It is to be regretted, however, here as else- where, that parents do not see to it more strictly that their children enjoy the full privileges of such a system of ed ucation, Tho report shows the population of the city as estimated from the school census at the begiuning of the school yoar, September 1, 1883, as 27,743; num- ber of persons of school age in the city at that time, 7 244; number of pupils en- rolled during the year, 2,800; averago number belonging to the schools during the year; 1,871; average daily attend- ance, 1 number of cases of tardi- ness, 10,278, and number of hours lost by this tardiness, 1,813, or over 300 school days.
