WILL THE ALERT BE RETURNED TO ENGLAND? Informaiton has been recelved at the Navy de- partment from Secretary Chandler to the effect that the Greely relief vessels will remain in com- mission, at New York, for the present, after land- ing their surplus stores, and the necessary orders have been tssued. ‘The officers attached to the ves- sels will, therefore, remain with them as long a3 they are in commission. The law provides for the final disposition of the Thetis and Bear, though an effort will be male to keep them in the navy. ‘othing can be learned as to the disposition of the Alert. “ihe question as to whether she shall be re— turned to England or not has not been decided. At the Navy department the general impression exists that she Is the property of the United States, having been presented unconditionally by England. ‘The object Of the gift Was to ald in the rescue of the Greely party. If she had Deen lost, 1t would have been the oss of United States property. But having accomplished her mission without accident, the Tather delicate question arises whether she should nol be Leudered to her original owners, General Logan’s Summer Trip. General and Mrs. Logan yesterday, accompanted by Senator and Mrs. Miller, drove to many points of interest in the Mohawk valley, visiting the home of General Spinner. General Logan will leave Herkt- mer early to-morrow morning, reaching Utica at 8 o'clock, where a private car will be placed at his disposal. VIEWS OP A WELL KNOWN ARMY OFFICER. “What do you think of that story about cannl- balism and shooting in the Greely party?” asked a Stax reporter of a well known army officer this morning. ‘Well, in my opinion, the story of canni- baltsm ts posaible, but I think that of shooting de- cldedly probable. In fact, I shall not be at all sur- prised when Greely asks for an investigation, as he certainly will, to learn that he did the shooting himself. And under the circumstances he would have made a very grave mistake If he had not done {tor ordered it done. Greely’s only hope of bring- ing his men through With their lives was in matti- taining discipiine, and he could only do that by ex- treme measures. 'If he had once lost control of his men all would have been lost. I imagine that Greely’s powers of endurance were greatly strength- ened by a realization of his position—that all de- pended upon him. When their stores were reduced to such a minimum that but the smallest quantity was allowed to cach man daliy the party Was in a pretty bad way. ‘The minds of the men were warped, and each one was naturally for uimselt alone. ‘If the first discovered tulef was not pun- ised at once, and severely, iu less than no ume they would have been scrambling for their foud like pigs at the trough, the weakest ones getting left, of course. Why, if T had been in Greely’s placa,” he continued, “and such were the eireum- Stances, I Would no more have hesitated to shoot the man than I would to drink this giass of water. I would consider it my duty. I shouid look upon tt in the light of mutiny on ‘board a vessel, und I | would maintain control of the vessel at all hazards. | Now, I know Greely. He is a fine officer, brave and ; Just,’and I don’t think be wouid hesitate a moment in slooting a man for stealing iood wnen all were starving. “Now mark what 1 say; he will ask foran Investigation, Shooting it will be justified. You needn't be too Sure that there was no cannibalisin, elther.” ‘THE METALLIC CASKETS, “Would it have been possible to open the caskets containing the remains of the Greely dead?” asked ‘tue Stan reporter. “It would have been a big jobto open them,” was the reply. “They were composed of boiler iron, and in each one were two huudred and forty bolts not screws—Dolts.” Z UNRECOGNIZABLE BODIES. Said another officer, who was standing by: “Lieut. Emory said that the bodies, when taken out of alcohol, were washed, wrapped in linen, after the manner of the Exyptian mummies, sewed in can- Vas, and then placed in the caskets, and I remem ber'the remark made by another officer of the ex- edition, thavit the bodies were taken out tiey could not be recognized.” ‘Lieut. Kisiingbury’s temains were Identifed by his false teeth, Which were Ued about his foreuead. What Gen. Hazen Did Say. By a misprint in Tug Stax yesterday Gen. Hazen ‘Was made to say, with relation to the devouring of the amputated limbs of their comrades by the Greely party, that “only one such instance occur- Ted, and tht was on shipboaid on the retura hothe.” 1c should have been “only one amputation occurred,” &c. Gen. Hazen’ this morning declined to make any further statement regardiug tue reported cannibal isin ainong Ue Greely party, adding, however, that he uad reéeived’ no information regarding it) and Uhut he had been misquoted in what be did say upon the subject. The Remains of Sergeant Crows. HIS WIDOW DOES NOT WISH TO HAVE THEM DISIN- TERRED, BUT THE BKOTHER OP THE DECEASED SAYS WE WILL HAVE THE CASKET OPENED. A Stax reporter this morning saw Mrs. Cross, the widow of Sergeant Cross, the first of the Greely Party to succumb to the terrors of starvation. She spoke of the story of cannibalism very calmly, and Sid she was sorry 1t had been started, “Its sald Unat the tron casket containing your husband's remains wil be opened and an investiga Uon nad” suggested THe Stan, «Yes, I know; but I ai opposed to it. ‘The mat- ter should not’ be further wittated, If it is true ‘that te survivors had to subsist upon the flesh of tuelr dead comrades, they are to be piued. What must have been tneir Horror! ‘Those who had to Tesort to suca a thing are the ones wuo sulfer. ‘The thing should be ushed.” “Then your husband's remains will not be dis- ‘turbea?” “I can't say that. It is what I want; but my ik Cross, says he wili ‘have the casket opened and the matter investigated, Unless he chines his mind, this will likely Le done. But ‘brother-in-law, Fi Idon’t ike it,” More Denials of