4 < " SUCKED IN A SEWER. Reported Horrible Fate of w0 Bodies in an Omaka Sewer. Probably a Fish(er)y Btory. Early yesterday forenoon a well known buslness man told a Ber raporter that Mz, W. R, Fisher had just told him of an occurrence which, If true, was most horrifying; #o0 much so, that the repor- ter determined to say nothing of it in the Evexine Bee vntil he could satisfy him. self about it. Durlng the day every ef- fort was made to learn the facts and the reputable business man was asked agaln at 10 o'clock last night about it. He re. plied that he had seen Mr. Fisher dur- Ing the late evening and asked him again and particularly about the report and gathered theso facts, if the atatements were facts. ¢ Flsher says thathls little niece declares that eho saw three well-dressed ladies walking alorg west of the nail works in southwest Omaha beyond the terminus of the sewer there, Thata deep gully had been washed by the torrent of water which fell daring the storm, and because of the stopp1ge or chckiag of tho sewer, could not be carrled off, and had washed out a passagaway under the sldes of this gully. That thesa three ladios WERE PRECIPITATED into this'gally, filled with water, mud and filth, by the glving away of the banks or overhanging sides. Tnat one of them succeeded In getting out all mud-stslned and covered with filth, and went away. That the other two fell In, disappeared and wera scon _no more, the presumption being that they were drawn or in some way got into the sewer and of courss DIED THERE. “Are you certaln about this,” querled the gentleman of Mr. Fisher, who re- plled that he dld not see it, but his niece declares she did sea it ‘“‘with my own eye! and that all the neighbors say they saw the three ladies walking upon the caved-In banks. No questioning could change Mr. Fisher's story and the strange part of it was that the man and his Informant are of good repute and would hardly be parties to such a canard asthis And yet how two grown women could be thus killed in a oity llke Omaha and not missed by somebody, and another one pltched into a guily filled with water and fiith and tell nobody she had ““spotled her nice dress,”which the “niece” declares she wore, presented o state of alleged fac:s that the Bee man, gullible as he may be, could not gulp down at once. The story is decldedly fish(er)y but ls told to the reader, as repeatedly told to the reporter. At alate hour a visit was made to the section named in this article but nothing more was learned than is given here. The BEk tells it as & com- mon rumor, but it distinctly declares that 1t doesn’t *‘swallow {t whole.” JAILED FOR WIFEBEATING. “Married for Fifceen Years and has Beaten me all this Time,” A reporter stepped into Judge Sten- berg's court about 3 o'clock yesterday af- ternoon and eaw clotely velled a small woman who eilent and alone. Presently an officer brought in a dark visaged man who was very pale and left him standlng near the woman, by whom he qulcily took a seat. The reporter was obliged to hear their muttered conversation, and in fact did not try very hard to avoid it, because he expected it was ‘‘bearing on the case” as the pettifoggers Wells presontly the judge called *‘Mr. Spain” and told the dark visaged man he was charged by his wife with assault and battery, the specificatlons bsing that he frequently, but parttcularly Wednesday and yesterday morniog, beat her. Spain arose, heard the judge through, and In a matter-of-fact way said he pesded guilty. The judge directed the woman to remove her vail snd take the witness stand, that she might tell the ciroumstances of the offence to enabla him to measure the proper degres of punishment deeorved. The woman, whose face showed much of care and many lines of troubls, age, sickness or something, stated in a straight-forward marner that she had lived with the man as his wife for fifteen yesre; that they had several children; that she bad ‘‘kept” him all winter and supported herself and children, and that ths man oftea gots mad and bea's her and them roughly and kicks and pulls the bair of tho children and her- self, That thls has besen his habit for years, and that she couldn't stand it any longer. To this etatoment the man (sotto voce) replisa: “‘I have nothing to say, | let her say what she will, 1 will not tell on her. That Is monli boeh; I did alap her face with myopen hand; she knows why; bu: let it go.” The court directed him, it was the first charge against him, to be lmprisoned for thirty days. He received his sent- ence without a word or movement and tarted out, He called her back to goodbye and speak one word about thelr home matters. She answ monosyllable and left the room, while the policeman took the man to jall to medl- tate on the ups and downs, the ins and outs (especially the outs) of marrled life. Theso clroumstaunces have been nar- rated here for & purpose. Not that it {s pleassnt to parade before the readers of a reputable and family paper the hap- penings of the police court, but to call attention to the fact that such “ases as this are cally hsppening here in a sup osedly refined and Christian clty. 