There was not enough of it to make a lady's dress ac cording to any known pattern, and yot his Gallic parsimony forbade his wasting it. Suddenly a bright idea seemed to strike him. He rounded off the corners, and made a large hole in the centre, and hung it about a model 1n the room. To shirr it in the back and arrange a yoko In front was the work of but a foew moments, when lo! a new gar- ment was vouchsafed to the female world. This man-milliner was the world- famous Worth, and this new garment was the Mother Hubbard. Itsuddenly be- camo the rage among fair Parisiennes. Little girls wore It, for whom it was not. Lean ladies woro it, to whose torms is lent an added grace, and stout ladies wore it, to whose forms it lent nothing. In short, everybody wore it and wore it overywhere. No such garment madness had been scen since the Dolly Varden took the world by storm. In some parts of America, too, it came to be almost as much at home as in the land of its origin, Tho propriety of its use as a street drass provoked much discus- sion, and in ono place ot least, & small town in Western Missouri, it became the subject of litigation, a learned justice declaring that its use was a violation of town ordinance, “in such case made and provided.” ““Thero {s this poculiarity,” said a lady conneeted with one of the popular Wash- ingtcn street dry goods houses, *‘there is this peculiarity about the Mother Hub- bard.