the Story of Cannibal- ism. WHAT SECRETARY CHANDLER SAYS. Secretary Chandler upon being questioned, at Portsmouth, N. H., lastnight, in relation to the Story of cannibalism among the Greely party, seemed much agitated, and sa y that the Navy departnent has received no such Teport of the shooting of Henry and cannibalism as the New York Times gives. Of course you naturally next ask me Is the story true. Isay that sIdecline to say. Irefuse tosay anything further ‘about the matter.” COMMANDER SCHLEY’S INDIGNANT DENIAL. ‘When Commander Schiey was asked about the matter he sald: “There 13 not a word of truth in that story. You need not show it tome, for I hive read It. It has, been manufactured out o: whole cloth, and it I were Lieut. rely T'shouid take legal steps against the aper that pubiisied the outrageous statement, Now, regarding som of the spe: Tdid because T thought that they would be better rotected In this Way. These caskets were not ‘ail ited and riveted,’ ‘but thy were simply closed In the usual way. It has been stated that the bodles, were placed in metalite cases so that. the friends of the dead could uot get at them, and that, with the exception of a few men who assisted in removing the bodies, no one on the relief ships saw them. ‘This fs false; the bodtes lay on the deck of the ‘The- Us several days, and there was hardiy a sailor on the ship who did not see and touch them, for we Were obilged to keep ice on them all the tine. It 8 sald that I communicated to Secretary Chandler and Gen. Hazen, at Portsm uth, on August 2, facts Yeading to the conclusion tuat these men had eaten up thelr companions, This I deny. I made no Such communication to elther of these gentlemen. Ido not think there was auy canaibaltsin practiced by Greely or his men, I know nothing about this business, nor did I order an investigation.” NOT A WORD OF TRUTH IN THE STORY, Mr. Ames, the surgeon of the Bear, corroborated all that Commander Sciiley sald, and’ added: “I do not think there is a word of truth in the story. Dr. Green and myself laid all the boiles out. ‘They Were, of course, nothing but skin and bone, but with’the exception of one of the men, whose back was broken, they Were all right; that 1s, they did not look as'if they had been mutilated, oF as if the flesh had been eaten off of them.” Lieut. Colville, tirst officer of the Bear, said: “1 wrapped the boilles of the dead up and'then the sallors removed them to the launch. I did not no- Uce any sign of mutilation about them, TALE AMONG THE SAILORS. ‘The saflorsof the Bear and Thetis did not agree tn thelr statements. One or two of the sallorssaid that i¢ they were discharged they would have a story to tell, but they do not care to say anything now. Sergeant Brainard, one of the survivors, 18 Teported to have kept a’ di ry and in it to have stated that one of the party had to be sacrificed to Keep the rest alive. Seaman Gaylor who became quite intimate with Brainard on the voyage home, ‘Said Brainard referred toa dog and not toa man when he wrote the above, Geo, Gavel, captain of the “top” of the Thetis, sald: “I dug ten of the dead bodies up. ‘They were only covered with a thin layer of sand. “I saw nothing about them that suggested cannibalism; ‘there Was gome little flesh on them. They wet Rot frozen hard when we found them, and their flesh and skin Was quite soft. The bodles lay on the deck ten days and we all saw them. ‘The German ‘who is reported to have said: ‘Must I be killed and eaten as Henry was?’ did not make any such re- mark. When he saw us coming to him he said: ‘I knew the Yankees would come and find us” PRIVATE HENRY’S FRIENDS WILL PUSH AN INVESTI- GaTION. KNOWN 70 ONLY 4 FEW SAILORS OF THE RELIEP ‘VESSELS. ‘The New York Times to-day prints the following: “Very few of the crew of the two rellef vessels ‘assisted by only a few sailors, uncovered the bodies and prepared the remains for removal to the ships. The gravel thrown over them was only a few and if he was responsible for any | j Stroll about the erounds and even visit the city always taken lo guard Ubem from the ques- | est or cine charges: Ibis true that I did suggest _to Secretary Ghatidler thit the bodies should ve placed in metallic cas-s. This was done in a careful, painstaking, reverent way, and only to the officers and a few sallors—not more ‘han three or four—was it known fora certalnty that the bodies were mutilated. In handling the remains after they had been pre pared by the officers, the exceeding lightuess of Some of them was remarked upon by the seamen, ‘and a doubt was more than once expressed if more than half of a body was wituin the covering. This ‘Was noticed In removing the bogies from their shal- low graves in the gravel at the Cape, and again when they were placed in tanks on the Bear and Thetis—six in one and seven in te other. It 1s Said that the body of the Esquimau was not muti- lated to any extent, but It was with reluctance that it was left at Disco, and then only by the imperative order of the Inspéctor of Western Greenland. At Godhaven the governor wished the body left, but he was prevailed upon to leave tt with the others, At Disco, however, the demand for the remains, Was imperative. Sdme of the men lad been little more than ~Kin and bones when they died, but the Uttle flesh they had was gone In places, as on the calves of the legs, on the hips, thighs and arms, Some of this, 118 thought, was used as Dalt for shrinps, some to sustain the wasting life of the survivors. ‘There seems, frown the con ition of the bodies, that there was nd concerted action on the art of those remaining to sustain life in thls way. None of the limbs were missing. But rather It Seems that the perishing men went to the bodies When hunger became unbearable and supplied themseives is best they could. ‘The disciosur’ made by the unearthing the bod- fes of the dead was generally discussed by the crews of all the vessels on the homeward trip.