'hink about it. Fifteen years of life as man and wife; cbildren born un'o them; mutoal joys aod sorrows, plans and bopes; and during these fifleen years con- stant beatiog of the womsn who bore his children,’and durlng the fewer years of thele young lives, constant bair pulling and kicking of the little onos that he claims a8 his own flesh snd blood. 1t is folly to sen'imentalize about ‘'the man who lays his hand upon & woman save for an_ act of kindness, is a wretch whom 'tls base flattery to name a cow- ard,” This don't stop the practlce or changa the facts. It ls useless to repeat words of reproach to a father who beats his helpless babies, because no fine sensi- biliy is left, it they ever existed, for such a bsast, It is a cold fact, that on every rido these thiogs sre happening every day in high and low placas. 1t"is not for tha raporter to do more than record the fact thst such is the case; 1t is lor the Bxx's readers to devise some plan to stop this degrading state of affairs. These astaulis and blows are not confined to men vpon women by & great dea); but no wmatter from whem they come, they bespeak a low, degraded nature—vixenish, coarte and mesn In a woman; beastly, brutal and cowardly in & man, THE COURT HOUSE WALL, The Uommissioners Declde Upon Material—Enforcing Strict Oollection of Taxes, —— Yesterdsy moraing the county com- missloners met t> consider the plans for the new retalning wall, and to declde upon thematerial to be used In its con. structlon. The commissloners decided upon a wall 105 feet In length; the maln body will be built of Fort Collins or some other substantial stone, while the tent stone-work” will be of Borea sandstone. The plans and spacifications of Archi- tect Mogers for the grand entrance have been adopted with a few modifications, A flight of twenty-five stone ataps will lead from Farnam street to the court house, The steps will be six feet long, twelve Inches *‘In the head” and six Inches ‘‘rise,” and will approach from east and west, a landing8x34 feet at their top. From this landing a flight of light steps leads to that conducting one to the court house, aggregating forty-nine steps traversed from the vestibule cf the edi. fice. In front of the bullding an arch will be copstructed Inscribed, ‘‘Douglas OCounty,1885.” At its base the wall will ba five feet thick, at the top two feet nine Inches, set on a foundatlon of stone and concrate—and surmounted by casing and surrounded by a balustrade, The following resolution was adopted: Resolved, That the county treasurer be and is hereby directed at once to collect all delin- quent parsonal taxes due Douglas county, and a striot adherence to the law ia insisted upon,” ————— Investigating the Hog Diseaie. Doputy Sheriff Crowell received yesterday morning the following clrcular letter from the department of agrlculture, relative to the swine disease which has been ragin in Nebraska. Accompanying the circu- lar is a series of questions pertalniog to the general symptoms of the disease. The letter reads as follows: Sm:—During the year 1884 diseasos of swine prevailed to a wide extent in the state of Nebraska, and the losses were 5o groat as to attract the serious attention of all thos in- terested in this industry. This department has been appealed to by many prominent citi- zens of this state to institute an_investigation looking to a discovery of the cause of the maladies that have proved eo destructive to these animals, and recommend such sanitary and preventive measures as the exigencies of the case may require, It was the intention of the department to send a competent veteri- narian to conduct the the investigation with- in the borders of the state, but this has been prevented for the present by inveuligltlunu of deatructive contagicus diseases prevailing elsewhere, requiring the constant attention of the full professional force of the Bureau of Aviwal Industry, Inview of this fact the department has determined to institute a preliminary examination by addressing this circular letter to its regular correspondents in Nebraska, and to msny other prominent and imtelligent steck-raisers of the state whose names have been furnishedus, If those re- ceiving this circular will promptly and a3 ac- curately as possible answer the questions on the opposite page they will confer a favor on the department acd assist in collecting in- tormation which may prove of great impor- tance to the swine industry of the state, A return envelope is enclosed, which can be used without the prepayment of postage. Very respectfully, NomrMAN J, COLEMAN, Cowmissioner. The department’s determination to fn— vestigate and define the causes aud symptoms of the disease will bs received with satisfaction by the farmers through- out the state, whoto losses by the hog malady were unusally heavy during the yoar 1885, e —— Notes from the Courts, Nothing of Importance was done in the distrlot court to-day, and the usually busy halls are dzserted and lonely—bar- ring of course, the presenca of the clerk and his depaty.
