MINOR MENTION, See J. Reiter's summer goods. The city seems to be having slow work disposing of its steamers, Some big shipments of heavy farming implements are being made. F. A. Sears says that new boy of his shouts for Blaine and not for Cleveland, The Wabash passenger train now ar- rives at 4:15 p, m., an hour later than before. Tho aged bag-pipe player, who lost a log in the C., B. & Q. yards last fall, is in the city again. J. L. Ratkin has moved from Broad. way to No. 610 Main street, where he will continue in the produce business, Leon Lozier ought to have taken off his shirt when he run with Hamilton at the tair grounds. He wouldn't have been beaten so badly. Samuel Weirich, who has been very ill for some time, was reported yesterday as being rapldly sinking, with little pros- pect of recovery. Work is progressing well on the addi- tional buildings at the institute for the denf and dumb. The coming seesion will open September 10. J. E. Kilfeather, who was arrested for hitting Henry Spetman Jr. with a chair, and who jumped his bail, has been caught and fined §256 and costa, The street crossingsare ina horrible shape, at least they are suppored to be. Most of them are out of sight and thelr condition must be that ofthe lost. The infant son of W. 8. and Annle Cooper died at 6:30 Monday evening of cholera infantum. The funeral took place from Mrs, McGee's, on Woodbury avenue, yesterday afternoon, The bootblack who_fell down in the park Monday in a sort of spasm, was still at the police headquarters yesterday and seemed to be recovering his strength, so that no danger is apprehended. A time table has been prepared for the street cars to run by, but it is evident that the drivers and conductors haven’t been furnished with copies of it yot, judging from the irregularlty of thotrips. “Captain Carver and a band of his Indians, who took part in the “Wild ‘West” show, returned yesterday from the east over the Northwestern and were taken to Sloux City, which is near their homes. The newspaper fiend used up a column yesterday about an accident on the street car track which did not happen, but then it was a wet day. If a real accident had happened, what would the fiend have done? The caso of Mrs, Juhn Mergel against Mr. Doerflinger, in which she claims $56,000 damages bacause he sold her hus- band beer, was called in the superior court yesterday, and continued until the September term, The Maln street car on its forenoon trips has no bells or othor signal to at- tract the attention of passers-by, or those waiting to take the car. In the after- noon, however, the teams have sleigh- bells enough to do for a carnival, 1t is said that one of the troubles in nent parties here, who are opposed to the present city administration, wrote to |’ New York bankers with whom they arc | } acquainted, telling them that the bonds were not legal, A. M. Wood, who is with Taylor & Oanniff, got up the other night to get some medicine from a cupboard for a sick baby, and in reaching for it a bottle of carbolic acld was tipped over and some spilled on his face burning 1t badly, es- pecially about one eye. Sherifl Dan Forrell was horo yestorday. He had just recelved a lotter from Sheriff McCord, who was shot by the desperado Roaynolds at Marshalltown. MocCord writes that he is able to walk about some, and there is overy reason to believe that he will recover. This will probably save Reynolds’ neck, for it was openly and firmly declared that in the event of McCord's death Reynolds would be lynched. Charles Hickson, a farmer boy, who has been lying in jail on a charge of as- sault with intent to commit murder, was brought before Judge Aylesworth yester- day on a writ of hubeas corpus. It ap- peared that the row was a general one, and that young Hickson was not so much to blame for hitting another fellow with 8 club, The judge remanded him to jail with insiructions to have an information filed charging simple aseault, to which charge Hichson will plead guilty, When the city council put up §600 in cash for Mayor Vaughan to go to New York, it was generally supposed he wes going there to sell bonds, but from hie success in getting intorviewed by the Herald reporter, it secms to be more of & democratlc anission. Ia the course of his bombastic talk about lowa going dem ocratic, he isreported as raying: *'In my city of Couneil Blufls, out of a population of 83,000 T do not belicve £ity Gorman SHARP SCHEMING. A Fellow by Raising Notes Gathers in a Roll, He Gets Away With the Plunder, One day last week a man appeared in this vicinity pretending to selling nursery stock from Rochester, N. Y. His state- ment was that he was not a salaried agent, but was buying the stock and sell- ing it, for his own profit, ard thus con- troling the territory. He effected at loast two sales, one to Mr. Spel Miller and the other to Mr. Bokemper, both living outside the city. The sale to one amounted to §2 and the other 83, and he took notes for these small amounts, pay- able in the fall. The notes were in the form of printed blanks, which he had filled out, and the men had signed. Af- torwards it seemed that he added two clphers to tho 82 in one case, and to the 83 in the other case, and wrote the word “hundred” in between the written “Two" and the printed *‘Dollars,” there being plenty of space on the dotted line, and no dash of the pen to prevent. In this way he raised the notes from &2 and 23 to 8200 and $300. On Saturday he called on Mr. J. W. Rodefer, who is in the brokerage business, and wanted to sell thenotes, Mr. Rodefer, with his usual precaution, took the pains to in- quire as to the credit of the parties, the genuineness of the signatures, and being satisfied by the information which he thus gained of responsible parties, who were posted in regard to the standing, and familiar with the signa- tures of the parties, he entered into negotiations with the nursery-man for the purchase of the notes at a dis- count. He paid the fellow only a por- tion of the amount agreed upon, the seller to come in yesterday and get the rest. In the wmeantime Mr. Rodefer sent notice to Mr. Miller and to Mr. Bokemper that he had thelr notes, des- cribing them, and that if they desired to pay them before due he would make a reagsonable discount. This called out the denial of these men that they had signed notes to any such amount, and the game became clear. The fellow had not shown up for the balance of the money, and as nearly as could be ascer- talned he took the train Sunday for Chicago, and has doubtless ere this puta sufficient number of miles between him- self and Council Bluffs to render any further search for him useless. The fellow gave his name as Thayer, hut prodably has other alias, so that even this gives little or no clue by which to follow him up. It seems almost useless to repeat the old advice to beware of signing any sort of papers presented by strangers, for the advice seems to be un- hoeded, even by those who ought to heed it most. o —— THE PUBLIC LTBRARY. Donahue of Omaha, were on thls side of the river interviewing the police officers, in regard to a man whom they had arrested on that side of the river, and whom they supposed to be John Phillips, who is wanted for rape in Hazel Dell township, and for whose capture a 2100 reward was offered. From what they could learn here they became pretty well satisfied that the man they have is the man want- ed. The alleged victim of Phillips’ lust was a little Swode girl, and great indig- dation exists in the community where the crime was committed. HSONAL, There's “A Mann” from Hamburg, at the Ogdon, B. W.
