely paved with macadam and asphalt, but today the principal thorough- farea are paved with wood, even down to the Champs Flysees, where it would soom the former macadam should have swored the purpose. Miles of wood are aleo lald In London. The result in both theso clties appears to be generally satisfactory. The wood payement ia easily and quickly repaired; It is not so damaging to vehicles; offera less rer tance than stone, and, above y has greatly reduced the dlstracting rattle. Oxford street and Holborn are like a drawing room now in comparison to lower Broadway. The method of laying the wood abroad differs consider- ably from that generally employed in Chicago. A thick and durable concrete foundation 1s first constructed, upon which & bed of coment, as bard an smooth as a floor, is lald. Then the placed with the usual gravel between the rows, and over the who'e is poured a thinmixture of ce- ment which ' permeates’Zand fills every Interstice, The Chicago method was to level the street, fill in with sand, and af- ter laylng a layer or two of cheap pine holrdl, dplnuo the blocks on them, The boards decayed and the pavement soon became & mere succession of ruts and holes. Thereupon the Chicagoans con- demned the wood, when it was the engl- neera and contractora, who were growing rich out of the job, who should have been condemned. The Ohlcago stone pave- ment is pat down in a flimsy way, and must soon be cendemned also. A gvod 6use cannot be built on sand—iuelther can a good pavement, e —— The Dime Show, The dime museum and theatre opened at the skatlug rink last evening with pretty good prospects of success. -aterprlse 18 a novelty here, and some- whav of anexperiment. There are alzcady & num- ber of real curlosities, well worth seeing, and amply repaying the visitor for the nominal prico of admission. The theatre part of the entertalnment opens with the Georgia minstrels, who are to appear all of this weel. |y These minstrels have just closed a long and successful engagement in Omahs, whezethey received many words of praise: Nothing has yet been offered in the way of an entertalnment here:. giving so much amusement fov the mon- oy 24 {s now offered at the dime museum, and each weekan ontlre change is prom- fsed.
