Ratliff is at home agaln, Taree dranks were ground thiough the police coart yesterday. The Oouncil Blufts lron works are pre- paring to start up agaln. The Council Bluffs branch of the land league gave a ball at Beno's ball last night. Either the tramps are great llars or about nine out of ten of them come from Kanaas City. Perhaps both. The ladles of the Harmony Misslon so- cioty are to glve another of their soclals at the residence of J. R. Sell this even- Ing. Tho water service was extended along Ross street yosterday, by running gal- vanized pipe a distance of about 500 feot. Collins, the artlst, Is placing some ex- cellent specimens of his work in promi- nont show windows, attracting much at- tentlon, An old army frlend of Gen. Gibbon Iaughs at the ignorance of the Globe in claiming that he is & democrat. He eays he {8 and always has been a staunch re- publican, Al Smith’s little child got hold of the kerosene can, and got a pretty good sized drlnk, before discovered, but reme- dles promptly glven saved it from any very serlous harm. Henry Barbeau, for a number of years employed at the transfer, will open the hotel on Maln street corner of Ninth avenue. The house after belng renovated 18 to be named the *‘American House.” The valuable stalllon, owned by Mr. Hazard, and which was Injured as stated In yesterday's BEE, has been fouad to be 80 badly hurt as to render it necessary to shoot him. The loss will be §1,800. Raymond & Oampbell commenced yes- terday drlving plles for the foundation of the new jall. The work Is to be crowded right along, and a fow months will see the bullding ready for occupancy. Among the tramps brought forward yesterday wai onme young man who " claimed to have been a change pitcher for an eastern base ball club, but the club going to pieces, he had gone to work pitching bulscuits for a Kaneas Clty boarding house. The local depot of the Milwaukee & 8t. Paul has been repainted and fixed up in a neat manner. IE the other rallway companles would give Council Bluffs bet- ter depots, the improvement would be much appreclated. At present the local depots are a shame to aslty of this sizo. Yesterday morning about 7:16 o'cloock a8 Lawrence Holst was driving down Maln street in a top buggy with asplrited team belonging to Mace Wise, the front axle parted from the buggy, dumped the occupants out, injuring him only slight- ly. Heheldon to the relns, and was dragged ahout twenty feet. The judiclal contest by which Judge Aylesworth seeks to oust Judge Loof- bourow from the bench of the distrlct court, was to have come up for hearlng in Des Moines yesterday, but Judge Loof- bourow having been toc busy with hls judiolal duties to get hls evidence to- gether, a continuance was had by agree- ment. Tho Odd Fellows are making great pre- parations for the celebratlon of the anni- versary of the order next Tuesday. There will bo a parade In the afternoon of that day, and the dedicatlon of thelr new hall in ‘opera house blcck, and a grand ball in the evening.i A goodly number of prominents from out of the clty are expected to be present and a very interesting programme is belng ar- ranged, The Mortlmer & Weaver dramatic company gave another of thelr entertain- meonts at the opera house last evening, and drew a good sized audlence. Last night they gave “Falsely Accused,” a strong play, which they rendered well. The cheap prices for a very falr show seems to str.ke the people just about right. The same company wlll ocoupy the opera house for the rest of the week. J. W, Burton is showlog himself as more than an ordinary commedian, and In the Irish he I8 very fine. Arrangements are being made by which the skating rink is to be changed into a a mussum and theatre, A dozen carpen- tera are now at work makiog the needed changes, and improvements, Besldes a dlme museum, there are to be numerous entertainments, and some attractions have already been secured. The place Is to be opened next Monday evening, and the Georgia minstreluare to ocoupy it for a wook, The pext week there will be a dramatic company, and the followlng week there is to be a comic opera com- pany. This venture msy prove success- full, but it depends largely on how the K place is managed. The meeting of the state pharmacent- loal society, which cpens here cn the 12th of May, promlises to be an event of inter- ost not only to thoee of the profession but to the public generally, A large number of visitors from all parts cf the country will be here, and besides interesting pro- czedings there will bs an exhibit which will be of such size srd varlety as to muke the occation tomewhat of & fatr or|" exposition, The Mynster block, which has boen sccured for the use of the noclety, sffords rare accommodations, and the first floor will be devoted entirely to the exhibits, while the meetings will be held on the second floor, glvlng