Facts from the Annual Report of Su- perintendent McNaughton, Prof, James McNaughton, the super intendent of the city schools, has pre- pared his annual report for the year end- ing August 31, 1884, Itisa very com- plete aud eatlsfactory report, and pre- sents a showing indicating not only that the schools are being woll cared for, but presenting an encouraging outlook. It is to be regretted, however, here as else- where, that parents do not see to it more strictly that thelr children enjoy the full privileges of such a system of ed ucation. Tho report shows the population of the city as estimated from the school census at the beginning of the school year, September 1, 1883, as 27,743; num- ber of persons of school age in tho city at that time, 7 244; number of pupils on- rolled during the year, 2,800; average number belonging to the schools during the year; 1,871; average daily attend- ance, 1, wumber of cases of tardi- ness, 10,278, and number of hours lost by this tardiness, 1,813, or over 300 school days. There are three male teach- ors and fortynine fomale teachers em- ployed, tho average salary of the former being 868 33 and ofthe temale teachers, 251.02. There aro thirteen school build- ings in tho district and seatings for 2,- 351, The cost of instruction per cnpl\n based on enrollment is §).63 and on avorage attendance $16 40. Estimating the enrollment at private and parcchial schools also, the report estimates that the total enrollment of pupils in all the schools of the city as 3,079, or nearly, which is 43 per cent of thore of school ment, and 27 por ceut less than 1t can reasonably be expected to be.