ample room for large sudlences. From the namber of exhibits already secared 1t Is evident that thls meeting will be the most sucosssfal yet held by the soclety. One young man was brought before the superior court yesterdsy on the serlous charge of breaking the seal of a loaded frelght car, and entering It. The young man gave his name as Bender, and ex- plained that he had been working Ina hotel at Logan, his widowed mother Ilvlng there also. Hc wanted to go to Omaha, whera hisunclehas a bakeryand to save paying fare, ho got Into a car which was foaded with grindstones, naturally not having any Intentlon of pocketing any of them, and none were found on hisperson. He was locked into the car, and when the train reached here he found a policeman waiting to gobble him, He claimed that he had $20 coming to him at the hotel, but that Instead of drawing it he left It for his mother. The judge TUHL MATYI X N THE DAILY BEE COUNCIL BLUFFS FOR THE LADIES. A Free Rids fo Omaha and Retarn for All the Ladies. Grand Excursion to Smith's Mam. moth Store, Omaha, on Batur- day, April 25th, There I8 a grand treat In store for the ladies of Council Bluffs and vlclnity. To.morrow, Smith, the great Omaha dry goods man, will run a speclal train from the Broadway depot, In Council Bluffs, to Omaha and return and will carry all the ladies who desire to go FREE OF OHARGE. You are not asked to buy goods unless you want to, but can go freo just the ssme. The tralu will leave the Broadway depot at 10:30 to-morrow morning and will leave Omaha on the return trip at 4 o'clock p. m. On that day Smith will make a great speclal sale of Silks, drees goods, Spring wraps, kld gloves, Parasols and Fans, let him go and he hurried off to see his Omaha uncle, The suit of Dr. Bellinger agalnst Mr. Knemeyer, the proprictor of the Coy house, has been declded sgainst the doc- tor. In this sult the doctor claimed 8150 for attendance when Mr. Knemeyer had the small-pox. The patlent clalmed that he never employed the doctor, but that the doctor visited a county patient in the rame room, The case was a badly mixed one, and the doctor could not prove any direct contract, and hardly enongh facts to warrant the holding of an implled contract. The patlent brought in evldence to show that the doctor did not make as many visits to the house as he had charged for in his bill, and that he was out of the place on the last few days on which vislts were charged. He also brought in evidence to show that he ald not take any medicine from the doctor, except a little herb tea, which the doctor had advleed his wife to steep for him, and the other man, confined in the same room. The small-pox cases promise to farnish plenty of business for the courts, before they aro all settled. e —— - ‘What they Think of Cook, The securing of Joseph Cook for a leoture here May 11th {s the new enter- prise of the young men who gave Coun- cil Bluffs a treat in the Bernhardt-Liste- mann concert. As must be known, Joseph Cook stands in the front rank cf the world’s orators. Hereare two of the many opinlons expressed by great men, concerning_ him: From President James McCosh, Prince- to College, in the Catholic Presbyterian for Septomber, 1879: I regard Joseph Cook as a heaven- ordalned man, He has as much power of eloquence as Parker, and vastly more acqualntance with ohilosophy than the mystic Emerson. He lightens and thun- ders, throwing vivid light on a topic by an expression or comparfson, or strik- ing & presamptuous error as by a bolt from heaven. From Rev. R. Payne Smith, Dean of Canterbu The lectures are remarkably eloquent, vigorcus and powerful. ——— Bothering Fero, Detective Fero, who has a keen look- out for the Interests of the Milwaukee & St. Paul company, yesterdsy was com- plained of for assaulting a man giving bis name as Barney Tate, a stranger In the city, who is sald to have been caus- ing a good deal of trouble around the yards, and whose appearance was that of a tramp. Fero drove him out of the company's yards, and In an energetic manner, whereapon the fellow went be- fore Justice Fralney, who, of course, {ssued a warrant. The case was continued for a week, by which tlme the fellow will probably- be far from here, and the cate will be dlamissed. Tate was arrested yesterday afterncon as a tramp, but al- lowed to go agatn, it being understood that he would leave the city for the city’s good. It Is sald that some of the em- ployes of another railway, to bother Fero, put the fellow up to having Fero arrested, ———— Facts worth remembering when you boy Wall Paper: 1st.—That Beard, next door to postoftice, has the largest stock to seloct from. 2d-—That his prices are as low as the lowest. 3d—That he is a practlcal Interior decorator and employs none but skillful workmen, —— OOMMEROIAL, OCOUNOIL BLUYYS MARKWT, NWhu;—No. 1 milling, 70; No, 2, 65; o.
